Use Udio by describing the song you want, generating a vocal or instrumental version, refining lyrics and style, then extending or transforming the audio and polishing it in Sessions. You can try the free plan, but Udio’s current transition period disables audio, video, and stem downloads, so check Udio’s site for the latest availability before building a workflow around exporting a finished track.
What You Need Before You Start
Udio is a prompt-led song creation tool with lyric tools, audio transformations, and timeline editing. The listed access is through Udio’s website; mobile app availability is not established here, so check the site if you plan to work from a phone. Its free plan lists 10 daily credits and 100 monthly credits. The Standard plan is listed at $10 per month, billed monthly, with 2,400 credits per month. A 7-day trial is also listed; confirm the current offer and terms on Udio before signing up.
Before generating, decide whether you need vocals or an instrumental, what mood and style you want, and what the song should do. A clear brief helps you revise one element at a time instead of changing the whole direction with every prompt.

How To Create Your First Song
- Open Udio and start a creation. Sign in or follow the current signup flow on Udio’s website. The exact interface may change, so use the controls shown in your account.
- Write a specific prompt. Describe the sound, energy, instrumentation, vocal approach, and intended use. For example: “A restrained, reflective acoustic song with a close, gentle lead vocal, sparse guitar, and a gradual lift into the chorus.” This is a creative prompt example, not a guarantee that Udio offers a named genre preset or a particular instrument control.
- Choose vocal or instrumental direction. Udio supports generating vocal or instrumental songs from text prompts and lyrics. If you want words sung, provide lyrics or use its lyric tools; for a track without vocals, state that you want an instrumental.
- Review the generated result against your brief. Listen for the elements you asked for: vocal feel, energy, arrangement, and whether the result has the right overall shape. If one element misses, revise the prompt around that element rather than rewriting everything.
- Refine the lyrics and style. Udio lists lyric editing, voice-reference blending, and style shaping. Try a focused change, such as making the vocal delivery softer or revising one lyric passage. Check the controls available in your account for the exact editing options.
- Extend or transform the audio when the idea needs development. Udio supports extending and transforming audio. Use this after you have a section or direction you want to carry forward, and describe the intended change plainly. Exact extension lengths and transformation controls are not established here; consult Udio’s current interface.
- Refine the timeline in Sessions. Udio describes Sessions as a place to refine the result. Use it after generation and broader changes, when you are ready to work on the song’s timeline. The specific editing controls are not stated here, so verify what your account currently provides.

- Make the first prompt describe the whole idea in a few concrete details rather than stacking unrelated styles or moods.
- When revising, change one thing at a time so you can tell whether the result moved in the direction you wanted.
- Save the wording that produced a useful direction before experimenting further; the listed credit limits make it sensible to plan revisions.
- Check your remaining credits and current generation costs in Udio. The number of credits consumed by an individual action is not stated here.
- Confirm export availability before spending time on a deliverable that must be downloaded: downloads are currently disabled during Udio’s transition period.
