VLC is available as a free VideoLAN app for Apple TV. For a single video, the quickest method is VLC’s Remote Playback feature, which uploads the file from a phone or computer through a browser. For a permanent collection, connect VLC to a Windows, Mac, NAS, Plex, or other media server over the local network.
VLC for Apple TV supports Apple TV HD and every generation of Apple TV 4K running tvOS 11.0 or later. VideoLAN lists support for MKV, multiple audio and subtitle tracks, SMB, NFS, FTP, SFTP, UPnP/DLNA, Plex, and compatible network streams. That broad support does not guarantee perfect playback of every codec, HDR profile, audio format, or high-bitrate file.
What VLC on Apple TV does
Apple TV hardware, the Apple TV app, and VLC are different things:

- Apple TV is Apple’s streaming box.
- The Apple TV app provides Apple’s video storefront and subscription services.
- VLC for Apple TV is a separate VideoLAN player for your own files, network libraries, and compatible streams.
VLC is not a replacement for Netflix, Apple TV subscriptions, or other DRM-protected services. It is intended primarily for personal, downloaded, ripped, home-recorded, or self-hosted media.

VideoLAN’s current Apple TV page lists VLC version 3.7.0 and requires tvOS 11.0 or later. Check the official compatibility page and the App Store listing for the version available in your region.
What you need
- An Apple TV HD or Apple TV 4K.
- tvOS 11.0 or later.
- The VLC media player app installed from the App Store.
- A video file, shared folder, NAS, or media server.
- The Apple TV and source computer or server on the same local network for Remote Playback and most local-network connections.
Ethernet is preferable for very high-bitrate video when your Apple TV model and network support it. Wi-Fi can work well, but weak signals, guest networks, and client isolation can prevent discovery or cause buffering. Apple TV storage is also limited, so uploaded files should be treated as temporary local copies rather than archival storage.
Install VLC on Apple TV
- Open the App Store on Apple TV.
- Search for VLC media player.
- Confirm that the developer is VideoLAN.
- Select Get or the download button.
- Open VLC after installation.
- Allow local-network access if tvOS asks for it.
VLC is free and open source. If a network feature behaves unexpectedly, update both VLC and tvOS before spending time on more complicated troubleshooting.
The easiest method: upload a video with Remote Playback
Use Remote Playback when you want to watch one or a few files without configuring a file server. The file is transferred to the Apple TV over your local network.
- Open VLC on Apple TV.
- Select Remote Playback.
- Note the web address shown on the TV.
- On a computer or phone connected to the same network, open that address in a browser.
- Drag a video onto the page, or use its file-selection control.
- Wait for the upload to finish.
- Select the transferred file in VLC and start playback.
VLC’s Remote Playback documentation and announcement describe browser uploads for one or more files and support for pasting compatible stream URLs. The computer or phone must remain available during the upload, but it does not necessarily need to remain on after the transfer completes.
Remote Playback limitations
- The entire file is transferred; VLC is not simply reading it live from your computer.
- Large files may take substantial time to upload.
- The Apple TV needs enough free storage.
- Cache retention can change, so do not use the Apple TV as permanent storage.
- Remote Playback is less convenient than a server for a large library.
If the page will not load, verify the network, type the address exactly as displayed, temporarily disable a VPN, try another browser, and retry with a small file. Keep VLC open on Apple TV throughout the transfer.

Play files from Windows or macOS with SMB
SMB is usually the best choice when your videos are stored in a shared folder on a Windows PC, Mac, or NAS. Unlike Remote Playback, the files remain on the source device.

- Create a dedicated media folder.
- Set the network connection to a trusted private network.
- Enable network discovery and file sharing.
- Share the media folder with a specific Windows account.
- Give that account read permission for the folder.
- Use a password-protected account instead of an unsecured guest share where possible.
- Keep the PC awake and connected to the network while playing.
Prepare a Mac
- Open macOS System Settings and go to General > Sharing.
- Enable File Sharing.
- Add the media folder to the shared folders list.
- Set read permission for the account VLC will use.
- Enable SMB access for that user if macOS presents a user-specific sharing option.
Menu names vary between macOS releases. VideoLAN’s SMB documentation explains the general model, but its iPhone and iPad labels should not be assumed to match every tvOS build exactly.
Connect from VLC
Open VLC’s local-network or server-browsing area and select the discovered computer or NAS. If discovery fails, use the option to add a server manually, if exposed by your build. You may need:
- The server’s local IP address or hostname.
- The SMB share name.
- Your Windows or Mac username.
- The account password.
- A folder path, if VLC requests one.
Use the connection form shown by your current VLC release rather than relying on a hard-coded URI format. Discovery and access are separate: a server may appear but still reject credentials or deny access to the selected folder.
Choose another network method

Plex is a server, not a magic folder browser
VLC’s Plex support means it can act as a playback client for an existing Plex library. VLC does not create a Plex library or install Plex Media Server. Plex’s official plans page explains the distinction between local-network streaming, server software, remote access, and premium features. Do not buy Plex Pass merely to play files locally unless you need a feature that specifically requires it.

