For a first viewing, start with Battlestar Galactica: The Miniseries, then watch Seasons 1 and 2, Razor, Seasons 3 and 4, and finally The Plan. Save the optional prequels Caprica and Blood & Chrome until afterward.
This guide covers the 2003–2009 reimagined universe. The 1978 Battlestar Galactica and Galactica 1980 belong to a separate continuity and should not be inserted into the modern-series order.

The best Battlestar Galactica viewing order for beginners
- Battlestar Galactica: The Miniseries — Parts 1 and 2
- Season 1
- Season 2, Episodes 1–17
- Battlestar Galactica: Razor
- Season 2, Episodes 18–20
- The Resistance — optional webisodes
- Season 3
- Season 4, Episodes 1–10
- The Face of the Enemy — optional webisodes
- Season 4, Episodes 11–21
- The Plan
- Caprica — optional prequel
- Blood & Chrome — optional prequel
The split-season placement is the most spoiler-conscious option. If you want a simpler binge, watch all of Season 2 before Razor, then continue with Seasons 3 and 4.

The simplest order
Most viewers can use this less complicated sequence without losing the main story:
- The Miniseries
- Season 1
- Season 2
- Razor
- Season 3
- Season 4
- The Plan
- Caprica
- Blood & Chrome
The Resistance, Razor Flashbacks, and The Face of the Enemy add context but are not required to understand the main series.
Where does Razor fit?
Razor is a television movie focused on the battlestar Pegasus and Kendra Shaw. Its framing story fits around the transition from Season 2 to Season 3, while its flashbacks reach further into the past.

For the most careful first viewing, watch it after Season 2, Episode 17, then finish Episodes 18–20. For an easier experience, watch the complete second season and then Razor.
Streaming services do not always present it consistently. Paramount’s episode guide currently lists it as “Razor, Part 1” and “Razor, Part 2,” while other services may show it as a separate film. Follow the title rather than the season number: Paramount’s episode listing.
If you find the seven Razor Flashbacks webisodes separately, watch them immediately before or after Razor. Some extended editions incorporate this material, so do not watch both versions if scenes are duplicated.
Where do the webisodes fit?
The Resistance
Watch The Resistance after Season 2 and before Season 3. These short episodes provide additional context for the resistance storyline, but skipping them will not prevent you from following the television series.

The Face of the Enemy
Watch The Face of the Enemy after the first 10 episodes of Season 4 and before the later episodes connected to it. Because services package webisodes differently—and may not carry them at all—use the story placement rather than a platform’s episode numbering.
When should you watch The Plan?
Watch The Plan after the Season 4 finale on your first viewing. It retells parts of the story from the Cylon perspective, so watching it earlier can reveal information that the main series deliberately withholds.
It is a retrospective companion movie, not a conventional sequel and not “Season 5.” Paramount currently lists it separately as a 2009 film: The Plan on Paramount+.
Should you watch Caprica and Blood & Chrome?
Yes, if you want more of the reimagined universe—but neither is required for the main saga.
- Caprica: A 19-episode prequel set 50 years before Battlestar Galactica. It follows the Graystone and Adama families and explores the origins of technologies and institutions relevant to the later story. Its tone and structure differ substantially from the main series. Watch it after the main saga and The Plan. Paramount’s Caprica listing identifies it as a one-season series.
- Blood & Chrome: A prequel about a young William “Husker” Adama during the First Cylon War. It was released as a web series and also edited into a television-movie presentation; these are not two separate stories. Treat it as an optional historical companion after the main saga, preferably after Caprica.
Release order
Release order is a reasonable alternative, especially for a rewatch:
- The Miniseries (2003)
- Season 1 (2004–2005)
- Season 2 (2005–2006)
- The Resistance webisodes (2006)
- Season 3 (2006–2007)
- Razor Flashbacks webisodes (2007)
- Razor (2007)
- Season 4 (2008–2009), with The Face of the Enemy in its relevant window
- The Plan (2009)
- Caprica (2010)
- Blood & Chrome (2012)
This preserves the historical release sequence, but it places Razor after the beginning of Season 3 rather than at its story position. For a first watch, the recommended order above is generally less disruptive.
Chronological order
The broad in-universe chronology is:
- Caprica
- Blood & Chrome
- The Miniseries
- Seasons 1–4, with Razor around the Season 2/3 transition
- The Plan as a retrospective companion
This is a completionist or rewatch order, not the best introduction. Caprica and Blood & Chrome were produced after the main series and are more meaningful when you already understand the larger saga. Paramount describes Caprica as taking place 50 years earlier while recommending it after the main show.

What about the 1978 series?
The original Battlestar Galactica (1978), its theatrical compilation film, and Galactica 1980 are separate productions from the 2003–2009 reimagining. They are not Season 0, required backstory, or missing chapters in the modern story.

Keep it as a separate viewing project rather than inserting it between the modern miniseries and Season 1.
Where to stream Battlestar Galactica in the United States
Availability checked August 18, 2026. Streaming catalogs and prices can change, and availability differs by country.
In the United States, Paramount’s official guide says Paramount+ carries The Miniseries, all four seasons of the reimagined series, The Plan, and Caprica. Its Essential plan was displayed at $8.99 per month and Premium at $13.99 per month when checked; verify the current price before subscribing.
Paramount also says the Miniseries, the four main seasons, and The Plan are available through Pluto TV, its free ad-supported service. That does not establish that Pluto TV carries Caprica, Razor, or every webisode.

- The Miniseries appears as Season 1: Choose the two-part production by title and runtime before starting ordinary Season 1.
- Season 1, Episode 1 is “33”: That is correct for the weekly series; the Miniseries comes first.
- Razor appears in Season 3 or Season 4: This is usually packaging, not a recommendation to move it there.
- The Plan appears beside the seasons: Treat it as a separate movie and save it for after the finale.
- Duplicate cuts appear: Choose one complete version of a movie rather than combining an extended edition with a split listing.
If you only want the essential story
Watch The Miniseries, Seasons 1–4, Razor, and The Plan. You can skip Caprica, Blood & Chrome, and the webisodes without losing the central narrative. The companion productions are worthwhile only if you want additional perspectives, history, or character context.
