Press Windows+Shift+S to open the Snipping Tool overlay. Choose rectangular, freeform, window, or full-screen capture; select the area or window when prompted; then paste the image with Ctrl+V or open the notification to edit and save it. The shortcut copies the capture to the clipboard first, so it does not necessarily create a file immediately.
What Windows+Shift+S does
Windows+Shift+S is the keyboard shortcut for an image snip in Windows. After you press it, the desktop dims and a Snipping Tool mode bar appears. Your choice determines whether you draw an area, select a window, or capture the whole screen.
- Clipboard-first: the resulting image is copied automatically, ready for Ctrl+V in an editor, document, email, chat, or other app.
- Notification: Windows normally shows a notification. Selecting it opens the image in Snipping Tool for markup, cropping, text actions, saving, or sharing.
- Still image: this shortcut takes a picture, not a video. Use Windows+Shift+R for video snipping.
Step-by-step: take and save a screenshot
- Prepare the screen. Open the page, app, menu, or document you want to capture. Close anything that should not appear in the image.
- Open Snipping Tool. Press Windows+Shift+S together. The desktop will dim and the capture controls will appear at the top.
- Choose a mode. Select rectangular, freeform, window, or full-screen snip.
- Select the target. Drag over the desired area for a rectangular or freeform snip. For window mode, select the window. Full-screen mode captures immediately.
- Use the result. Press Ctrl+V in another app to paste the clipboard copy, or select the Snipping Tool notification to open the editor.
- Save a file. In Snipping Tool, select the Save button or press Ctrl+S. Pick a filename, format, and folder, then confirm Save.
- Share if needed. Use Snipping Tool’s Share command to send the image through an available Windows sharing destination.
Choose the right capture mode
| Mode | How you select it | Best use |
|---|---|---|
| Rectangular snip | Drag a rectangle around the required content. | A precise section of a webpage, app, or document. |
| Freeform snip | Draw an irregular outline around the subject. | Objects that do not fit a rectangle. |
| Window snip | Select an open window after choosing the mode. | A complete app window without manually trimming the desktop. |
| Full-screen snip | Select the mode; the capture occurs immediately. | Every visible monitor area included by the tool. |
Rectangular and freeform modes require a drag. Window and full-screen modes can capture without drawing an area, which is useful when speed matters or when accurate edges are important.
Where the screenshot goes
Clipboard destination
Immediately after capture, the image is in the Windows clipboard. Open the destination app and press Ctrl+V. If you take another screenshot or copy other content, the clipboard changes, so paste the image before continuing with unrelated copy operations.

Snipping Tool editor
Select the capture notification to open the image in Snipping Tool. From there you can annotate, crop, save, or share it. If the notification disappears, open Snipping Tool from the Start menu and use its recent capture workflow where available.
Automatic file saving on current Windows 11
Current Windows 11 versions may automatically save captures in the Screenshots folder. This behavior depends on Snipping Tool settings and can be changed there. Do not rely on automatic saving when a specific filename or destination matters: use Save or Ctrl+S and choose the folder yourself.
Edit, annotate, and extract information
The Snipping Tool editor includes a pen, highlighter, shapes, eraser, crop, and text actions. Markup is useful for pointing to a control, obscuring a detail, or trimming unused margins before you save.
Text actions use local optical character recognition (OCR). They can copy text from the image and quickly redact detected email addresses or phone numbers. Check the result before sharing: OCR and redaction should be treated as assistance, not as a guarantee that every sensitive character has been removed.
Capture menus and other temporary interface elements
A menu can close as soon as you press the shortcut. To capture it, open Snipping Tool first rather than invoking the shortcut at the last moment, then set its delay option to 1–5 seconds. Start the delayed capture, open or arrange the menu during the countdown, and let the snip begin with the menu visible.

Delay is also useful for hover tooltips, right-click menus, and dialogs that require a few seconds of setup. A normal immediate snip is better for static content because it avoids waiting and reduces the chance that the screen changes before capture.
Keyboard-only and screen-reader workflow
If using a mouse is not practical, Microsoft documents a keyboard sequence for the snipping-mode menu:
- Press Windows+Shift+S.
- Use Tab to move through the mode controls.
- Use the arrow keys to choose a mode and Enter to activate it.
- Complete the selection with the keyboard controls provided by the selected mode.
After a successful capture, accessibility feedback can announce “Screenshot copied to clipboard.” If you do not hear or see that confirmation, test the Windows key and verify that the keyboard is sending the shortcut correctly.

