Wait for the page state that supplies the text, then await document.fonts.ready in the browser before calling page.screenshot(). If a particular family, weight, style, or character subset is essential, explicitly request it with document.fonts.load() first. This sequence prevents captures made during a font swap without pretending that every declared font has loaded.
The reliable sequence
Font readiness is a page-state check, not a fixed sleep. A dependable Playwright capture follows this order:
- Navigate to the URL.
- Wait for the application state that determines what will be visible: a route, hydrated component, API-driven section, or other selector.
- Run
await page.evaluate(() => document.fonts.ready). - Capture the page or element.
Document.fonts.ready resolves after fonts currently used by the document and associated layout operations are ready. It does not require every @font-face declared in stylesheets to load; unused faces can remain unloaded. The browser APIs are documented by MDN’s FontFaceSet.ready reference and Document.fonts reference.
Runnable Playwright example
Install Playwright, then place the wait after the final content state. Replace the example selector with one that is meaningful for your application.

import { chromium } from 'playwright';
const browser = await chromium.launch();
const page = await browser.newPage({ viewport: { width: 1440, height: 900 } });
await page.goto('https://example.com', { waitUntil: 'domcontentloaded' });
// Wait for the content whose typography will appear in the image.
await page.locator('[data-page-ready="true"]').waitFor();
// Wait in the page context for fonts used by this rendered state.
await page.evaluate(() => document.fonts.ready);
await page.screenshot({ path: 'page.png', fullPage: true });
await browser.close();
If your page has no application-specific marker, use the last reliable state you do have, such as a route-specific heading or a component that appears only after hydration. Do not place the font wait immediately after navigation when client-side rendering can add text later: the set of fonts used by the document can change when that text arrives.
The Playwright Page API supplies navigation, page evaluation, and screenshot methods. The font readiness signal itself comes from the browser’s Document.fonts API.
When to use document.fonts.load()
Use document.fonts.load(font, text) when the screenshot depends on a known face or a specific text subset. The first argument is a CSS font specification, and the second is representative text whose glyphs must be available.
Recommended Free Tools
await page.goto('https://example.com', { waitUntil: 'domcontentloaded' });
await page.locator('main').waitFor();
await page.evaluate(async () => {
await document.fonts.load('16px "ExampleFont"', 'Headline 0123');
});
await page.screenshot({ path: 'font-specific.png' });
MDN documents that FontFaceSet.load() forces matching fonts to load and fulfills with the loaded FontFace objects. If the requested font fails, the promise rejects, making the problem visible instead of silently capturing a fallback. Read the API details at MDN’s FontFaceSet.load reference.

ready versus load
| Method | Scope | Use it when | Important limitation |
|---|---|---|---|
document.fonts.ready |
Fonts currently used by the rendered document, plus related layout completion | The final page content is present and you want its typography settled | Unused declared faces, and optional faces not selected in time, may remain unloaded |
document.fonts.load(font, text) |
Faces matching the CSS specification and text supplied | A particular family, weight, style, or character subset must be present | The promise can reject; choose a representative CSS specification and text |
These methods complement each other. A common pattern is to wait for the application’s final content, call document.fonts.ready, and then call document.fonts.load() for any additional face that must be guaranteed.
Make the content state deterministic first
Client-side routes and hydration
For a single-page application, wait for the route’s visible marker or a hydrated component before checking fonts. Navigation completion alone does not prove that data-dependent text has been inserted.
await page.goto('https://example.com/dashboard');
await page.waitForURL('**/dashboard');
await page.getByRole('heading', { name: 'Dashboard' }).waitFor();
await page.evaluate(() => document.fonts.ready);
await page.screenshot({ path: 'dashboard.png' });
Text that appears after an API response
Wait for the element whose content is populated by that response, not merely for the network request to start. Then perform the font wait. This ensures the browser evaluates readiness against the same text that will be captured.
Choosing a specific subset
For multilingual pages, include representative characters from every script that matters in the screenshot when calling load(). A Latin-only sample does not express the need for another character subset.

Stabilize screenshots beyond fonts
Disable animation when motion affects pixels
Font readiness and animation control solve different problems. Playwright’s screenshot option animations: 'disabled' stops CSS animations, transitions, and Web Animations for that screenshot operation.
await page.evaluate(() => document.fonts.ready);
await page.screenshot({
path: 'stable.png',
fullPage: true,
animations: 'disabled'
});
Use both controls when both typography and motion can change the image. The option is described in the Playwright Page API.
Use screenshot assertions for visual comparison
expect(page).toHaveScreenshot() waits until two consecutive screenshots match before comparing the final image. That stability check is useful for visual tests, but it is not a replacement for an explicit font wait when the expected face matters.

Common failures and fixes
The screenshot still shows a fallback font
- Cause: The page added or replaced text after the readiness check.
- Fix: Move the check after the final route, hydration, or data-driven selector, then await
document.fonts.readyagain.
A required face never appears
- Cause: The face is declared but not used by the captured text, so
readyhas no reason to load it. - Fix: Call
document.fonts.load()with the exact CSS font specification and representative text, and fail the test if that promise rejects.
The explicit load resolves, but the visual result is wrong
- Cause: The CSS specification does not match the needed family, weight, style, or stretch, or the sample text does not cover the required subset.
- Fix: Match the declaration used by the element (for example, the correct weight) and include characters that will actually be captured.
Visual assertions remain flaky
- Cause: Animation or another dynamic page state is changing pixels independently of fonts.
- Fix: Wait for the application state, await font readiness, disable animations for the capture, and then let
toHaveScreenshot()perform its consecutive-image stability check.
Navigation waits too long or times out
- Cause: The selector chosen as the application-ready signal never appears, or the page failed before rendering it.
- Fix: Verify the selector in a headed run, choose a marker that is guaranteed for the target route, and diagnose page-load errors separately from font timing. Do not replace a missing state signal with an arbitrary sleep.
Performance and reliability guidance
- Prefer a state-based wait over a fixed delay. It finishes as soon as the intended content and its used fonts are ready.
- Keep the font wait in the page context with
page.evaluate(); that is wheredocument.fontsexists. - Use
load()selectively. Requesting only faces and text needed by the screenshot avoids turning unrelated, unused declarations into a prerequisite. - Keep the order consistent in CI: final content state, font readiness, animation policy, then screenshot or assertion.
- Record a rejected explicit font load as a test failure. A fallback image can otherwise look valid while representing the wrong typography.
Actual consistency can still depend on application rendering and other dynamic content. The official references describe the browser and Playwright mechanisms, not a guarantee that every page will become visually identical under every environment.

FAQ
Does FontFaceSet.load() return the font itself?
It fulfills with the loaded FontFace objects that match the requested CSS specification and text. You normally do not need to inspect those objects for a screenshot; awaiting the promise is the readiness gate.
Should a screenshot assertion replace document.fonts.ready?
No. The assertion’s consecutive-capture check addresses pixel stability, while the font promise addresses font loading and related layout. When typography is part of the expected image, use both.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does FontFaceSet.load() return the font itself?
It fulfills with the loaded FontFace objects matching the requested CSS specification and text; for screenshots, simply awaiting the promise is usually sufficient.
Should a screenshot assertion replace document.fonts.ready?
No. The assertion checks consecutive-image stability, while document.fonts.ready handles font loading and layout readiness. Use both when typography matters.
