Use load.jsdelay when a predictable, fixed delay is enough; use window.print() when your page can signal readiness itself. wkhtmltopdf does not document a general “wait until this selector, promise, or JavaScript condition is true” option. Enable JavaScript, verify the syntax supported by your installed binary with wkhtmltopdf -H, and choose a readiness strategy that matches your page.
The documented ways to delay printing
wkhtmltopdf’s settings reference places the delay in the page/object loading options. The setting is load.jsdelay, measured in milliseconds. Its documented behavior is: “We will wait this amount of time or until, javascript calls window.print().” The delay starts after the page has finished loading. The documentation uses 1200 milliseconds as an example; that is an example value, not a universal recommendation.
JavaScript is controlled separately by web.enableJavascript. A delay cannot help if scripts are disabled, fail to execute, or never receive the data they need.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:

For a page that normally finishes its asynchronous work within a known envelope, pass the delay in milliseconds. The exact command-line spelling can vary by build, so inspect the help generated by your executable:

wkhtmltopdf -H
The project says this help output is the source for its generated documentation. Confirm that your binary accepts the setting and note whether it presents the option with the expected global or object-level syntax.
A typical invocation is:
wkhtmltopdf --enable-javascript --javascript-delay 1200 https://example.com report.pdf
Some distributions expose the underlying setting as load.jsdelay rather than the long CLI alias shown above. Use the spelling printed by your installed binary instead of copying an option blindly.
End the wait from page JavaScript
If your application knows exactly when rendering is complete, call window.print() from the page. The documented wait can finish when that call occurs:
<script>
fetch('/api/report')
.then(response => response.json())
.then(data => {
renderReport(data);
window.print();
})
.catch(error => {
document.body.dataset.renderError = error.message;
window.print();
});
</script>
Use this only when the page controls the script and can define “ready” reliably. A call to window.print() is a page-side signal; it is not a documented API for waiting on an arbitrary selector, promise, network request, or framework lifecycle from the wkhtmltopdf command line.
Can wkhtmltopdf wait for a DOM condition?
Not through the documented loading setting. The cited settings reference documents a fixed millisecond delay and the early completion signal from window.print(). It does not document a selector wait such as “print when #chart exists,” nor a command-line expression that evaluates an arbitrary JavaScript condition.

If you need condition-aware readiness, put the condition in page code and call window.print() only after it succeeds. For example:
<script>
const timeout = setTimeout(() => {
document.body.dataset.pdfState = 'timeout';
window.print();
}, 15000);
function waitForElement(selector) {
return new Promise(resolve => {
const existing = document.querySelector(selector);
if (existing) return resolve(existing);
const observer = new MutationObserver(() => {
const element = document.querySelector(selector);
if (element) {
observer.disconnect();
resolve(element);
}
});
observer.observe(document.documentElement, {childList: true, subtree: true});
});
}
waitForElement('#report-ready').then(() => {
clearTimeout(timeout);
window.print();
});
</script>
The timeout branch matters: if the element never appears, the converter must not wait indefinitely. Include a visible error state or a status marker so a generated PDF cannot be mistaken for a complete report.

- Enable scripts. Check
web.enableJavascriptinwkhtmltopdf -Hand ensure your invocation does not disable JavaScript. - Define readiness in the page. Set a flag, insert a marker element, or call
window.print()after all required data, images, fonts, and charts are ready. - Add a bounded fallback. Use a maximum delay or timeout and render an explicit failure state if the condition is not met.
- Use a fixed delay when the page cannot signal. Start with a value based on observed worst-case loading time, then confirm it under the slowest supported environment.
- Inspect the produced PDF. Check that asynchronous sections, images, and calculated totals are present; a successful process exit does not prove application readiness.
Examples for common asynchronous pages
Charts that render after data arrives
Call window.print() from the chart library’s completion callback, not immediately after starting the request. If the library has no callback, poll a documented completion property or observe the chart container, with a hard timeout.
Images loaded lazily
Wait for each required image’s load event and verify that its natural dimensions are non-zero. Broken images should produce an error state rather than silently printing an incomplete page.
Web fonts
Fonts can change line wrapping after initial load. If your page can access the Font Loading API, wait for the required faces before calling window.print(); otherwise use a conservative delay and test pagination.

