A signed image URL gives access to a private image to whoever holds the link, but only within the limits set by its signature and expiry. To use one safely, keep the image private at its origin, authenticate and authorize the viewer on your server before signing, restrict the link to the exact resource and a suitable lifetime, serve it over HTTPS, and test the CDN and origin paths that can reach the image.
What a signed image URL does—and does not do
A signed URL is a URL with a cryptographic signature and policy data that the storage service or CDN checks when the request arrives. If the signature is valid and the request meets the policy, the service returns the resource. The application that creates the URL should make the access decision first; a valid signature is not a substitute for checking that the requester is entitled to the image. AWS describes this sequence for CloudFront: the application checks authorization and issues a URL, then CloudFront validates the URL’s signature and policy. AWS CloudFront signed URL workflow.
Do not treat the URL as secret merely because it is difficult to guess. It is a bearer credential: anyone who obtains a usable copy may be able to fetch the image until expiry or another applicable invalidation. Google Cloud Storage explicitly notes that anyone who knows a signed URL can access the resource until the URL expires or the signing key is rotated. Google Cloud Storage signed URL access.
Secure implementation: authorize, sign, deliver, and verify
1. Keep the origin private
Store the image in a private bucket or otherwise deny unauthenticated direct access. If CloudFront is the delivery layer for an S3 origin, restrict the origin so viewers must go through the intended distribution instead of bypassing its access controls with a direct S3 URL. AWS covers origin restrictions in its CloudFront private content overview. A signed CDN URL does not protect an image if a separate public origin URL can still serve it.

2. Authenticate and authorize before creating the URL
In trusted server-side code, authenticate the current user and check permission for the specific image or object. Then call the provider’s supported signing mechanism using credentials or private keys that remain on the server. Never send signing keys, cloud credentials, or code that can mint unrestricted URLs to a browser or mobile client. Scope access to the intended object; do not let an untrusted caller supply an arbitrary object path to a signing endpoint without an authorization check.
3. Set a narrow resource scope and appropriate expiry
Sign the exact image URL or object and choose a validity window that fits the viewing flow. There is no universally correct duration: account for page load, image transformations, retry behavior, and any delay before the viewer opens the page. Shorter validity reduces the window in which a leaked link can be reused, but a link that expires during a legitimate retry may break the image. Test the chosen value for the actual client and provider.
Provider mechanics differ. An Amazon S3 presigned URL inherits the permissions of the credentials used to create it and may stop working before its requested expiry if temporary credentials expire, are revoked, deleted, or deactivated. The S3 SDK/CLI can configure a duration of up to seven days, but that is a maximum configuration limit, not a security recommendation or guarantee that a URL will remain valid that long. Amazon S3 presigned URL duration and expiry.
4. Use HTTPS and protect the link in your application
Serve signed URLs only over HTTPS. Google Cloud CDN recommends signing only HTTPS URLs so the signature component is not exposed in transit. Google Cloud CDN signed URLs. Also avoid placing signed URLs in analytics events, public logs, support tickets, or referrer-bearing links where possible. Restrict access to logs that must contain them, and avoid copying them into public issue trackers or chat rooms.

5. Sign the final URL, not a draft of it
Generate the signature for the URL and policy that will actually be requested, including any required query parameters. AWS warns that adding query parameters after signing a CloudFront URL can result in HTTP 403. If your image service adds transformation parameters, determine whether those parameters must be present in the signed URL or covered by the provider’s policy. Do not edit, reorder, append, or remove signed components unless the provider explicitly permits it. CloudFront signed URL rules.
6. Check cache behavior and all access paths
CDN caching and authorization are related but distinct. Confirm how the CDN keys and serves signed requests, and do not assume origin cache headers alone define the behavior. Google Cloud CDN documents that it caches signed requests regardless of the backend’s Cache-Control header. Review its signed URL cache behavior and configure and test the behavior appropriate to the privacy requirement. Also verify that direct origin access is blocked, rather than relying on the CDN URL policy alone.
How long should a signed image URL last?
Choose the shortest window that still works for the intended viewer experience, then test real page loads, image retries, and transformations. A URL distributed in a page may be requested after initial rendering, and a client retry after the authorization window can fail even if an earlier request succeeded.
For Amazon S3, the requested expiry is not always the effective expiry: temporary credentials can expire sooner or be invalidated. For S3 and CloudFront, expiry is checked when a request starts. A transfer that began before expiry can finish, but a retry that begins after expiry can fail. S3 presigned URL expiry and CloudFront expiry checks.

