You can now use two WhatsApp accounts at once in the official WhatsApp app on iPhone. You’ll need two different phone numbers and access to the second number for verification. Update WhatsApp, open Settings, tap the profile or account-switching control, choose Add account, and verify the second number. Meta announced the iOS feature on March 26, 2026; if the option hasn’t appeared in your app, WhatsApp Business is an official fallback. Meta’s announcement
What you need
- Two different phone numbers. Each WhatsApp account needs its own number; Dual SIM does not let you create two accounts from one number.
- Access to the second number. It must be able to receive WhatsApp’s verification SMS or, if offered, an automated call. It does not have to be the line you use for mobile data.
- The official, updated WhatsApp app. Check the App Store for an update before you start.
- A recent chat backup. Especially important before deleting or reinstalling an app, changing a registered number, or moving chats into WhatsApp Business.
Meta’s earlier guidance says the second account requires another phone number and SIM, or a phone that supports multiple SIMs or eSIMs. WhatsApp’s multi-account guidance
Add a second account in WhatsApp
- Make sure the second number works. Confirm that its SIM or eSIM is active and can receive a text or call. If it is in this iPhone, you can check its status under Settings > Cellular.
- Update WhatsApp. Open the App Store, search for WhatsApp, and install any available update. Don’t delete the app as a first troubleshooting step; confirm your chats are backed up before considering a reinstall.
- Open WhatsApp’s account control. Go to Settings and tap your profile or name area, or look for an account-switching control such as a small arrow or +. The precise layout can vary with app version, language, and rollout.
- Tap Add account. Make sure this is the WhatsApp control—not Linked devices, Change number, or an Accounts Center option. Those do different things.
- Enter the second number and verify it. Select the correct country code, enter the number, and type the code WhatsApp sends. Don’t enter your first account’s number again: that won’t create a separate account.
- Set up the account. Add a name and profile photo, then review its privacy, notifications, chat backup, media download, and two-step verification settings. WhatsApp says privacy and notification settings can be managed separately for each account.
When setup is complete, both accounts can remain signed in on the iPhone. Meta says the active account’s profile picture appears in the bottom tab. See Meta’s iOS multi-account announcement

Use the same profile or account-switching control to select the account you want. Check the profile picture or account indicator before sending a sensitive message, particularly when moving between work and personal chats.

Give the accounts noticeably different profile photos and names. Then send a test message to each account and check that its notifications arrive as expected. Notification previews, Focus modes, and Scheduled Summary can make alerts less obvious; check each account’s WhatsApp notification settings and your iPhone’s notification settings if an alert seems to be missing.
If “Add account” is missing
Meta described the iOS feature as rolling out, so not seeing it does not necessarily mean your iPhone cannot use it. Try this sequence:
- Install any WhatsApp update from the App Store, then force-close and reopen WhatsApp.
- Check the profile or name area in Settings for an arrow, plus icon, or account switcher rather than looking under Linked devices.
- Restart the iPhone and check again.
- Confirm you have the official WhatsApp app. Check iPhone permissions and notification access under Settings > WhatsApp if those are part of the problem.
- If the feature still isn’t available, consider the WhatsApp Business fallback below. Back up chats before deleting or reinstalling either app.
If it remains unavailable, contact WhatsApp support. The option’s absence may reflect staged availability or account state, not a setting you missed. Meta’s announcement notes the rollout
Official fallback: WhatsApp and WhatsApp Business
If native account switching isn’t available in your app, you can keep one number in standard WhatsApp and register the other in the official WhatsApp Business app for iPhone. Install it from the App Store, verify the second number, and set up its profile. The App Store listing says the personal and Business apps can coexist on one device when they use different numbers.
Business is a separate app designed for businesses, with tools such as automated and away messages, labels, business profiles, and catalogues in supported markets. It may be more than you need for two personal accounts. The app is free to download and use, with some paid features. Its listing also describes restoring a WhatsApp backup when transferring chats, media, and contacts to a business account; don’t assume that a migration is automatically reversible or risk-free. Check your backup and migration details before proceeding.
Dual SIM and eSIM: what they do and don’t do
Dual SIM or eSIM gives your iPhone access to two cellular numbers; WhatsApp still needs to register each account separately. After registration, WhatsApp messages use an internet connection, so the second number generally does not have to be selected for cellular data. Keep it available for verification, and avoid casually registering that account as the primary account on another phone.

To check lines on your iPhone, open Settings > Cellular and look under SIMs. If needed, tap a line and choose Turn On This Line. You can set preferred lines for cellular data and the default voice line there. Apple says supported configurations depend on the model: one physical SIM and one eSIM on iPhone SE (2nd generation), iPhone XR, XS, 11, 12, 13, 14, and later; two eSIMs on iPhone SE (3rd generation), iPhone 13, and later. SIM and eSIM availability also depends on country, region, and carrier; using two different carriers generally requires an unlocked iPhone. Apple’s Dual SIM setup guide
Verification, backups, and account security
- No verification code? Check the country code and number, make sure the correct SIM/eSIM line is on, and turn off Airplane Mode if it is enabled. Wait for WhatsApp’s resend timer rather than repeatedly requesting codes; try call verification if the app offers it. Never share a verification code with anyone.
- Secure both accounts. Turn on two-step verification for each and review linked devices separately for each account.
- Protect chat history. Check backup settings for both accounts before removing apps or moving an account. A backup restore into WhatsApp Business can change how chats are organized or migrated.
- Don’t confuse switching with moving an account. Switching between accounts in WhatsApp is not the same as registering a number again on another primary phone, which can affect the active session. Linking a device gives companion access; it is not a second independent account.
- Use official apps only. Avoid modified WhatsApp downloads and third-party “clone” or “parallel space” apps. WhatsApp advises users to use the official app rather than imitations. WhatsApp’s guidance
Limits and which method to use
For most people with a personal and work number, the native feature is the simplest choice: one official app, two signed-in accounts, and an account switcher. WhatsApp’s iOS announcement confirms two accounts; it does not establish support for three or more. Don’t use unofficial cloning apps to try to exceed that limit.
Use WhatsApp Business as a fallback if native support hasn’t reached your app, or if its business tools suit your second account. The official sources confirm two WhatsApp accounts on iOS and the coexistence of standard WhatsApp with WhatsApp Business, but they don’t clearly establish every possible combination—for example, two WhatsApp Business accounts. Check the current apps’ support and compatibility before relying on that setup.
Two iPhones remain an option if you need physical separation or more than the officially documented two-account arrangement, but they are unnecessary for ordinary two-number use. A linked device is useful for companion access to an existing account, not for creating another independent account.

No, not if you already have a second number that can receive the verification code. Dual SIM or eSIM is one way to keep two cellular lines on the iPhone; it does not create the WhatsApp accounts for you.

Can the second number be on another phone?
It can, provided you can receive its verification code. Be cautious about registering that account as the primary account on another phone, since that may affect its active session.
Can I use two WhatsApp Business accounts?
The official sources confirm two WhatsApp accounts on iOS and that standard WhatsApp can coexist with WhatsApp Business, but they don’t clearly confirm every two-Business-account combination. Check current app compatibility before depending on it.
Will both accounts receive notifications?
Each account has its own notification settings, but delivery and presentation can also depend on iPhone settings such as Focus and Scheduled Summary. Check both accounts and send a test message to each.

Can I have three WhatsApp accounts on an iPhone?