Related Windows screenshot shortcuts
| Shortcut | Result | When to use it |
|---|---|---|
| Windows+Shift+S | Opens Snipping Tool image capture modes. | You need a selected region, window, or full-screen still image. |
| Windows+Shift+R | Opens video snipping. | You need to record motion rather than take one frame. |
| Print Screen | Captures a static full-screen image to the clipboard. | You want the entire screen immediately and do not need an area selection. |
These shortcuts serve different workflows: Windows+Shift+S offers selection control, Print Screen is the quickest full-screen clipboard capture, and Windows+Shift+R is for video.
Troubleshooting Windows+Shift+S
Nothing happens
- Confirm that the keyboard’s Windows logo key works by opening the Start menu.
- Press the three keys together rather than holding one key long after the others.
- Try the shortcut with a Windows-compatible keyboard that has a working Windows key. If an external keyboard is involved, reconnect it and test another USB or Bluetooth connection.
- Open Snipping Tool from Start to determine whether the app works even if the shortcut does not.
The screenshot copied, but I cannot find a file
That is expected in a clipboard-first workflow. Paste it into an app, select the notification to open Snipping Tool, or open the editor and use Save/Ctrl+S. Check Snipping Tool’s settings if you expect automatic saving to the Screenshots folder.

The wrong window or area was captured
Press the shortcut again and choose the correct mode. Window mode depends on selecting the intended window; rectangular mode gives you manual boundaries. For a menu or tooltip that vanished, use the delayed capture procedure.
The notification is missing
The clipboard capture may still have succeeded. Test by pressing Ctrl+V in Paint or another image-capable app. If the paste works, save from that app or adjust Windows notification settings so Snipping Tool notifications are allowed.

Local OCR detects recognizable email addresses and phone numbers, but visual inspection remains necessary. Use the pen or shapes to cover any additional sensitive content, then save a new copy and verify it before sharing.
Where are Perfect screenshot and Color picker?
Those Snipping Tool features are limited to Windows 11 Copilot+ PCs. They are not universal Snipping Tool options, so their absence on another Windows computer does not indicate that Windows+Shift+S is broken.
When an automated website capture is a better fit
Windows+Shift+S is designed for the screen in front of you. Or skip the browser setup
ScreenshotNeo is separate from the local Windows shortcut: you give it a URL and it captures the webpage. Before the capture, it accepts the cookie or consent banner like a visitor and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets; each cleanup step can be turned off. Bot checks or CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits cost nothing, and response headers identify the page verdict and whether it was billed. Its MCP tools—take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf—let Claude, Cursor, or another MCP client request captures.
Use the ScreenshotNeo documentation for authentication and options. This one-call example captures a webpage as a WebP file:
curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://freedom251.com -o shot.webp
Equivalent Python:
import requests
r = requests.get("https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot", params={"access_key": "YOUR_API_KEY", "url": "https://freedom251.com"}, timeout=90)
open("shot.webp", "wb").write(r.content)
Equivalent Node.js:
const q = new URLSearchParams({ access_key: 'YOUR_API_KEY', url: 'https://freedom251.com' });
const res = await fetch(`https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot?${q}`);
ScreenshotNeo includes full-page and element captures, lazy-image loading, device presets, custom viewports, retina scale, dark mode, PDF controls, custom CSS and JavaScript, clicks, waits, request blocking, headers, cookies, user agents, authorization, timezone and geolocation settings, transparent backgrounds, resizing, TTL caching, signed links, asynchronous jobs with signed webhooks, bulk capture for up to 100 URLs per call, a usage API, and an OpenAPI specification. Parameter names used by other screenshot APIs also work, which can simplify migration.
Every feature is available on every plan. The Free plan includes 1,000 screenshots per month with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 screenshots. Create a free ScreenshotNeo account to try automated captures without entering a card.
