Install the Windows build of wkhtmltopdf, make sure the folder containing wkhtmltopdf.exe is on your PATH, then verify it with wkhtmltopdf --version. A basic conversion is wkhtmltopdf https://example.com example.pdf. This guide covers installation, PATH, useful options, troubleshooting, and the security and rendering limits of this older HTML-to-PDF tool.
What wkhtmltopdf does—and where its limits begin
wkhtmltopdf is an open-source command-line program that converts web pages or local HTML files to PDF. It renders HTML using Qt WebKit and runs headlessly, so Windows does not need a desktop browser window open for each conversion. The basic pattern is an input page followed by the output PDF path.
That older rendering engine is important: a page that relies on current browser behavior, modern CSS, or complex asynchronous JavaScript may not look or load as it does in a current browser. For simple pages and controlled HTML reports, wkhtmltopdf can still be useful; it is not a safe assumption that every modern website will render faithfully.

Add wkhtmltopdf to PATH when Windows cannot find it
PATH is the list of directories Windows searches when you enter a command without its full location. Add the directory that contains wkhtmltopdf.exe—not the executable file itself—to either your user PATH or system PATH. A common example installation directory is C:Program Fileswkhtmltopdfbin, but use the actual location chosen during installation.

Make your first PDF
Convert a web page
In PowerShell or Command Prompt, run:
wkhtmltopdf https://example.com C:workexample.pdf
The first argument is the page to load; the last is the output filename. Ensure the destination directory exists and that you have permission to write there.
Convert a local HTML file
For a local file, provide its path as the input:
wkhtmltopdf C:workinvoice.html C:workinvoice.pdf
Local images, stylesheets, or fonts referenced by that HTML may need additional permission or may fail to load. The relevant local-file options are described below.
Use multiple page objects, covers, or a table of contents
Some builds support multiple page objects, cover pages, and tables of contents. The command-line reference for the installed build is the authority for which features and syntax it includes. Check wkhtmltopdf -H before relying on those options; builds can differ.

Options for page layout, assets, and timing
Pass options before the input and output arguments. Confirm accepted spellings and defaults with wkhtmltopdf -H for the binary installed on your machine.
Set paper size, orientation, and margins
For example, use A4 paper in landscape orientation and set the top margin to 12 millimeters:
wkhtmltopdf --page-size A4 --orientation Landscape --margin-top 12mm https://example.com C:worklandscape.pdf
Use --margin-right, --margin-bottom, and --margin-left to control the other margins. Choose units and values that suit the document; the example is not a universal print layout.
Allow local images and stylesheets narrowly
Some builds block local-file access by default. If the HTML needs local assets, enable access where appropriate with:

Where supported, a narrower permission is preferable. For example:
wkhtmltopdf --allow C:workassets C:workinvoice.html C:workinvoice.pdf

Broad local-file access can expose files the HTML should not read, especially when processing content from other people.
Wait for JavaScript-rendered content
JavaScript is enabled by default in typical builds. For a page that fills in content shortly after initial load, try a delay such as:
wkhtmltopdf --javascript-delay 1000 https://example.com C:workdelayed.pdf
The delay is in milliseconds. It gives scripts more time but does not make an unsupported browser engine compatible with modern site code, and a fixed wait can be either too short or unnecessarily long.
Recommended Free Tools
If the page sets a known window status after rendering, use --window-status with that value instead of guessing a delay:
wkhtmltopdf --window-status READY https://example.com C:workready.pdf
The page must actually set that status; otherwise the conversion may wait or fail. To prevent scripts from running, use --disable-javascript.

Pass credentials, cookies, headers, or a proxy
Options include --username and --password for supported basic authentication, --cookie for cookies, --custom-header for request headers, and --proxy for a proxy. Consult the installed command’s help for exact argument syntax. Treat credentials and cookie values as secrets: command lines may be visible to other processes or retained in shell history, so avoid embedding sensitive values in scripts or logs that other users can read.
Inspect logs and JavaScript errors
Use --log-level info for more conversion detail, or --debug-javascript to help investigate script-related behavior. Keep errors visible while diagnosing missing resources; suppressing them can leave a PDF that appears successful but is incomplete.
Troubleshoot common Windows failures
“wkhtmltopdf is not recognized”
Windows cannot locate the executable through PATH. Run where wkhtmltopdf; if it finds nothing, use the full executable path or add the installation’s bin folder to PATH, then open a new terminal.
The command runs, but the output file is missing
Check that the destination directory exists, the output path is spelled correctly, and your account can write there. Try a simple public URL and a known local HTML file to distinguish a general install problem from a page-specific one.
Images, CSS, or fonts are missing
Confirm that each asset URL is reachable from the conversion process. For local assets, check the HTML’s paths and use --enable-local-file-access or a narrow --allow path if the installed build requires it. Do not grant wider file access than needed.
The PDF is blank or lacks late-loading content
First confirm that the page loads successfully outside wkhtmltopdf. Then try --javascript-delay for a short wait or --window-status if the page exposes a reliable ready state. If the page depends on browser capabilities absent from this WebKit engine, waiting longer will not fix the underlying incompatibility.
One failed resource stops the conversion
Identify the failed URL or local resource before changing error handling. The option --load-error-handling ignore can be appropriate only when you understand and accept the missing-resource consequences. Otherwise, keep failures visible so the PDF is not mistaken for a complete result.
You need help reproducing the problem
Include the wkhtmltopdf version, Windows version, exact command with secrets removed, and a minimal reproducible HTML/CSS/JavaScript example. This makes it possible to separate an installation issue from a page or rendering-engine issue.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Security and maintenance: know when to move on
The wkhtmltopdf project’s status guidance says Qt 4 has been unsupported since 2015 and the WebKit used by wkhtmltopdf has not been updated since 2012. It warns against using wkhtmltopdf with untrusted HTML, noting that unsanitized user-supplied HTML or JavaScript can lead to complete takeover of the server running it. Those warnings matter even if a command works on your Windows machine: a converter processes active content and may have access to files or credentials available to its account.
-
Do not feed arbitrary user HTML or JavaScript into a privileged conversion process. Sanitizing input is important, but isolation and least privilege are also necessary.

If the task is capturing a web page as an image or PDF rather than maintaining a local wkhtmltopdf installation, ScreenshotNeo offers a website screenshot API and MCP server. For a one-call image capture, use cURL, replacing the example URL and key with your own:
curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp
See the ScreenshotNeo API documentation for request options and PDF capture. Other client examples:
Python
import requests
r = requests.get("https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot", params={"access_key": "YOUR_API_KEY", "url": "https://stripe.com"}, timeout=90)
open("shot.webp", "wb").write(r.content)
Node.js
const q = new URLSearchParams({ access_key: 'YOUR_API_KEY', url: 'https://stripe.com' });
const res = await fetch(`https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot?${q}`);
ScreenshotNeo removes cookie banners, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before capture; bot checks, blank pages, and failed loads are not billed. Its MCP server lets AI agents take screenshots. Frequently Asked Questions
Does wkhtmltopdf need Chrome or a visible browser window?
No. It uses Qt WebKit and runs headlessly; a display server or visible browser window is not required.
Can I use wkhtmltopdf to convert a page that requires a login?
It provides username, password, cookie, custom-header, and proxy options, but a site’s authentication flow may still be incompatible with its older rendering engine. Check the installed binary’s help for exact syntax.
Is wkhtmltopdf a good choice for converting untrusted HTML?
No. The project’s status guidance warns that unsanitized user HTML or JavaScript can compromise the system running the converter. Prefer a maintained, appropriately isolated workflow for untrusted input.
