Claude Code acts as the MCP client, the server exposes browser actions as tools, and Puppeteer can power those actions underneath. Puppeteer code installed in your own JavaScript project does not, by itself, give Claude Code browser access. Puppeteer’s current documentation points to chrome-devtools-mcp for browser automation and debugging; the older @modelcontextprotocol/server-puppeteer package is deprecated and no longer supported.
Understand what each part does
There are three distinct pieces in this setup. Claude Code is the coding assistant and MCP client. MCP is the protocol through which Claude Code can connect to external tools. A browser-automation MCP server makes browser actions available as tools; Puppeteer may be the library that drives the browser behind those tools.
Puppeteer itself is a JavaScript library for controlling Chrome or Firefox through the DevTools Protocol or WebDriver BiDi. Its documentation says it runs headless by default. That makes Puppeteer useful in scripts and test suites, but using the library directly is a different integration pattern from giving Claude Code browser tools.
Choose direct Puppeteer code when browser automation belongs inside a JavaScript project, such as a repeatable test or utility. Choose an MCP server when you want Claude Code to navigate a page, inspect it, or perform browser actions during an interactive coding task. The exact actions Claude can perform depend on the tools exposed by the server you install.

Choose a maintained browser server
Puppeteer’s current documentation points to chrome-devtools-mcp, a Puppeteer-based MCP server for browser automation and debugging. Start with that project’s own current setup instructions and confirm its supported options for your operating system and Claude Code version before configuring it.
Do not start a new setup with @modelcontextprotocol/server-puppeteer. Its npm package page marks it deprecated and says it is no longer supported. Instructions written for that legacy package may not apply to the maintained server, so do not copy its package name, arguments, or configuration into a new installation.
The available source material does not establish a complete current install command or transport configuration for chrome-devtools-mcp. Rather than guess at a command or JSON block that could be stale, use the server’s own maintained installation guide for those exact values. The workflow below covers how to add and verify the server from Claude Code without assuming its launch details.
Connect the server to Claude Code
- Install the selected server and its browser dependencies. Follow the server’s current official instructions. Confirm whether it installs a browser automatically or expects one already present, and note any operating-system-specific requirements.
- Choose the narrowest useful configuration scope. Use local scope for an individual project-machine setup, project scope when the configuration should be shared with a project, or user scope for a user-wide setup. Project-level MCP servers configured through
.mcp.jsoncan require approval before use. - Add the server using its documented command or configuration. Use the exact package, arguments, and transport required by the selected server. Do not substitute settings copied from the deprecated Puppeteer MCP package.
- Reconnect if the server’s setup instructions require it. Then inspect the connection in Claude Code with
/mcp, or list configured servers from a terminal withclaude mcp list. - Try a harmless task. Ask Claude Code to open a local development page or other non-sensitive test page, report what is visible, and take a screenshot if the server offers that tool. Check the result yourself before relying on it for a UI decision.
The setup is complete when Claude Code can see the configured MCP server and invoke its exposed browser tools. A server appearing in the list confirms connection status; it does not establish that the browser can reach every URL, that every interaction succeeded, or that a screenshot represents every user path.

Set an appropriate scope and protect browser access
| Scope | Best fit | What to keep in mind |
|---|---|---|
| Local | One developer’s setup for a particular project machine. | Useful when you do not need to share the server configuration with teammates. |
| Project | A configuration intended to be shared with a team through project settings. | Claude Code can ask users to approve project-scoped servers before use. |
| User | A user-wide setup rather than one attached to a single project. | Consider whether a broadly available browser tool is appropriate for all the projects in which it may be used. |
A browser tool can reach whatever pages and accounts are available to the browser it controls. Begin with a local development page or a test account, not a sensitive authenticated session. Review actions before allowing the assistant to submit forms, change records, send messages, make purchases, or trigger other consequential changes.
- Give the server only the access needed for the task.
- Check its current security model and whether it supports limiting navigation, downloads, or browser arguments before using it in a sensitive environment.
- Do not assume headless mode or a particular browser flag makes a setup safe by itself. Apply the server’s current guidance to your environment.
- Keep secrets and production data out of test pages where possible, and supervise actions that could affect real users or accounts.
What browser MCP is useful for
Depending on the server’s exposed tools, Claude Code can use a browser to navigate to a page, inspect visible content, capture a screenshot, or interact with page controls. This can help with a practical loop: make a UI change, ask Claude Code to open the page, review what rendered, and use the observed result to guide another change.
Anthropic’s prompting guidance identifies browser-automation MCP servers as tools that can help Claude verify UI work. Treat that as an aid to verification, not proof that every user journey works. A screenshot or successful interaction covers only the page state and actions actually examined. Test important paths, responsive layouts, keyboard access, and error states deliberately.
If you instead automate from a JavaScript program, Puppeteer’s library documentation demonstrates the building blocks: navigate to a URL, configure the viewport, enter keyboard input, use locators, and close the browser. That code belongs in your own project or test runner; it does not configure an MCP connection for Claude Code.

