To view a website by URL, open a browser, select its address bar, enter or paste the full web address, then press Enter or Return (or tap Go on a mobile device). If you have a link to a particular page, enter that page’s full URL—not just the site’s home-page domain.
Open a website by entering its URL
A URL is the address a browser uses to find a web resource. The address bar is usually at the top of a desktop browser window; on a phone or tablet, it is the address or search field near the top of the screen. Modern browsers often use the same field for both web addresses and searches, so entering ordinary words may show search results rather than open a page.
- Open a browser, such as Chrome, Firefox, Edge, or Safari.
- Select the address bar. On a phone or tablet, tap the address or search field.
- Type or paste the URL. For example, a site address may look like
https://example.com/. - Press Enter or Return on a keyboard, or tap Go on a mobile keyboard. If the browser offers a navigation suggestion for the address, select it.
- Wait for the browser to request the page and display it. The result depends on the request succeeding and the site being available.
If someone sent you a link to a specific page, use the entire address they provided. Entering only the domain may take you to the site’s home page instead of the article, product, or other page you intended to view.

Browsers including Chrome let you search the web from the address bar as well as navigate to a URL. If you type a phrase such as “weather tomorrow,” the browser may treat it as a search query. A web address, by contrast, identifies the resource to open. Make sure the text you paste or type is the actual link, including the site name and any page-specific part after it.

If search results appear unexpectedly, select the address bar again, check that you entered a web address rather than a description or search phrase, and submit the address. When available, choose the browser’s suggestion that represents navigation to the address rather than searching for its text.
Should you include https://?
When you have the complete address, enter it as provided. An address may begin with https://; prefer an HTTPS address for a public website when the site supports it. HTTPS encrypts the connection between your browser and the site, but it does not prove that the site itself is honest or trustworthy.
Browsers may try to use HTTPS when you enter an address without a protocol, but the exact behavior depends on the browser, version, and settings. Chromium announced a default HTTPS upgrade for most typed navigations in Chrome 90 when a site supported HTTPS. Mozilla says Firefox HTTPS-First is enabled by default in version 136 and later. Microsoft describes Edge HTTPS-First Mode as upgrading to HTTPS whenever possible. These are product-specific behaviors, not a guarantee that every browser will upgrade every address or that every website supports HTTPS.

If a browser displays a security or connection warning, do not bypass it simply to reach the page. Check that the address is spelled as intended and that you are visiting the site you meant to open. An HTTPS label is useful for connection privacy, not a substitute for judging whether a website is trustworthy.
When you need to view a specific page
A site’s root domain and a page-specific URL can lead to different resources. If you were given a direct link to a particular page, paste that full link into the address bar rather than shortening it to the domain. Recheck any path or punctuation after the domain if the browser opens the wrong page or cannot find the resource.
- You only know the site: enter the site’s domain to open the address you have.
- You need a particular article or page: ask for or copy its complete URL, then enter that full address.
- The result is unexpected: compare the address in the bar with the link you intended to open, including the site name and any part after it.

The browser shows search results
Check whether you entered a URL or ordinary words. Since the address bar may also be a search box, text that is not a web address can be submitted as a search. Replace it with the full link and choose the navigation suggestion if one appears.

The page is not found or does not load
Review the domain, spelling, punctuation, and any page path after the domain. The browser can display the requested resource only if the request succeeds. If you entered just a domain but expected a particular article or page, get the full page-specific link and try that instead.
The browser warns about the connection
Confirm that the address is the intended one. Use its HTTPS version if the site supports it, but do not treat HTTPS as proof of trustworthiness or ignore a browser warning. HTTPS upgrade behavior varies among browsers, versions, and settings.
You have only a site name, not a link
Enter the domain you know in the address bar. If you need a particular page within the site, ask for that page’s full URL; the domain alone may take you somewhere else.
