You can watch many ordinary, 3D, 180°, and 360° videos on these headsets, but there is no universal “play anything” button. Use a headset browser for online video, a local media player for downloaded files, or a PC player/browser for Oculus Rift and HTC Vive. The catch in 2026 is that these are legacy platforms: a headset may still display video even when its app store, browser, streaming service, or account features no longer work.
Quick choice: try local files first on Oculus Go, Gear VR, or Daydream; use the connected Windows PC for Rift or Vive; and select the right projection mode for 3D, 180°, or 360° content. No headset guarantees playback of every codec, website, or DRM-protected service.
Choose a playback method

Older compatibility guides list Oculus Browser for Go and Gear VR, Chrome for Daydream, and desktop browsers for Rift and Vive. Treat those as historical references, not proof that a particular website still works today (WebVR compatibility overview; Shapespark browser/device reference).

First identify what kind of video you have
“VR video” can mean an ordinary movie shown in a headset, or footage intended to wrap around you. These viewing modes are different:

A standard movie can look stretched or split if you force it into 180° or 360° mode. Conversely, immersive footage can look like a flat or distorted rectangle if the player does not know its projection. Downloaded files do not always carry reliable projection information, so you may need to set it yourself.
Watching a video in VR also has three meanings: the image can surround you (immersive playback), appear on a large virtual cinema screen (theater playback), or simply be enlarged in a browser window (fullscreen). A normal YouTube clip on a virtual screen is still ordinary 2D video.
Oculus Go: use the browser or an installed player
For online video, put on the headset, open its browser from the app library, navigate to the site, start the video, and use the page’s fullscreen control if available. If the clip is 180° or 360°, look for a VR/headset button or a projection setting in the player. Fullscreen by itself does not make a video immersive.
For a downloaded file, use a media player that is already installed and can access local storage. Copying a file over USB may be possible if the headset and computer expose storage access, but exact prompts and file access depend on the software already on the Go. Prefer local playback when a website will not load.

Oculus Go is a legacy headset, not a dependable way to access current app-store streaming services. Existing software may still work, but store availability and server-dependent features are uncertain. Bigscreen has said Oculus no longer supported Go and that it could not provide future updates for its Go version (Bigscreen announcement). Do not assume a new browser or player can still be installed.
Oculus Rift: play through the connected PC
Rift is not a standalone video headset. Connect it to a compatible Windows PC, start the Oculus/Meta PC runtime that works with your system, and confirm the headset tracks correctly. Then launch a VR media player or a desktop browser from the PC environment, open the file or website, and use its fullscreen, theater, or VR mode.
- Connect and enable the Rift and start its PC VR runtime.
- Open a VR media application or desktop browser.
- Play the file or navigate to the video page.
- Choose immersive mode only if the video and player support the correct projection.
- If the website’s VR mode fails, use a virtual screen/theater mode instead.
Exact menus vary with runtime, Windows, browser, and app versions. Current browser support for WebXR or older WebVR features is not guaranteed. A normal desktop video displayed on a virtual screen is the most useful fallback; Rift has no independent headset browser.
HTC Vive: use SteamVR or model-specific Vive software
For a PC-tethered Vive, start the compatible PC and SteamVR, then open a SteamVR-compatible video player or desktop browser. Play the file or website and choose fullscreen or theater mode. For immersive footage, select 180° or 360° and the matching mono, SBS, or over-under layout.

Vive software differs by model. HTC documents online 360° YouTube playback through VIVE Browser for a supported Vive-family device (HTC instructions for the supported device). Separately, HTC’s VIVE Flow guidance describes copying files to Downloads and playing them in VIVEPORT Video; it lists MP4, MKV, and WebM containers for Flow specifically (HTC VIVE Flow local-video instructions). Neither example establishes app availability or format support for every Vive generation.
Gear VR: preserve what still works
Gear VR needs a compatible Samsung phone; the headset alone cannot play video. If a browser or video player is already installed, try online playback in the browser or open a local phone file in the player. Website compatibility depends on the old browser, phone model, and the site’s current login, codec, and security requirements.
Gear VR is a legacy platform. Samsung said new Gear VR apps would no longer be released after September 15, 2020, and Oculus Browser updates would no longer be supported (Samsung’s 2020 notice). Samsung later reported that Meta ended support for new app installation and updates after March 18, 2024, with Oculus-account login and store access also affected (Samsung’s 2024 notice).
Important: do not casually uninstall working apps or factory-reset a Gear VR phone. Samsung warns that deleting apps or resetting may permanently remove access to them. Check the exact Samsung phone model before assuming it is compatible, and treat existing apps as potentially irreplaceable.