Or skip the browser setup
If the job is to capture a clean screenshot or PDF of a page—not to interact with a live browser session—ScreenshotNeo is a website screenshot API and MCP server for developers. A single GET request can return PNG, JPEG, WebP, or PDF. It is not a substitute for an interactive browser tool when Claude Code needs to click through a workflow or inspect a local-only page.
For a one-off public-page capture, install curl and replace YOUR_API_KEY with your ScreenshotNeo key:
curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp
See the ScreenshotNeo API documentation for request options. The same endpoint can be called from Python or Node.js:
import requests
r = requests.get("https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot", params={"access_key": "YOUR_API_KEY", "url": "https://stripe.com"}, timeout=90)
open("shot.webp", "wb").write(r.content)
const q = new URLSearchParams({ access_key: 'YOUR_API_KEY', url: 'https://stripe.com' });
const res = await fetch(`https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot?${q}`);
ScreenshotNeo accepts a consent banner as a visitor and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before capture; each of those steps can be turned off. Bot checks and CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits are not billed, and response headers identify the page verdict and billing status. Its MCP server offers take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf for Claude, Cursor, and other MCP clients.
The Free plan includes 1,000 screenshots per month without a card. Paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 screenshots; all features are available on every plan. For developers who only need captured pages, that can avoid setting up and maintaining a separate browser server.

The browser does not launch
Check that the browser binary expected by Puppeteer or the selected MCP server is installed and compatible. Puppeteer’s puppeteer package downloads a compatible Chrome during installation, while puppeteer-core does not download a browser. If your package manager blocked install scripts, the expected download may not have happened. Puppeteer documents npx puppeteer browsers install as a manual browser-install route; confirm that it fits the package and server you are actually using.
Claude Code does not show the server
Run claude mcp list and inspect /mcp. Check that the configuration is in the scope you intended, that the server command and arguments match its current instructions, and that Claude Code has reloaded or reconnected if required. For project scope, check whether an approval prompt is waiting.
The server connects but a page or action fails
Separate connection success from browser success. Confirm that the browser can reach the target, that the requested action is among the server’s exposed tools, and that the page has loaded into the state you expect. Try a harmless public page first, then check the server’s current troubleshooting guidance for browser, network, or page-specific constraints.

You are using Windows or another less-documented environment
Follow the selected server’s own operating-system instructions. Do not import a Windows command wrapper or workaround written for a different MCP server: the command may not apply to the current implementation. If a server process exits immediately, inspect its documented launch requirements and the error output before changing browser flags.
FAQ
Can I ask Claude Code to “view my browser”?
Claude Code can use browser tools exposed by a connected MCP server. Whether it can see or control a particular existing browser session depends on that server’s design; do not assume it automatically attaches to your everyday browser.
Does a screenshot prove the whole UI is working?
No. It shows a rendered state at a particular point in a particular browser context. Use it as one piece of evidence alongside targeted checks of the interactions and conditions that matter to your application.
Should I use a browser MCP server for a local development site?
It can be a good fit when the server’s browser can reach the local site and its exposed tools cover the task. Start with a non-sensitive page and confirm access from the browser environment the server actually controls.