CloudFront custom policies can include an optional not-before time and an IP address or range restriction as well as expiry. These controls are provider-specific and can make legitimate access fail if the viewer’s network or timing does not match. Review CloudFront custom policy options before depending on them. AWS documents RSA 2048 and ECDSA 256 signatures for CloudFront signed URLs; these are CloudFront implementation details, not universal signed-URL requirements. CloudFront signed URLs.
Signed URLs or signed cookies?
For CloudFront, AWS recommends signed URLs for individual files and signed cookies when access covers multiple restricted files, such as video segments, or when existing URLs should remain unchanged. This is CloudFront guidance; check equivalent behavior for another provider. CloudFront signed URL versus cookie guidance.
| Design question | Signed URL | Signed cookie |
|---|---|---|
| How many resources? | Useful for granting access to one image or individual files. | Useful when a viewer needs several restricted files. |
| How is access conveyed? | Possession of the URL grants access within its policy and validity. | The browser or client must handle the required cookies. |
| Do resource URLs need to change? | The protected URL carries the signed access information. | Can be a fit when keeping existing resource URLs unchanged matters. |
| Provider behavior | CloudFront gives signed URLs precedence if both mechanisms apply to the same request; confirm behavior for other providers. Source: AWS comparison. | |
Compare the mechanisms against resource scope, client cookie support, URL and query handling, expiry and revocation, origin protection, CDN cache behavior, and retry or transformation requirements. A cookie is not automatically safer; both approaches require a sound authorization decision and careful expiry and distribution.
Provider notes: AWS and Google Cloud
Amazon S3 presigned URLs and CloudFront signed URLs
S3 presigned URLs grant access using the permissions of the credentials that signed them and are reusable until effective expiry. CloudFront signed URLs use a canned or custom policy; custom policies can add not-before and IP-range conditions. When serving through CloudFront from S3, restrict the bucket origin so users cannot bypass the distribution. Consult the current S3 presigned URL guide, CloudFront signed URL guide, and CloudFront private content overview for provider-specific configuration.

Google Cloud Storage and Cloud CDN
Google Cloud Storage signed URLs are usable by anyone who knows the URL until expiry or signing-key rotation. Google Cloud CDN recommends HTTPS and states that signed requests are cached regardless of backend Cache-Control. These mechanics are not interchangeable with AWS signing rules: follow Google’s canonical request, signing, and cache guidance for the service in use. Cloud Storage signed URLs and Cloud CDN signed URLs.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Verification checklist before release
- Confirm the image is not publicly readable at the origin or through an alternate URL.
- Confirm an authenticated but unauthorized user cannot obtain a signed link.
- Confirm a valid URL succeeds and an expired URL is denied.
- Alter or remove a signed query parameter and confirm the provider rejects the request.
- Test a legitimate retry near expiry and any range or transformation requests your application uses.
- Check CDN cache behavior and ensure it matches the privacy expectation.
- Review logs and analytics for accidental exposure of complete signed URLs.
Troubleshooting common failures
HTTP 403 or signature mismatch
Check whether the URL changed after signing, especially query parameters, encoding, path, or host. For CloudFront, adding query parameters after signature generation can cause a 403. Recreate the signed URL from the exact final request rather than patching it in the browser.
The link expires earlier than expected
For S3, check whether the signing credentials are temporary and expire before the requested URL duration, or whether they were revoked or deactivated. Check the actual request start time: a retry after URL expiry may fail even when the first transfer started before expiry. Create a fresh URL only after repeating the viewer authorization check.
The image loads for some users but not others
Review client cookie support if using signed cookies, and verify that an IP restriction or not-before condition is not excluding the viewer. Check clock and expiry assumptions, the exact URL delivered to each client, and whether a proxy or transformation service changes the signed request.

The private image remains reachable without the signed link
Test the origin URL and alternate hostnames directly. If a public S3 object or other open origin path remains, the CDN authorization is not protecting that path. Restrict origin access and retest both the allowed CDN route and the denied direct route.
Cache behavior does not match origin headers
Check the provider’s signed-request cache rules instead of assuming the backend Cache-Control directive controls delivery. Google Cloud CDN, for example, caches signed requests regardless of that backend header. Validate the configured cache key and serving behavior for the actual CDN.
Or skip the browser setup
If your goal is to capture an image of a public page rather than securely grant access to a private image, ScreenshotNeo offers a screenshot API and MCP server. This is not a replacement for storage authorization or signed URLs; it is a way to request a webpage capture. A single GET request returns an image or PDF. See the ScreenshotNeo API documentation for parameters and setup.

Bot checks, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits are not billed, with response headers identifying the page verdict and billing status. Its MCP server provides tools for AI agents, including Claude, Cursor, and other MCP clients. Frequently asked questions
Can a signed URL be revoked before it expires?
That depends on the provider and signing credentials. Google Cloud Storage documents signing-key rotation as a way a URL can cease to work; S3 URLs can also stop working when the underlying credentials expire or are revoked. Check your provider’s invalidation and key-rotation behavior before promising immediate revocation.
Is a signed URL encrypted?
The signature is an integrity and authorization mechanism, not a reason to send the URL over plain HTTP. Use HTTPS to protect it in transit.
