Reddit’s age-check process depends on your country, device, account and the content you’re trying to open. You may be asked to confirm a birthday, share an age range through Apple or Google, or complete a Persona selfie or ID check. Not everyone is asked to upload identification.
To start, sign in to Reddit and open the restricted community or feature that prompted the check. Follow the method Reddit offers, then enable the mature-content setting if it is still off. Here’s how the options work, what Reddit says it retains, and what to try if the check fails.
What Reddit’s age check means
Reddit has different age thresholds for account use and mature content. Its general minimum age is 13, subject to higher local requirements. Viewing mature or NSFW content requires users to be at least 18 and to meet any higher minimum that applies where they live. Reddit’s User Agreement sets out the mature-content restriction.

Depending on the account and location, Reddit may use information it already has, accept an age-range signal from an app store or account provider, or ask for verification through Persona. Reddit says its age estimates can draw on signals such as account age, email-related signals, account activity, subscriptions, a birthday in settings, app-store signals and previous verification status. You may be able to use Reddit without completing an age check, but restricted content or some location-specific features may remain unavailable. A check is not a way for someone under 18 to unlock mature content.
How to verify through Reddit’s prompt
- Open Reddit.com in a browser or use the official Reddit app, and sign in to the account you want to use.
- Open the mature community or restricted feature that triggered the prompt.
- Choose the displayed option to confirm or verify your age. The exact wording and available choices can vary.
- Use one of the methods offered: an Apple age-range signal on supported iOS devices, a Google age signal in some regions, or a Persona flow that may ask for a selfie, government ID, or both.
- Complete the instructions on the official Reddit or Persona page, then return to Reddit and reopen the content.
If access does not update, sign out and back in, restart the app, or try Reddit.com in a current browser. Don’t follow an age-check link sent in a private message or upload documents to a site that is not part of the official flow.
Use Apple’s age-range sharing on iPhone or iPad
Where Reddit offers Apple age-range sharing, Apple can provide an age range rather than your exact birthday. To review the setting, open Settings on your iPhone or iPad, tap your name, then go to Personal Information > Age Range for Apps. Choose the available Share with Apps option, such as Always allow, Ask First or Do not share. The options and behavior can vary by region, account controls and software version. Sharing an age range is different from sending Reddit your government ID or exact birthdate. If you decline sharing, Reddit may offer another method or leave the restricted content unavailable.
What to expect from Persona verification
If Reddit directs you to Persona, the flow may request an age-estimation selfie, a government ID, or a selfie matched against an ID photo. The available method depends on the flow and location. Use only the page opened from Reddit’s official prompt; don’t send an ID or selfie to another user or an unofficial “Reddit verification” service.
Reddit says it does not see or store the sensitive documents submitted through Persona and retains the verified age or status. Persona describes itself as the processor for Reddit in this flow and says Reddit is the data controller. Persona says submitted personal information and images are used for age verification and fraud prevention, are not sold or used to train AI models, and are automatically deleted after three days. These are the companies’ published statements, not an independent audit. The three-day statement concerns Persona’s handling of submitted information; it does not establish when Reddit, Apple, Google, your device or a legally required backup deletes other records. Turn on mature-content settings
Verification and the mature-content preference are separate: passing an age check does not necessarily turn the setting on automatically. Labels can vary by Reddit version.

- Old Reddit: Open Preferences. Under content options, select I am over eighteen years old and willing to view adult content. Select the option to include NSFW search results if you want them.
- iPhone and iPad: Reddit says the iOS app no longer has the NSFW-content toggles. Change the preference on Reddit.com in a desktop or mobile browser, then restart the app.
- Android: In the Reddit app, open Settings, scroll to View Options, and turn on Show NSFW Content (I’m over 18).

Requirements vary by country
These are the country and region rules described in Reddit’s published guidance as of August 18, 2026. They are not one universal Reddit process, and the available verification methods can still vary by account and device.

Why Reddit might keep asking
A prompt may appear because Reddit cannot establish your age from the signals available, a regional rule calls for confirmation, or the particular content requires it. A birthday in your account settings may be one signal, but it does not guarantee that Reddit will treat the account as verified. A prompt may also fail to load because you are signed into a different account, using an outdated app or browser session, or trying to change a setting that does not trigger the verification flow.

If the prompt does not appear or verification fails
If no prompt appears: Check that you are signed into the intended account and open the specific restricted community again. Try Reddit.com in a browser. On iOS, change the mature-content setting on Reddit.com rather than looking for the toggle in the app, then restart the app. Update Reddit and your device software. If the age prompt still behaves unexpectedly, contact Reddit through Reddit Help.

If Persona verification fails: Allow camera access, clean the lens and try in good lighting. If asked for ID, use an unexpired, readable document of a supported type; avoid glare, cropping or obscuring details the flow requires. Don’t submit screenshots, edited images, photocopies or another person’s document. A current browser or the official app may help if browser privacy settings are blocking the flow. If Reddit wrongly treats you as underage: Reddit says you can request correction of inaccurate age information or a failed age prediction through its support process. Australia and Brazil also describe additional reactivation steps for accounts suspended under their higher minimum-age rules. Use Reddit’s official support pages rather than trying to alter your location or submit someone else’s information.
Privacy: what Reddit says it keeps
It helps to separate three kinds of information:
- Verification material: A selfie, ID image or related information submitted to Persona. Reddit says it does not see or store the sensitive documents; Persona says it deletes submitted personal information and images after three days for this flow.
- Verification result: Reddit says it stores the verified age or status, not the sensitive documents. Reddit also says verified age is not visible to other redditors or advertisers.
- Existing account information: Reddit may use account and activity signals to estimate an age group. Its Privacy Policy says it may share information with age-verification providers and retain information as needed for the purpose, legitimate business purposes or legal requirements.
Age verification is not the same as Reddit’s separate verified-profiles program for selected people, businesses and organizations. That program concerns profile identity and does not mean an age check makes your profile publicly verified. See Reddit’s announcement about verified profiles.

If your age information is wrong, Reddit says you can request a correction. For requests about age-verification information held by Reddit, Persona directs users to Reddit. Reddit also provides account-data and deletion request routes; the outcome may depend on legal and retention requirements.
Can you use Reddit without verifying?
Often, you can continue using nonrestricted parts of Reddit, but you may not be able to open mature content or use certain features in regions that require confirmation. If you do not want to submit an ID or selfie, use a less intrusive option such as Apple age-range sharing if Reddit offers it and you are comfortable sharing that signal. Declining every available method can mean losing access to restricted content; local rules may also affect anonymous browsing or account access.
Do not use fake documents, another person’s face or ID, unofficial verification sites or a VPN as a workaround. Those methods do not establish your age and can create location or account problems. If you are under 18, Reddit says mature content remains off-limits. Reddit’s teen-safety principles explain its position.
