How to Use Stickers Like Emojis in iOS 18 on iPhone and iPad

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

On iPhone and iPad with iOS 18 or iPadOS 18, you can open stickers from the emoji keyboard and insert them into a text message alongside words, much like emoji. That does not convert a standard Unicode emoji into a custom sticker file: Live Stickers, Memoji stickers, and Genmoji are separate kinds of content. Genmoji arrived with iOS 18.2 and iPadOS 18.2, and requires Apple Intelligence on a compatible device.

What counts as an emoji sticker in iOS 18?

The keyboard brings several kinds of visual items together, but they are not interchangeable:

  • Standard emoji are Unicode characters supported by the operating system and apps.
  • Live Stickers are made from subjects in photos, typically isolated from the background.
  • Memoji stickers show a character you customize, in a selection of expressions and poses.
  • Genmoji are custom emoji generated with Apple Intelligence. They can also be shared as stickers or used as Tapbacks where supported.

So if by “emoji as stickers” you mean putting a sticker in the same text flow as an emoji, use the keyboard’s Stickers section. There is no general command to turn any ordinary emoji character into a separate sticker asset. Apple’s iPhone guide to emoji, Memoji, and stickers describes how to access and manage them.

How to insert a sticker inline like an emoji

  1. Open a text field in Messages or another app that supports the emoji and sticker keyboard.
  2. Tap the Emoji button, or tap the globe/Next Keyboard key until the emoji keyboard appears.
  3. Tap the Stickers category, then choose a sticker. Recently used emoji, Memoji, and stickers may also appear under Frequently Used.
  4. Send the message normally.

In Messages, a sticker inserted while composing text sits in the message’s text flow, generally at the end of the text you have entered. To send a larger, standalone sticker instead, open the conversation, tap the plus or Apps button beside the message field, choose Stickers, select one, and send it without ordinary text in that message. The presentation differs depending on whether the sticker is part of a text message or sent separately. The inline behavior is also described in MacRumors’ iOS 18 Messages guide.

Apple’s instructions apply to supported apps; the keyboard and insertion behavior are not identical everywhere. Messages is a straightforward place to try it. In a document or another app, check whether the emoji keyboard and sticker category are available.

How to make a Live Sticker from a photo

Live Stickers are the right choice when you want to use a person, pet, or object from your own photo library rather than invent an image with a prompt. In a supported app:

  1. Tap a text field and open the emoji keyboard.
  2. Tap Stickers, then tap Add Stickers.
  3. Search or browse the photo library, including categories such as People or Animals.
  4. Choose a photo, then tap Add Sticker.

The sticker is added to your collection for later use from the keyboard. Results depend on the image and the system’s ability to identify a subject; this is a photo-based sticker, not a Genmoji. The Apple keyboard guide documents this route and qualifies it for supported apps.

How to use or create Memoji stickers

Use an existing Memoji

  1. Tap a text field and open the emoji keyboard.
  2. Tap the Memoji category and browse characters and expressions.
  3. Tap a Memoji to insert it inline. In Messages, use the plus or Apps button and open Stickers if you want to send a larger standalone sticker.

Create or manage a Memoji

  1. Open the emoji keyboard and tap Memoji.
  2. Tap Add to create a character, or tap More to edit, duplicate, delete, or create another.
  3. Customize the appearance, then tap Done.

The new or updated character becomes available in the Memoji collection. Memoji is a customizable avatar with preset poses and expressions; it does not require Apple Intelligence or generate an arbitrary image from a text prompt. Apple lists the keyboard controls in its emoji and sticker instructions.

How to create Genmoji on iPhone or iPad

Genmoji requires iOS 18.2 or later, or iPadOS 18.2 or later, plus Apple Intelligence availability on the particular device, language, and region. It was not included as a generally available feature in the initial iOS 18.0 release. Apple’s Genmoji guide explains creation and use; its iPhone compatibility list names all iPhone 16 models, iPhone 15 Pro, and iPhone 15 Pro Max. For iPad, verify the exact model against Apple’s Apple Intelligence requirements rather than assuming every iPad running iPadOS 18 qualifies.

  1. Tap a text field and open the emoji keyboard.
  2. Tap Genmoji near the top-right of the keyboard.
  3. Describe what you want, such as “rainbow cactus” or “cat wearing sunglasses.” Edit the description to refine the result.
  4. Tap Done, swipe through the generated variations, then tap Add on the one you want.

You can also create a Genmoji based on a person identified in Photos: enter the person’s name and a description, choose Choose a Person, select the person, and pick a variation. A Genmoji can be inserted inline, shared as a sticker, or used as a Tapback where supported. Generated results can vary, so check that an image is appropriate and accurately represents the subject before sharing it. See Apple’s video introducing Genmoji on supported devices.

Why the Stickers or Genmoji control may be missing

If you cannot find a control, first identify which feature is missing. Stickers, photo sticker creation, and Genmoji have different requirements.

  • For Genmoji, check the software version. The device needs iOS 18.2 or later, or iPadOS 18.2 or later.
  • Check the exact hardware. Apple Intelligence does not work on every iPhone or iPad that can run iOS 18 or iPadOS 18. On iPhone, Apple lists all iPhone 16 models and iPhone 15 Pro and Pro Max in its guide; check Apple’s requirements for the specific iPad.
  • Check Apple Intelligence settings and availability. Turn Apple Intelligence on if it is available for the device. Apple notes that availability varies by language and region, and the device and Siri language may need to be compatible.
  • Open the right keyboard in an actual text field. Tap Emoji or the Next Keyboard key, then look for the relevant category. Keyboard layout, language, orientation, and software build can affect icon placement.
  • Check the app. Sticker controls and creation steps are app-dependent. Try Messages, and do not assume a feature appears in every text-entry app.
  • If you have just enabled a feature, allow setup or downloads to finish and restart the device if the control still has not appeared. If it remains missing, distinguish an unsupported device, language, or region from a temporary software issue; update to the latest compatible release and consult Apple’s current guidance.

Apple’s Apple Intelligence and Genmoji information documents the hardware and availability limits. A missing Genmoji button on an older device is not fixed by changing the ordinary emoji keyboard.

What recipients see on other devices

Display depends on the recipient’s operating system and app. On newer Apple systems that support the inline behavior, stickers and Memoji can appear in the text flow. On earlier Apple operating systems, they may instead display as separate images. Genmoji sent to non-Apple devices may be rendered as an image rather than as an inline emoji, and third-party apps may not support Genmoji creation or the same inline presentation. Compatibility details are covered by MacRumors’ iOS 18 Messages overview and its Genmoji guide.
