Yes—you can play SteamVR games on an Oculus (Meta) Quest 2. Steam and the game run on a compatible Windows PC; the Quest 2 acts as the VR display and controller system. Connect it with Steam Link (the simplest wireless route), a USB Meta Quest Link cable, Air Link, Virtual Desktop, or ALVR.
What you need
- Meta Quest 2 with charged controllers.
- A Windows PC powerful enough for the specific SteamVR game.
- A Steam account, the Steam desktop client, and SteamVR.
- A VR-capable game purchased on Steam.
- For wireless play: the PC and headset on the same network, preferably with the PC connected to the router by Ethernet and the Quest 2 on nearby 5 GHz Wi-Fi.
- For wired play: a USB-C cable that supports data (not charging only) and a suitable USB port.
Valve lists Windows 10 or newer, 5 GHz Wi-Fi for the headset, a wired PC-to-router connection, and approximately a GTX 970-class NVIDIA GPU as Steam Link minimum guidance. The SteamVR store page also lists an older GTX 970/Radeon R9 290 baseline. These are compatibility baselines, not a promise that every modern game will run well; check each game’s requirements.
Understand what runs where
SteamVR is Valve’s PC runtime and VR environment. Steam Link is a streaming app that transports the PC’s rendered frames to the Quest 2. The PC runs Steam, SteamVR, and the game; the Quest 2 runs its headset interface and displays the streamed result.
A Steam purchase does not include the standalone Quest version. A Quest-store purchase does not automatically include the Steam version. Meta PC/Rift availability and Meta cross-buy are separate, game-specific policies.

The easiest wireless method: Steam Link
Prepare the PC
- Update or install Steam.
- Install SteamVR.
- Start Steam, then start SteamVR once so required components finish installing.
- Connect the PC to the router by Ethernet if possible.
- Pause large downloads, cloud synchronization, VPNs, and video streams.
Pair the Quest 2
- Put on the headset and open the Meta Quest store.
- Search for Steam Link and install the free app (verify the current listing).
- Open Steam Link and let it scan for computers.
- Select the PC running Steam. Enter the pairing code on the PC if requested.
- Complete the connection test, then launch a game from the Steam Link interface or SteamVR dashboard.
You should see the Steam Link/SteamVR environment in the headset and SteamVR should show the Quest as connected. Steam Link is a wireless VR client; it is not a USB display mode. Valve recommends a 5 GHz headset connection and a wired PC-to-router link. Wi-Fi 6 or 6E can help in busy environments but is not mandatory.
Use a USB Quest Link cable
- Install Meta’s current Quest PC software and sign in with the account used by the headset.
- Connect the Quest 2 with a USB-C data cable. A charging-only cable will not work for PC VR.
- Accept the USB connection prompts in the headset.
- Enter the PC Link environment using the current labels shown by Meta’s software.
- Start Steam and SteamVR on the PC, then launch the Steam VR game.
Wired Link avoids most wireless interference and usually gives steadier latency, but cable movement, USB controller quality, port compatibility, and strain can cause disconnects. Image quality still depends on the PC’s GPU, encoder, and Link settings.

Use Meta Air Link
- Install and sign in to Meta’s Quest PC software.
- Enable Air Link in the PC software and headset settings (labels can change).
- Put the PC and Quest 2 on the same local network; use Ethernet for the PC and nearby 5 GHz Wi-Fi for the headset.
- Select the PC in the Air Link pairing screen and enter a code if shown.
- Enter the PC VR environment, open SteamVR, and start the game.
Air Link is useful if you already use Meta’s PC VR layer. It adds that layer before SteamVR, so Steam Link may be simpler for a Steam-first setup.

Virtual Desktop
Virtual Desktop is a paid Quest app paired with a free PC Streamer from the vendor’s website.
- Buy and install Virtual Desktop on Quest 2.
- Download and install Virtual Desktop Streamer on the PC.
- Enter the requested Meta username in the streamer.
- Open Virtual Desktop on the headset and select the PC.
- Use its Games tab or launch SteamVR, then start the Steam title.
It offers more streaming controls and desktop features than basic platform tools and can work well on a clean network. It also adds software and settings to manage, and current pricing and supported modes should be checked on the live store page. Do not assume it is universally better. Some games have specific OpenXR or launch-path requirements.
ALVR for advanced users
ALVR is a free, open-source streamer supporting Quest headsets and supported NVIDIA NVENC, AMD AMF/VCE, or Intel VPL hardware encoders.

- Install SteamVR and launch it once.
- Install the ALVR PC streamer and the current Quest client using the project’s installation guide.
- Run the setup wizard and allow firewall access.
- Pair the headset, start SteamVR through ALVR, and launch the game.
ALVR also documents a native USB mode: enable Wired Connection on its Devices screen, connect the Quest, and accept USB debugging. That mode requires Developer Mode and USB debugging and is considerably more complex than ordinary Quest Link.

- Use Ethernet from PC to router; keep the headset on the router’s 5 GHz band.
- Avoid guest networks, client isolation, weak mesh-node links, and distant access points.
- Pause other high-bandwidth traffic. A dedicated access point can help a busy household network.
- Start with conservative SteamVR resolution and a stable refresh rate. Raise resolution, bitrate, or refresh rate one setting at a time.
- Watch dropped frames, encoder latency, and network latency. Lower resolution or bitrate if the GPU/encoder or network is overloaded.
- Use USB Link as a diagnostic: if wired play is smooth but wireless is not, the network is the likely bottleneck.
There is no universal best bitrate, latency, resolution, or frame rate. Results vary with the GPU encoder, game, codec, refresh rate, router, interference, USB controller, distance, and obstructions.

SteamVR, OpenXR, and launch problems
SteamVR is the PC compositor; OpenXR is a runtime selected by OpenXR applications. Meta Link, Steam Link, Virtual Desktop, and ALVR can use different runtime paths. First establish a working connection, start the intended platform layer, open SteamVR, and launch from the VR interface. Change the OpenXR runtime only when a particular game fails to display or launches in the wrong environment, and restore the previous choice if other applications break. Community guidance for Air Link and Virtual Desktop is method-specific, not a universal rule.

For most first-time users, try Steam Link with an Ethernet-connected PC and strong 5 GHz Wi-Fi. Choose USB Link when wireless quality is unreliable, Air Link when you prefer Meta’s PC environment, Virtual Desktop for extra controls, and ALVR for open-source experimentation or advanced configuration.
