The Galaxy S21 Camera app can handle everyday photos, portraits, night scenes, action video and manual shooting—but the best controls depend on which S21 you own and which One UI version it runs. The S21 and S21+ share a 12MP main, 12MP ultrawide and 64MP telephoto setup; the S21 Ultra has a different camera system, including dedicated 3× and 10× telephoto cameras. Start by checking Settings → About phone → Model name if you are unsure. Menus and feature availability can vary by model, region and software version, so look under More when a mode is not on the main camera strip.
Get familiar with the Camera screen
Open Camera. On the main screen, tap your subject to focus; a brightness control usually appears beside the focus point so you can raise or lower exposure. Tap a lens or zoom value—often 0.5×, 1× and, depending on model and conditions, a telephoto option—or pinch to zoom between steps. Swipe up or down to switch between the front and rear cameras. Swipe left or right across the mode names to change modes. Tap the shutter for a photo or the record button for video, then open Gallery to review your capture.
Samsung documents these basic controls in its Galaxy S21 manual and support page. On updated software, a control may instead appear in a quick-control strip or under Camera settings. Clean the lenses before diagnosing soft images, hold the phone with both hands for zoom and low-light shots, and use the volume keys as a shutter if that makes the phone steadier.
Choose a mode for the situation

Use Photo mode for everyday pictures
Photo is the automatic starting mode. Choose the view, tap the subject, adjust brightness if needed and hold still as you take the shot. Use the ultrawide view for a building, interior or large group; the main camera is the best general-purpose starting point; a telephoto step can help frame a distant subject or photograph a person from farther away.

Depending on the software build, Photo mode may offer Scene Optimizer, Motion Photo, filters, timer, flash and aspect-ratio controls. Scene Optimizer lets the phone identify a scene and adjust processing; Motion Photo records a short moving moment around a still; filters preview a look before capture. The timer is useful for group photos or a phone on a support. Flash is usually best left off unless a nearby subject genuinely needs it, since it can create harsh light. A narrower aspect ratio such as 16:9 crops the image compared with a taller sensor view, so choose it for the intended framing rather than assuming it adds detail.
Turn on grid lines or a level if available to keep horizons and architecture straight. Keep people away from the extreme edges of ultrawide frames: perspective distortion is stronger there. For a sunset or backlit subject, tap the area that matters and adjust exposure rather than accepting a bright sky or a washed-out face.
Pick a lens and use zoom realistically
The S21 and S21+ offer up to 30× Space Zoom; the S21 Ultra offers up to 100× and has separate 3× and 10× telephoto cameras. These maximum figures are not equivalent to optical detail at every magnification: processing and digital cropping become increasingly important at high zoom, and small hand movements become obvious. Samsung lists the model differences in its S21 series specifications.

- Main camera: Use for general photos and as a sensible first choice in low light.
- Telephoto: Use for distant details, performances or portraits from a comfortable distance. It may not focus well on a very close subject.
Prefer the named lens steps over extreme pinch zoom, and move closer when it is practical. The phone can switch cameras automatically according to distance, light or focus; in poor light it may favor the main camera and crop rather than use a darker telephoto lens. If you need high magnification, brace the phone against a solid surface or use a tripod. Treat the highest zoom as a framing aid, not a guarantee of fine detail.
Take a Portrait photo
Open Portrait, place the subject within the on-screen distance guidance, choose a background effect and adjust its strength if offered. Tap the shutter. Even, reasonably bright light and some space between subject and background generally help the effect look more convincing.

Busy backgrounds, motion and fine boundaries—hair, glasses, fingers or transparent objects—can confuse subject separation. Keep clutter away from directly behind the subject and review the result in Gallery; some builds let you adjust portrait effects afterward. Samsung said the S21 portrait processing used improved 3D analysis for subject separation, a manufacturer description rather than an independent performance measurement. Use Night mode when light is low
Open Camera → More → Night, frame the scene, tap the shutter and keep the phone still while the capture and processing complete. Night mode is designed to work without flash, but it still needs some available light; it cannot guarantee a clean, bright image in complete darkness. Night photos can blur or show ghosting when people, cars or the phone move. Brace the phone, ask subjects to pause, or use brighter light and a shorter exposure if the controls permit. If highlights are blown out, tap a bright area and lower exposure. Mixed indoor lighting can shift colors; Pro mode may give more predictable white balance when color accuracy matters. If Night is missing, check that you are not in a setting combination that disables it and look under More.
Capture options with Single Take
Choose Single Take, frame the action before starting, then tap the shutter and let the phone capture for the duration offered on screen. Open the resulting item in Gallery to review generated photos and video clips; save or share the useful results and remove the rest. It suits children, pets, sports, celebrations and travel moments when you are not sure whether a still or clip will work best.
Single Take creates more material than one photograph, and its automatic picks are suggestions rather than guaranteed best shots. Check storage before a long session. Samsung’s original S21 material describes multiple formats from one press and an implementation of up to 15 seconds; the duration and interface may differ on later software. Record video, use stabilization and try 8K Snap
Swipe to Video, choose a resolution and frame rate, select a lens if available, tap record and tap stop when finished. Higher resolution preserves more detail but increases file size; higher frame rates are useful for motion but generally need more light and storage. Stabilization can help handheld footage but may crop the frame. Options such as HDR and audio controls depend on the chosen resolution, lens and software version. Test the sound before an important recording: directional or audio-zoom features can emphasize unwanted background noise as well as a subject.

