To use Stack Overflow’s public MCP server, add its remote endpoint to an MCP-compatible client using npx and mcp-remote, then sign in to Stack Exchange and approve access. Restart the client afterward. The documented tools are so_search for searching questions and get_content for retrieving questions, answers, or comments by ID.

What the public Stack Overflow MCP server does

The public Stack Overflow MCP server lets compatible AI tools and agent runtimes retrieve Stack Overflow content. It is a hosted service: the documented configuration starts a local mcp-remote connection to mcp.stackoverflow.com, rather than asking you to install or run the Stack Overflow server itself. See the public Stack Overflow MCP endpoint.

The official documentation describes two tools: so_search, which performs lexical search over questions, and get_content, which fetches content—including questions, answers, and comments—using an ID. These are the tools documented at the time of writing; the documentation says additional tools may be added in future phases.

What you need before connecting

  • An MCP-compatible client or agent runtime that supports the documented configuration format.
  • A Stack Overflow account. During setup, you will be sent to Stack Exchange to log in and authorize access.
  • A working environment in which the client can run npx and the mcp-remote package. If your client cannot launch that command, check its command-execution and Node.js/npm setup before troubleshooting the remote service.

Connect the server to an MCP client

The official setup example uses a server entry named stack-mcp-server. Add the following configuration to the MCP client’s server configuration, preserving the command and arguments:

      ]
    }
  }
}
  1. Open your MCP client’s configuration for MCP servers. The exact file location and restart behavior depend on the client; use its own configuration instructions rather than assuming all clients store this file in the same place.
  2. Add the JSON entry above under mcpServers. If the file already has other server entries, keep them and add this as another member of the object. Ensure commas and braces remain valid JSON.
  3. Save the configuration and start or reload the client. The client should invoke npx mcp-remote mcp.stackoverflow.com.
  4. When the authentication flow opens, sign in to Stack Exchange, authorize the client, and accept the terms. Do not approve access unless you intended to connect this client.
  5. Quit and reopen the MCP client after authorization, as the official setup flow instructs.
  6. Open the client’s MCP tools or ask it to perform a Stack Overflow lookup. Confirm that it can see the documented tools before relying on results.

Use the documented tools

Search questions with so_search

so_search performs lexical search over questions. Ask the client to search for a specific error message, API behavior, or programming concept, then review the returned questions and decide which are relevant. A lexical search is a way to find matching question text; it is not a guarantee that the result is authoritative, current, or the best answer to your particular situation.

The public documentation reviewed here names the tool and describes its purpose, but does not specify a complete argument schema or output format. Use the tool description exposed by your MCP client to see the fields it accepts. Avoid assuming a particular parameter name, filtering syntax, or result limit unless the client presents it.

Retrieve a post and its discussion with get_content

Use get_content when you have an ID and want the associated content. The documented scope includes questions, answers, and comments. For example, after a search identifies a relevant post, ask the client to retrieve its content by ID so you can inspect the source material and discussion.

The documentation describes retrieval by ID but does not establish the exact ID field name or response shape. Check the tool’s displayed schema and use the ID in the form the client supplies. Treat retrieved posts as source material to evaluate, not as a substitute for checking whether advice matches your software version and circumstances.

How many calls are allowed?

Stack Exchange’s official MCP documentation states a limit of 100 calls per day per Stack Exchange user. The page does not state a publication date for that limit, so regard it as subject to change and confirm the current figure in the official documentation before designing a high-volume integration. The documentation says users with higher-volume use cases should contact sales.

For a workflow that searches and then fetches content, plan for both operations to consume calls if they invoke the server as separate tool calls. Keep requests focused, avoid repeatedly fetching the same material without need, and design your application to handle a limit response gracefully. The documented figure is per user, not a promise of 100 calls per application or per individual client.

What to build with it

Stack Overflow presents the public MCP service for uses including assistants that retrieve answers at runtime, retrieval-augmented generation tools, developer extensions, chatbots, learning tools, and dashboards or research tools for exploring developer trends. These are suggested use cases, not a guarantee that a particular client integration or result quality has been independently validated.

For an assistant, a sensible pattern is to search for a narrowly framed question, retrieve the most relevant post by ID, and show users enough context to inspect the underlying discussion. For a trend dashboard, remember that the documented search tool is lexical question search; the material reviewed here does not establish an analytics API, bulk-export facility, or special trend-analysis tool.

Public Stack Overflow MCP is not Stack Internal Community MCP

This guide covers the public service at mcp.stackoverflow.com. Stack Internal Community MCP is a separate service for an organization’s Stack Internal Community; its endpoint is tenant-specific, for example https://[your_site].stackenterprise.co/mcp. Its administrator enablement, OAuth 2.0 with PKCE workflow, and documented read/write tools should not be applied to the public Stack Overflow server. The two services have different endpoints and setup flows.

The public setup documentation describes account-based authentication and user consent, but does not provide a detailed security architecture in the material covered here. Do not infer details about tenant hosting, request logs, or token handling from documentation for the separate enterprise product.

Troubleshooting connection and usage problems

The client does not show the Stack Overflow tools

  • Check that the JSON parses and that the entry is nested under mcpServers.
  • Verify the command is npx and the arguments are exactly mcp-remote and mcp.stackoverflow.com.
  • Quit and reopen the MCP client after saving the configuration and after completing authorization. A client that has not reloaded the configuration may still be using its previous server list.
  • Check the client’s connection or server logs for a command launch error. If it cannot find or run npx, resolve that environment issue first.

The login or consent flow does not complete

  • Follow the Stack Exchange login prompt and complete both authorization and terms acceptance. Logging in alone is not the same as granting consent.
  • If the flow was interrupted, reconnect from the client and complete the authorization steps again. The public documentation describes this account-and-consent flow, not an administrator-issued enterprise credential.
  • Do not substitute the tenant-specific Stack Internal Community endpoint for the public endpoint.

A search or retrieval request fails

  • Inspect the tool description in the MCP client and ensure the request uses the arguments it actually exposes; the official material summarized here does not give a full argument schema.
  • For get_content, verify that the ID is the one returned or identified for the intended question, answer, or comment.
  • If requests stop working after repeated use, consider the documented daily per-user limit and check the official page for the current limit or instructions for higher-volume use.
  • If the connection is established but returned material is not useful, narrow the search wording and inspect retrieved content rather than treating the first lexical match as a definitive answer.

Or skip the browser setup

ScreenshotNeo is not a Stack Overflow MCP connector and does not replace the setup above. It is a separate website screenshot API and MCP server for developers; it can be useful when an agent also needs to capture a web page as an image or PDF. Its MCP tools include take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf. A direct screenshot request looks like this:

curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stackoverflow.com -o shot.webp

See the ScreenshotNeo documentation for setup and request options. Cookie and consent banners are accepted before capture and more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets are removed; each step can be turned off. Bot checks, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits cost nothing, with the page verdict and billing status returned in response headers. An MCP server lets AI agents use its screenshot and page-info tools. The free plan includes 1,000 screenshots per month with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 shots. Sign up for 1,000 free screenshots a month, with no card required.

Practical limits to keep in mind

The public MCP documentation establishes a remote connection flow, two named tools, and a daily per-user call limit. It does not, in the material described here, publish a complete tool schema, detailed security architecture, or a guaranteed result format. Confirm the live client tool descriptions and current official guidance when implementing a production integration, especially if your application depends on exact parameters or high request volume.