Daydream: only if your phone and existing software still cooperate
Daydream View requires a compatible phone and controller setup. Google says Daydream software is no longer supported, receives no software or security updates, and may not work correctly on some phones running Android 11 or later; Daydream View is no longer sold (Google Daydream support notice). Google’s setup guidance also described wired headphones for that setup because Bluetooth headphone support was not available there (Google setup guidance).
If you already own one, try a compatible browser or app that is already installed, or use a standalone Android app if it remains available and works on your phone. Preserve working apps and avoid a factory reset unless you know you can restore them. Daydream is not a sensible platform to buy for current streaming. Google’s current YouTube VR device list names newer headsets and does not list Go, Rift, Gear VR, or Daydream (YouTube VR supported-device information).

Local playback avoids many browser, login, DRM, and service-shutdown problems. On a standalone headset or phone, use a data-capable USB cable to connect it to a computer, approve file access or data mode if prompted, and copy the video to a folder such as Movies or Downloads. Open the installed file browser or player, choose the video, and set its projection and stereo layout. Exact storage access depends on the model and its existing software.

- If the original fails, test a known-good ordinary 2D MP4 with H.264 video and AAC audio.
- Connect the headset or phone using a data-capable USB cable and approve file access if prompted.
- Copy the file to a recognizable folder such as
MoviesorDownloads. - Open the installed player or file browser and select the file.
- Choose Flat, 180°, 360°, SBS, or Over-Under as appropriate, then recenter the view.
For Rift and Vive, the file can stay on the connected PC; open it in a VR player or show the desktop player on a virtual screen. Some players can also browse network shares. For network playback, put the headset and computer/NAS on the same network, enable sharing or a compatible media server, then browse to the file in the player. App support varies by legacy platform, so do not assume one network app works on all five headsets. If streaming stutters, copy the file locally, reduce its bitrate, improve Wi-Fi, or use a wired PC connection where applicable.

Containers, codecs, and why an MP4 can still fail
A container (such as MP4, MKV, or WebM) packages the video and audio streams. The video codec (such as H.264/AVC, H.265/HEVC, VP8, VP9, or AV1) and the audio codec (such as AAC or Opus) determine how those streams are encoded and whether the device can decode them. Resolution and bitrate matter too: old mobile hardware may struggle with a demanding file even if its container is recognized.
For a compatibility test, start with an ordinary 2D MP4 containing H.264 video and AAC audio at a moderate resolution and bitrate. That is a sensible first test, not a guarantee for every player. Do not infer compatibility from a filename ending in .mp4. Try HEVC only where the exact player and hardware document support for it.
- Test the known-good H.264/AAC file locally.
- If it plays, the player and basic storage path work; investigate the original file.
- Inspect the original’s video codec, audio codec, resolution, and bitrate with a media-information utility.
- If the streams are compatible but the container is the problem, remuxing may be enough.
- If a codec, audio format, bitrate, or resolution is unsupported, transcode to a compatible format and test the result locally.
Remuxing changes how compatible streams are packaged; it does not convert an unsupported codec. Avoid DRM circumvention: subscription streams and some purchased videos are intentionally restricted to supported apps or devices.
Troubleshoot by symptom

If a known-good local file works but a website fails, suspect browser compatibility, DRM, account login, or site changes rather than the headset display. If local video also fails, check player installation, storage permission, codec support, and—on PC headsets—the VR runtime and tracking.
When the legacy platform is the problem
Online playback depends on more than the headset: the browser must support the site’s current code and security requirements, the device must decode the stream, and the service may impose DRM or require an app that is no longer available. A normal browser fullscreen control may only enlarge a flat page; it does not guarantee VR mode.
For current YouTube VR support, Google’s device list does not include Oculus Go, Rift, Gear VR, or Daydream. A YouTube page may still work in a browser on some configurations, but that is different from a current official YouTube VR app. On Rift and Vive, the connected PC provides more browser and playback flexibility, but the result still depends on Windows, drivers, runtime, browser, and site support.
If you need dependable current streaming apps, modern browsers, security updates, or active app installation, replacing a legacy headset may be more practical than trying to restore a discontinued platform. That is a separate buying decision; verify current device and service compatibility before choosing hardware. For the headsets covered here, local playback or a PC virtual screen is often the more durable fallback.