Control playback, tracks, and subtitles
During playback, open VLC’s playback controls to use the functions exposed by your current tvOS build. VideoLAN lists:
- Play and pause.
- Scrubbing, seeking, and fine seeking.
- Playback-speed controls.
- Selection of multiple audio tracks.
- Selection of embedded subtitle tracks.
- Audio and subtitle delay adjustment.
- Picture scaling or aspect-ratio controls where available.
- Bluetooth headphone integration, including support listed for AirPods and spatial audio.
Siri Remote gestures and button behavior can change between VLC releases. The App Store release notes mention Apple Remote and gesture improvements, so use the on-screen controls rather than assuming desktop VLC shortcuts apply.
Multiple audio tracks
Open the audio-track selector and choose the desired language, commentary track, or alternate mix. If the file contains several tracks, VLC may list them by language or track order. A missing option usually means the file does not contain that track or VLC cannot read its metadata.
Subtitles
VLC can read supported embedded subtitle tracks and VideoLAN specifically lists SSA subtitle support. Select the subtitle track from the playback controls, then adjust subtitle timing if the text leads or lags the dialogue. Some files use external subtitle files, while others contain image-based subtitles; rendering, fonts, styling, and compatibility can vary.
Network streams
VLC can open compatible network streams such as HLS, MMS, and RTSP. A stream still has to be reachable and supported. VLC cannot bypass DRM, expired URLs, authentication, geo-restrictions, firewall rules, or a service that requires its own proprietary client.
If a URL fails, check whether it has expired, requires login, is restricted to a particular region, or is blocked by the network. Do not use VLC to bypass paywalls, access controls, or copyright restrictions.

Troubleshooting VLC on Apple TV
VLC cannot see the computer or NAS
- Confirm that Apple TV and the server use the same home network.
- Avoid guest Wi-Fi and client-isolation networks.
- Confirm that the computer or NAS is powered on and awake.
- Test the shared folder from another computer.
- Try the server’s local IP address instead of its hostname.
- Check the server and router firewall settings.
- Verify the shared-folder permissions and password.
- Try manual connection instead of discovery.
- Restart VLC and Apple TV.
- Update VLC and tvOS.
The server appears but login fails
Check the username format, password, account permissions, share name, and server authentication settings. Seeing a server does not prove that the account can read the requested folder. Guest access, SMB-version negotiation, and firewall rules can also cause failures.
Files appear but will not open
Check whether the file is complete and still being copied. Then consider permissions, an unsupported authentication mode, unusual characters in the path, or a codec, container, subtitle, or audio track that VLC cannot process correctly.
Playback stutters or buffers
- Network problem: Try Ethernet or a smaller file. If playback improves after buffering, throughput may be the issue.
- Server problem: Check whether the PC or NAS is overloaded.
- Local playback problem: Upload the file with Remote Playback. If it still stutters locally, the network is less likely to be the cause.
- Audio or subtitle processing: Try another audio track or disable subtitles temporarily.
- Container problem: Remuxing to MKV or MP4 can be a fallback, but conversion should not be your first requirement.
“VLC plays everything” should be understood as broad format support, not a guarantee of smooth playback for every 4K file, bitrate, codec combination, HDR profile, or audio path.
HDR, Dolby Vision, Atmos, DTS, or lossless audio is wrong
Playback and output are different questions. The Apple TV model, tvOS, HDMI connection, television, receiver, and VLC build all affect the result. A file may play while HDR is lost, audio is converted, or a receiver falls back to stereo. VLC’s broad format support does not guarantee perfect Dolby Vision, Dolby Atmos, DTS, Blu-ray ISO, or lossless-audio passthrough.
If demanding home-theater compatibility and a poster-based library matter more than a free player, compare VLC with an app such as Infuse, which advertises broader premium format and audio support. Treat those advertised capabilities as a reason to evaluate the app, not as a guarantee for every file and receiver.

- Confirm both devices are on the same local network.
- Type the address exactly as VLC displays it.
- Temporarily disable a VPN or split-tunnel connection.
- Try another browser or device.
- Check whether Apple TV received a new IP address.
- Keep VLC open during the upload.
- Check free Apple TV storage.
- Retry with a small file.
The network-share screen is broken after an update
Update VLC first. VideoLAN’s issue tracker contains reports involving Apple TV local-network access and the Connect to Server workflow. These are reports of version-specific problems, not evidence that every installation is affected. If the screen is missing or unusable, try Remote Playback, check the relevant VideoLAN issue, or use another client temporarily. Reinstalling has been reported by a user as a workaround in one issue, but it is not a universal documented fix.

VLC alternatives on Apple TV
- Infuse: A library-focused option for artwork, metadata, network sources, and demanding home-theater formats. It is a paid upgrade path, not a requirement for ordinary playback.
- Plex: Best when you want a server-managed catalog, user accounts, metadata, and access across many devices.
- Native server apps: Consider the official Plex, Jellyfin, or other server client if you already use that platform.
- Apple’s built-in apps: Use them for Apple purchases and subscription content that VLC cannot play because of DRM.
For one downloaded file, VLC Remote Playback is usually simpler than configuring Plex or a NAS. For a large library, SMB or a dedicated media server is more practical.

Apple TV does not provide the same general USB file-browsing workflow as a computer. Use Remote Playback, a network share, or a media server instead.
Can VLC connect to a NAS?
