To view a YouTube thumbnail in your browser, take the video ID from its link and open https://img.youtube.com/vi/VIDEO_ID/maxresdefault.jpg, replacing VIDEO_ID with the actual ID. If that image is unavailable, try hqdefault.jpg, mqdefault.jpg, or default.jpg. The largest version is not available for every video. You can also paste a video link into an online preview utility, or use YouTube’s Data API if you need thumbnail URLs and dimensions in an application.
View a thumbnail directly in your browser
The quickest method is to open a thumbnail image URL. The pattern https://img.youtube.com/vi/VIDEO_ID/RESOLUTION.jpg is described by third-party thumbnail tools, including Zerethon and Toollyz; it is not a URL-construction recipe established by the YouTube API reference. Replace the two capitalized parts with the video’s ID and a size name, then open the completed address in a new browser tab.
- Copy the video’s YouTube link.
- Find the video ID in the link. For a standard watch link, it appears after
v=; for a short link, it followsyoutu.be/. The video ID is different from the video’s title or channel name. - Build the image address, for example
https://img.youtube.com/vi/VIDEO_ID/maxresdefault.jpg. - If the image does not load or is not the size you want, replace
maxresdefaultwith another available size name and try again.
For illustration, if the ID were VIDEO_ID, the image address would have the same ID segment between /vi/ and the size filename. Do not include the full watch URL in that segment: the pattern expects the video ID alone.
Recognize common YouTube links
A watch link commonly includes an ID after v=. A short link places it after the domain’s slash. Links to Shorts and embedded players use different surrounding URL paths, but the relevant value is still the video ID. The third-party preview tools cited above say they accept common watch, short-link, Shorts, and embed formats, as well as a bare ID. If you are unsure which part is the ID, pasting the full link into a preview utility avoids manually interpreting the URL.

Choose an image size that exists
YouTube’s documented thumbnail resource has size-keyed objects. The API documentation gives typical dimensions for video thumbnails as follows; actual availability and dimensions can vary by resource and source content resolution. YouTube Data API: Thumbnails (Google for Developers, last updated June 1, 2026) says the standard and maxres objects are available only for some video resources.
| Size name | Typical dimensions | Availability note |
|---|---|---|
default |
120 × 90 | Documented default video thumbnail size. |
medium |
320 × 180 | Documented medium video thumbnail size. |
high |
480 × 360 | Documented high video thumbnail size. |
standard |
640 × 480 | Available for some video resources, not all. |
maxres |
1280 × 720 | Available for some video resources, not all. |
These are the typical sizes documented by YouTube, not a promise that every video has each one. In particular, a request for maxres does not guarantee a 1280 × 720 file. If the largest option fails, step down through the other size names. A working smaller image is preferable to repeatedly requesting a variant the video does not provide.
Use an online preview utility when you want to paste a link
A preview utility is useful when you do not want to identify the ID or test image sizes yourself. Paste the video link (or, where accepted, the bare ID), and the tool can show thumbnail variants that load. The cited third-party tools describe support for common YouTube URL formats and fallback choices for missing large images: Zerethon’s YouTube Thumbnail Downloader and Toollyz Thumbnail Downloader.

For a one-off check, compare the previewed sizes and open the one you want. If a tool displays a maximum-size option, treat that as an option to check, not proof that every video has a maximum-resolution image. Third-party tool features, operation, and privacy statements are vendor claims and may change; use the service’s own current information when deciding whether to submit a link.

|---|---|---|
| Direct image URL | Quickly opening one image in a browser. | You need the ID and must try a size that exists. The URL pattern is described by third-party tools. |

Get thumbnail URLs from YouTube’s Data API
If you are building an application or processing video information, the official API exposes thumbnails as a size-keyed resource. A size object can include the image URL and width and height. Rather than constructing an image URL yourself, request the video’s snippet data and use the URL returned for the size you need. The official reference documents the thumbnail resource and its size variants at YouTube Data API: Thumbnails.
In your application, select the video’s snippet thumbnail object, check which size keys are present, and read the URL and dimensions from the chosen object. Do not assume every size key is returned: YouTube documents standard and maxres as available only for some resources. If your application needs a usable image rather than a specific resolution, choose the largest available returned variant and retain a fallback to a smaller one.
Rank #3
The API route is most helpful when the image URL is data your program needs to store, display, or process along with video metadata. For manually viewing one image, the direct browser pattern or a paste-a-link utility takes less setup. Keep in mind that the API’s documented resource fields and the third-party direct-URL pattern are different things: the API reference establishes returned thumbnail URLs and dimensions, while the direct pattern above is described by tool providers.
When a thumbnail will not display
- The image URL is broken. Check that you copied only the video ID into the URL, with no spaces, extra query parameters, or surrounding link text.
- The requested size is missing. Try
hqdefault, mqdefault, ordefaultinstead ofmaxresdefault. YouTube’s API documentation specifically limitsstandardandmaxresavailability to some resources. - You have a page URL but cannot find the ID. Use a preview utility that accepts the full link, or inspect the part after
v=in a watch link or after the slash in a short link. - The preview shows a different size than expected. Check the displayed dimensions where available; size names refer to typical dimensions, and actual thumbnails can vary with the resource and source content resolution.
- You need a dependable URL for software. Prefer the size-keyed URL returned by the YouTube Data API and check which objects are present rather than assuming a particular variant exists.
Viewing is not the same as reusing a thumbnail
Opening or inspecting a thumbnail does not by itself establish permission to republish it, hotlink it, or use it commercially. The official thumbnail API reference describes the image resource and dimensions; it does not establish reuse rights. The cited third-party downloader also discusses ownership and permission, but that is not authoritative legal guidance. If you plan to reuse an image, check applicable platform terms and seek permission where appropriate; the rules can depend on context and jurisdiction.

ScreenshotNeo is a website screenshot API, not a YouTube thumbnail lookup service: use the methods above when you need the thumbnail image itself. If instead you need a screenshot of a rendered web page that contains a thumbnail, ScreenshotNeo can return a page capture from one GET request. For example, this requests a screenshot of a YouTube page; it does not extract the thumbnail file:

curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VIDEO_ID -o shot.webp
See the ScreenshotNeo API documentation for request options. Before capture, it accepts cookie or consent banners like a visitor and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets; each step can be turned off. Bot checks or CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits are not billed, and response headers report the page verdict and billing status. Its MCP server provides take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf tools for Claude, Cursor, and other MCP clients. The Free plan includes 1,000 screenshots per month with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 screenshots, and every feature is available on every plan.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can I view a thumbnail without opening the YouTube video?
Yes. Open the thumbnail image URL in a browser, or use a preview utility that accepts the video link. Neither method requires playing the video.
Best Value
Why does a thumbnail look stretched or have different dimensions?
The API documentation describes typical dimensions and notes that dimensions can vary with the resource and source content resolution. Check the actual image’s dimensions rather than assuming every variant has identical proportions.
Does ScreenshotNeo retrieve the original YouTube thumbnail?
No. It captures a rendered web page. To retrieve a thumbnail image or its structured URL and dimensions, use the direct image method, a preview utility, or YouTube’s Data API.
