To view a YouTube thumbnail by itself, copy the video ID and put it into a thumbnail image URL. Start with https://i.ytimg.com/vi/VIDEO_ID/maxresdefault.jpg; if that image is unavailable, try sddefault.jpg, hqdefault.jpg, mqdefault.jpg, or default.jpg. For a quick preview without constructing a URL, open the video on YouTube—the thumbnail is the image shown before playback.
Choose the right way to view it

YouTube describes custom thumbnails as a way to let an audience “view a quick snapshot” of a video. The watch page is simplest; a direct URL gives you more control over which image variant to try.
Open a thumbnail directly in your browser
- Copy the video link. It can be a regular YouTube watch link, a
youtu.beshort link, or a Shorts link. - Find the video ID. In a normal
youtube.com/watch?v=…link, use the value afterv=. In ayoutu.be/…or/shorts/…link, use the final path segment. For example, inhttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VIDEO_ID&list=PLAYLIST_ID, the video ID isVIDEO_ID; do not include the playlist parameter. - Build the image URL. Replace
VIDEO_IDinhttps://i.ytimg.com/vi/VIDEO_ID/maxresdefault.jpgwith the ID you extracted. - Open the completed address. If the largest named variant does not load or is not the one you want, replace
maxresdefaultwithsddefault,hqdefault,mqdefault, ordefault. - Save only if needed. Use the browser’s usual save-image command. This saves the thumbnail still, not the video or the creator’s original design file.
The name in the URL is a request for a particular variant, not a guarantee that the video has that image. A high-resolution variant may be absent. Try the fallback names rather than assuming that an unavailable image means the video itself is unavailable.
Example with a Shorts link
For a link shaped like https://www.youtube.com/shorts/VIDEO_ID, take the final path segment, then use it in the same https://i.ytimg.com/vi/VIDEO_ID/RESOLUTION.jpg pattern. The image URL pattern is the same; the Shorts link format only changes where you find the ID.

Get the thumbnail URL in an application
For software that needs metadata, use the official YouTube Data API’s thumbnail object rather than assuming every video exposes every image size. The object can include a URL and optional width and height. The documented variant names are default, medium, high, standard, and maxres. Which variants and dimensions are returned can differ with the resource and uploaded source resolution, so read the returned URL and dimensions instead of deriving them from the name.
This is distinct from the direct image URL pattern: the direct pattern uses names such as hqdefault.jpg, while the API describes thumbnail objects with names such as high. If your application needs a thumbnail, use the URL the API actually returns for that video. Check whether the object includes the variant you need before relying on it in a layout or export.

Choosing between the direct URL and API
- Use the direct URL for an occasional manual lookup or a quick test of available image variants.
- Use API-returned URLs when building an application that needs thumbnail URLs or dimensions across video resources.
- Plan for missing variants in either workflow. Do not hard-code an assumption that every video has the largest image or the same set of dimensions.
Thumbnail size guidance is not a promise about a public image URL
YouTube’s current creator guidance recommends a 16:9 aspect ratio for standard video thumbnails and 9:16 for Shorts. It recommends uploads of 3840 × 2160 pixels for standard videos and 2160 × 3840 pixels for Shorts, subject to the current file-size limits and account or device conditions. These are upload recommendations. They do not guarantee that a public thumbnail URL will expose an image at those dimensions, or that every resolution name will be available.
Shorts also have a separate YouTube Studio thumbnail workflow. If you are trying to choose or change a thumbnail as the creator, use that workflow rather than treating the public image URL as an editing tool. Opening or saving a thumbnail only gives you the still image that is available to view.

The image URL does not load
Check that you copied only the video ID, not the entire watch URL or extra query parameters. Confirm that the ID came from the correct part of the link: the v value for a watch link, or the final path segment for a short or Shorts link. Then try the fallback resolution names. The largest variant is not guaranteed to exist.

The image loads, but it is not the size you expected
Try another available resolution name, or use the API’s returned URL and optional width and height if your application needs to know the actual dimensions. Creator upload recommendations do not establish the dimensions of each publicly available variant.
You see a page instead of a standalone image
Make sure the address uses the image host and path pattern i.ytimg.com/vi/VIDEO_ID/RESOLUTION.jpg, rather than the video’s watch-page address. Also check that the URL contains a thumbnail variant name in place of RESOLUTION.

You want to publish the image elsewhere
Viewing or saving a thumbnail is not the same as having permission to republish it. Check the creator’s rights or obtain permission before reusing the image in another project. Keeping a downloaded copy on your own hosting does not itself grant reuse rights.

Does saving the thumbnail download the video?
No. The direct image URL is for a still image; it does not download the video or the original editable thumbnail file.
Can a thumbnail URL provide the creator’s original image file?
No such guarantee is established by the public image URL pattern. It opens an available thumbnail variant, not necessarily the uploaded source at its original dimensions.
