Fastest Android method: say “Hey Google, be my [language] interpreter.” If Gemini opens, switch the phone’s primary assistant to Google Assistant first. For an app-based shortcut—or on iPhone—open Google Translate and tap Conversation.
What Interpreter mode does
Google Assistant’s Interpreter mode is designed for turn-by-turn, face-to-face conversations. It listens to one speaker, translates, and then lets the other speaker respond. You can also type instead of speaking and select languages manually. Google introduced the feature for Assistant, not as a universal home-screen app.
Do not confuse it with other translation tools:
- Conversation mode: conversational translation inside the Google Translate app.
- Transcribe: continuous translation of longer spoken passages such as lectures.
- Camera or Lens translation: signs, menus, labels, and other visible text.
- Circle to Search translation: text displayed on a compatible Android screen.
Interpreter mode provides conversational assistance, not guaranteed simultaneous or perfectly accurate translation.
The fastest way to start Interpreter mode on Android
- Make sure Google Assistant is the phone’s active mobile assistant.
- Say “Hey Google”, or use your phone’s assistant gesture or button.
- Say one of these commands: “Be my Spanish interpreter,” “Help me speak French,” or “Be my Thai interpreter.” Google documents these command forms in its Assistant guidance: Google’s Interpreter mode announcement.
- When the interface appears, confirm or choose the two conversation languages.
- Place the phone between the speakers and take turns when prompted.
- Use the keyboard or language selector if speech recognition is unreliable or the setting must remain quiet.
“Interpret from [language] to [language]” can be a fallback, but the “be my” and “help me speak” commands are Google’s documented examples.

If Gemini opens instead
Google’s current Gemini mobile documentation says Interpreter mode is not supported directly in Gemini. It instructs users to switch to Google Assistant: Gemini feature compatibility.
Switch in the Gemini app
- Open Gemini.
- Tap your profile picture or initial.
- Tap Switch to Google Assistant.
- Select Google Assistant.
- Tap Switch to confirm.
Afterward, “Hey Google” and the phone’s touch-based assistant activation invoke Google Assistant again. Switching assistants does not uninstall Gemini; it changes which assistant handles the primary assistant gesture and voice requests. Menu wording can vary by Android version, region, account type, or app release.
Use Android Settings instead
- Open Settings.
- Tap Apps, then Assistant.
- Tap Digital assistants from Google.
- Choose Google Assistant.
Manufacturer software may place these controls under a slightly different label. Google’s switch instructions are at Switch between Gemini and Google Assistant.
What “shortcut” can mean
Voice shortcut
The phrase “Hey Google, be my [language] interpreter” is the most direct hands-free shortcut.

Assistant gesture or button
Use the phone’s configured assistant gesture, navigation-bar action, or hardware button, then issue the same command. The exact gesture differs by manufacturer and navigation mode.
Google Translate app icon
There is no confirmed universal Interpreter mode home-screen icon for every Android phone. A dependable app shortcut is to place Google Translate on the home screen and open its Conversation feature instead. Any dedicated Interpreter shortcut exposed by a particular launcher, device, or app version is device-dependent.

Use Google Translate Conversation mode instead
Conversation mode is the practical alternative when Gemini is active, when you do not want to change assistants, or when you use an iPhone. Google lists Conversation mode alongside voice input, offline language downloads, camera translation, and transcription on its official feature page: Google Translate.
- Open the Google Translate app on Android or iPhone.
- Select the two languages.
- Tap Conversation.
- Place the phone between both speakers, or hand it back and forth.
- Tap the microphone for the appropriate language when automatic listening does not identify the speaker correctly.
- Switch to text input when speech recognition fails.
Download languages in advance if you expect poor connectivity. Offline support varies by language and feature, so check the download option in the app before traveling; do not assume Interpreter mode itself works offline.
Other Google translation shortcuts
Pixel Live Translate
Google documents Live Translate on Pixel 6 and later, including Pixel Fold and Pixel Tablet models, subject to language and feature limits. It handles supported live text conversations and videos, rather than launching Assistant Interpreter mode. Details are in Google’s Pixel translation guide.
Circle to Search
On a compatible Pixel, hold the Home button or navigation bar, tap Translate, then Scroll and translate for supported on-screen content. This is for webpages, posts, captions, and other displayed text.
Google Lens
Use Lens to translate signs, menus, labels, and text in images. It is not a two-person speaking interface.
Pixel Fold Dual Screen
On supported Pixel Fold hardware, open Google Translate, choose Conversation, select Face to face, then Dual Screen to show each speaker a translation on a separate display. This is a Google Translate feature, not a requirement for Interpreter mode.

Fix common launch and recognition problems
“Hey Google” does nothing
- Check Google Assistant or Gemini voice-activation settings.
- Verify microphone permission and Voice Match.
- Check the assistant language and whether lock-screen access is enabled.
- Confirm that the phone has an internet connection.
- Consider supervised, school-managed, or employer-managed accounts, which can restrict assistant features.
Google notes that “Hey Google,” Voice Match, and some assistant functions are not available in every language, country, or account configuration: availability information.
The assistant misunderstands the command
Try the shorter forms “Be my French interpreter” or “Help me speak Japanese.” If Assistant returns an ordinary translation instead of the interpreter interface, open Google Assistant first and repeat the command.
The wrong language is detected
- Select input and output languages manually.
- Ask speakers to pause between sentences.
- Move away from traffic, music, and crowds.
- Use short, complete sentences instead of slang or fragments.
- Type the sentence when speech recognition continues to fail.
You cannot switch back to Assistant
Use Settings → Apps → Assistant → Digital assistants from Google → Google Assistant. Labels can differ on manufacturer-customized Android releases.
Accuracy, privacy, and safety limits
Speech recognition and translation can fail with names, dialects, slang, background noise, rapid speech, or ambiguous wording. Check names, numbers, dates, addresses, dosage, and directions aloud or in writing.