Super Steady is intended for handheld movement. In Video, tap the stabilization control if shown, then record. It can crop the image, usually benefits from good light and cannot eliminate distortion from fast pans or replace a gimbal for demanding movement. Some combinations of resolution, frame rate, HDR and lens may disable it. Samsung promoted improved Super Steady for the S21 series, but do not assume every software build supports the same mode combination.
8K Snap lets you extract a still from 8K footage, which can help when timing a separate photo is difficult. It is not necessarily equivalent to a native still from the best photo camera, and 8K video consumes substantial storage and can contribute to heat. Choose it for a specific need, not as the default. Samsung introduced both features in its S21 camera announcement.
Record with Director’s View or Vlogger View
Look in Camera → More → Director’s View if available. Choose a layout or camera arrangement, start recording, then use the on-screen controls to switch views or select a lens. The S21 generation also promoted front-and-rear recording, Vlogger View and Live Thumbnails; exact names and layouts can vary by model and One UI version. Samsung’s current camera support guide describes Director’s View features such as switching rear-camera lenses and subject lock.
This is useful for tutorials, reactions and commentary, but simultaneous or multi-camera recording can increase file size, battery use and heat. It is not the best choice when maximum image quality or the simplest recording workflow matters.

Take manual control with Pro and Pro Video
In Camera → More → Pro, choose the lens and adjust the controls shown. Samsung documents ISO sensitivity, exposure value and white balance; some versions also expose shutter speed and focus. The available controls depend on software and shooting setup. Start with the lowest practical ISO for cleaner images, use a faster shutter for moving subjects, and use a slower shutter only with the phone supported. Set white balance manually under stable indoor light if automatic color shifts are distracting. Manual focus can help with a subject behind glass or a static low-light scene.
Pro mode is not automatically better: a slow shutter can blur movement, a fixed white balance can become wrong when the light changes, and manual exposure can lose highlights or shadows. RAW copies are useful when you intend to edit, but they take more space and need compatible software and workflow. Availability can vary by lens and build.
Pro Video provides manual options such as ISO, exposure value, white balance, color tone and microphone sound controls, depending on the phone and software. Lock white balance for a consistent indoor interview, use a tripod for a static scene, and test any external microphone before filming. Samsung’s original launch material described using Galaxy Buds Pro as a voice microphone in a particular tripod-based setup; do not assume that accessory behavior is supported on every current S21 configuration. - Slow motion: Use for movement you want to replay more slowly. Higher frame rates need more light and can create larger files.
- Super Slow-mo: Use for a brief, fast event such as a splash or jump. The capture window is short, so good light and timing matter.
- Hyperlapse: Compresses a changing scene or moving-camera sequence into a short time-lapse-style clip. Walk smoothly or support the phone; artificial lights may flicker.
- Panorama: Follow the on-screen direction slowly and keep the guide aligned. Moving subjects can create stitching artifacts.
- Food: Can emphasize color and close-up presentation, but may make colors look less accurate.
- Document scan: Detection and editing controls vary by One UI version. Check all edges and make sure text is sharp and evenly lit before relying on a scan.
Samsung’s mode guide covers the modes available across Galaxy devices; not every mode is present on every model or build.
Settings worth checking
- Enable grid lines or a level for straighter horizons.
- Use the timer on a tripod to avoid shake from tapping the shutter.
- Check video stabilization before handheld recording.
- Use HEIF or HEVC only if the apps and devices you share or edit with support those formats.
- Enable RAW only for photos you plan to edit.
- Review tracking autofocus or subject-tracking options if they appear on your build.
- Check available storage before Single Take, 8K or high-frame-rate recording.
- Keep the Camera app and phone software updated, but expect labels and menu locations to change.
Samsung warns that camera modes and settings differ by model. If a feature is absent, verify the model and build rather than assuming every S21 has identical controls.

Troubleshoot common camera problems
A mode is missing
Check Camera → More; some builds let you tap Add to place modes in the tray. A selected resolution, lens or recording mode may disable an option. Confirm the model at Settings → About phone, check for a software update and consult the manual for that model and region. If the mode layout seems corrupted, consider resetting Camera settings.
Photos look blurry
Clean the lens, tap the subject to focus and avoid excessive digital zoom. Subject movement, low light, a slow shutter, Night capture interrupted by movement, or a telephoto camera struggling to focus close up can all soften a result. Portrait processing can also misread fine edges. Try the main lens, improve the light, brace the phone and confirm the focus point is on the intended subject.
Night photos look artificial
Computational processing may brighten shadows, smooth detail or shift color. Lower exposure, steady the phone, try the main camera rather than a zoom lens, or use Pro for more consistent exposure and white balance. A different result is not necessarily a fault; Night mode is processing a difficult lighting scene.

8K, high-frame-rate video, simultaneous front/rear recording, hot surroundings and long processing sessions can increase heat. Stop recording, move into shade, temporarily remove a thick case and let the phone cool. For large files, lower resolution or frame rate, skip unnecessary 8K, delete unwanted Single Take clips and transfer media to a computer or cloud backup. Check free space before an important recording.
Controls changed after an update
One UI updates can move controls or change labels. Look in More, the quick-control strip and Camera settings, then use the manual associated with your exact model and region. Samsung’s update notes illustrate that camera controls can change with software updates.