Single-page applications
Do not equate the first route response with application readiness. Set a page-owned “ready” signal after routing, API calls, and visual rendering complete. Keep the signal deterministic so retries produce the same PDF.
Why a delay sometimes appears not to work
JavaScript is disabled or errors early
Verify the JavaScript setting and inspect the page in a normal browser. A syntax error, unsupported API, cross-origin failure, or rejected request can prevent the readiness code from running. Add an on-page error marker and a timeout fallback.
The option is rejected
Run wkhtmltopdf -H on the exact executable used in production. Package maintainers may ship different builds or wrappers, and the accepted aliases are build-specific.
The page needs more than the chosen delay
A fixed delay is a maximum wait, not a readiness test. Increase it only after measuring the slow path; an unbounded increase makes jobs slower without fixing failures caused by blocked requests or script errors. Prefer a page-side completion signal when possible.
External resources are unavailable
Check DNS, TLS, authentication, firewall rules, and the URL’s accessibility from the conversion host. If data is private, provide the required request context through your application or generate a self-contained page; do not assume the converter shares your browser session.

The process hangs
Look for a readiness promise that never resolves, a missing fallback, or a script that waits on an event that cannot occur in the WebKit environment used by wkhtmltopdf. Add a finite timeout and log the state that caused printing.
Security and version considerations
The project’s downloads page lists 0.12.6 as its stable series and dates that release June 11, 2020. That is release metadata, not evidence that it is a current package in your operating system. Check the version and patch status supplied by your platform, and validate behavior with the installed executable.
The same project warns: “Do not use wkhtmltopdf with any untrusted HTML – be sure to sanitize any user-supplied HTML/JS, otherwise it can lead to complete takeover of the server it is running on!” Treat HTML, scripts, URLs, cookies, and headers as untrusted inputs unless you have isolated and sanitized them. Run conversion in a restricted account or container, limit network access where practical, and avoid exposing secrets to page JavaScript.
The project status page describes security concerns related to wkhtmltopdf’s WebKit1 in-process API. For dynamic-JavaScript sites it recommends considering Puppeteer; for report generation from controlled HTML it mentions WeasyPrint or commercial Prince. These are project recommendations, not published benchmark results. Compare candidates on JavaScript support, readiness controls, rendering fidelity, isolation, deployment requirements, and licensing cost for your workload.

Performance and operational guidance
- Prefer signaling over sleeping. A page that prints as soon as it is ready avoids paying the full worst-case delay on fast runs.
- Keep the fallback finite. A timeout turns a dead dependency into a diagnosable failed report instead of a stuck worker.
- Make output observable. Include a build identifier, readiness state, and error reason in logs or an internal footer, while keeping end-user PDFs clean.
- Test the slow path. Exercise cold caches, slow APIs, missing data, expired credentials, and blocked third-party resources.
- Pin and document the binary. Record the executable version, operating-system package, and the output of
wkhtmltopdf -Hso upgrades do not silently change accepted options.
Or skip the browser setup
If you only need a dependable screenshot or PDF endpoint, ScreenshotNeo accepts a URL with one request. It can wait for a selector, a delay, or network idle, and it supports JavaScript, custom headers, cookies, user agents, viewport and device settings, full-page captures, element captures, and PDF output. Before capture it accepts cookie/consent banners and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets; each step can be disabled.
Only clean shots are billed. Bot checks or CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits cost nothing, and the response identifies the result with X-Page-Verdict and X-Billed headers. Its MCP server provides take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf for Claude, Cursor, and other MCP clients.

Frequently Asked Questions
Does --javascript-delay wait before the page loads?
No. It is a post-load wait. Resources and scripts must first reach the page-load stage; use page-side readiness logic when work continues afterward.
Can I use window.print() without a delay?
Yes, when your page invokes it after rendering is complete. Keep a bounded fallback so a failed request cannot leave the conversion job waiting forever.
Is wkhtmltopdf 0.12.6 a current release?
The project downloads page lists 0.12.6, released June 11, 2020. Treat that as the page’s release metadata and verify package status for your platform.
