Midjourney Describe turns an uploaded image into four text prompt suggestions. On the website, drop an image into the Imagine bar; in Discord, use /describe. You can run one suggestion, run all four, or edit the wording—but Describe is a creative starting point, not a way to recover the image’s original prompt or reproduce it exactly.
These steps reflect Midjourney’s documentation checked in August 2026. Button names, model behavior, and plan details can change.
What Midjourney Describe does
Describe analyzes an image and offers four alternative prompts that may call out its subject, medium, composition, lighting, colors, or mood. The suggestions are interpretations intended to help you find language and creative directions. They are not a definitive caption, an image’s hidden original prompt, or a promise of an exact recreation. Run Describe again on the same image and the suggestions may differ. Before you start
- You need a Midjourney account. Midjourney’s Getting Started guide says a subscription is required to create images. Do not assume that opening Describe means image generation is free; check the current plan terms.
- The website is the simplest route for many beginners. Discord requires a Discord account connected to Midjourney and a channel where the Midjourney Bot can work.
- Midjourney documents a 10 MB maximum for web uploads. If a file is too large, reduce its size or try a different image.
- Consider privacy before uploading. Images are stored in your uploads library, and an image posted in a public Discord space may be visible to others. Avoid public channels for sensitive personal images, client work, or unreleased designs. See Midjourney’s guidance on uploads and visibility and hosting images in Discord.
Use Describe on the Midjourney website
- Sign in to Midjourney and open the Create page.
- Find the Imagine bar. Drag an image from your computer into it, or choose an image you have uploaded.
- Drop the image into the area labeled Drop image to describe.
- Wait for four prompt suggestions to appear on the Create page.
- Choose Use Prompt to put one suggestion in the Imagine bar, or choose Run all prompts to generate images from all four.
- Before submitting, revise the wording if needed. You can correct a misidentified subject, change the medium or mood, or specify framing and lighting.
There is another route for images already on Midjourney: open the image on the Create or Organize page, right-click it, and select Describe Image. The web controls may move as the interface changes. Describe suggestions disappear if you refresh the Create page, so copy any prompt you want to keep before refreshing or navigating away. See the official Describe instructions for the current labels.
Use /describe in Discord
- Open a Discord channel or private space where the Midjourney Bot has permission to work.
- Type
/describe, then select the command from Discord’s command menu. - Choose the image-upload or image-link option. Upload your file, or provide an accessible image URL.
- Send the command and wait for the four numbered suggestions.
- Use the controls to run one suggestion, choose Imagine all to run all four, or refresh for another set of suggestions.
For a local image, wait until its Discord upload has finished before copying its address. If you need a URL, open the image and copy its media link or image address—not the link to the Discord message. An unfinished upload can cause a blob URL error, and a message link is not necessarily a usable image URL. Midjourney explains the distinction in its Discord image-hosting guide.
For an image you do not want exposed in a public channel, use a private Discord space or a direct message with the bot where available. That reduces public-channel exposure; it is not a guarantee of confidentiality.

Turn a suggestion into a better prompt
Describe’s output is a draft, not a command you have to accept unchanged. Keep the details you want, remove guesses, and add the specifics that matter to your new image.
- Subject: Keep the intended person, object, or scene; correct mistakes.
- Medium: Name the result you want, such as editorial photography, an oil painting, an illustration, or a 3D render.
- Framing: Specify a close-up, full-body portrait, wide shot, overhead view, or low angle.
- Light and color: Add direction such as soft window light or hard flash, and a palette if it matters.
- Mood and finish: Describe the atmosphere or visual treatment you want. Remove generic filler that does not help.
- Parameters: Add an aspect ratio or other supported setting only after the descriptive prompt says what the image should contain.
Illustrative rewrite—not a guaranteed Describe result:
Draft: “A cinematic portrait of a woman in a red coat standing in a snowy forest, dramatic lighting, high detail.”

In the four suggestions, look for repeated nouns to identify a likely core subject, repeated adjectives for mood or color, and repeated composition terms for framing. Treat one-off details as optional. If a term is plainly wrong, delete it rather than asking the generator to work around it.
Should you use Describe or attach the image directly?

An Image Prompt lets the image itself guide a new, unique creation; it is still not a guarantee of exact copying. Choose Describe when you need words. Choose an Image Prompt when you want the reference image to influence the result more directly. Choose the Editor when the job is a targeted change to the existing image.

Why Describe may not match the source
Describe does not recover the prompt used to make an image, nor does it promise to preserve every object, spatial relationship, identity, logo, or text element. It can misidentify ambiguous details, miss small text, and offer broad or generic wording. Repeating the request may give you different suggestions because the results are not a single authoritative transcription.
If the result is inaccurate, compare the four suggestions, keep the reliable parts, and add missing details yourself. If the goal is visual continuity rather than prompt vocabulary, use the source as an Image Prompt as well as adding your own text. Do not rely on Describe to retrieve brand names, serial numbers, exact lettering, or product model numbers; verify those manually. It is not a substitute for precise editing, OCR, or reverse-image search.
Troubleshooting
“Describe Image” is missing on the website
Make sure you are on the Create or Organize page and have opened an image or selected one from your uploads. The control may be in a menu, especially in a compact layout, and web labels can change. Try the image menu or the drag-and-drop route through the Imagine bar. If you are in Discord instead, use /describe.

/describe does not appear
Check that Discord is updated, that the Midjourney Bot is available in the channel, and that it has permission to work there. Confirm that your Discord account is connected to Midjourney. Midjourney’s command list also recommends checking Discord’s legacy chat input setting when commands are missing.
The image link fails or returns a blob URL error
Wait for the upload to finish, then open the image and copy its media address rather than the message link. A link may also be inaccessible or unsuitable as a direct image resource. If URL handling is the problem, try uploading through the website or attaching the image in Discord instead.
The prompts are too generic or inaccurate
Try another Describe run, compare its four suggestions with the first set, and manually add the subject, framing, lighting, medium, or colors that matter. Remove invented objects and incorrect text. Use an Image Prompt if you need the image itself to provide stronger visual guidance.
I refreshed the page and lost the suggestions
Describe’s results disappear when the Create page is refreshed. Copy useful wording before refreshing or leaving the page, then paste it into a note or the Imagine bar.
Does Describe require a paid plan?
Midjourney’s Getting Started guide says a subscription is required to create images. The fact that Describe controls are visible does not establish that the whole workflow—including generating images from its suggestions—is free. Plans, prices, included generation time, and privacy options can change; check Midjourney’s official plan comparison before subscribing. As listed in the documentation checked in August 2026, Basic, Standard, Pro, and Mega were offered; Standard, Pro, and Mega included Relax Mode image generations, while Stealth Mode was listed for Pro and Mega. Treat those details as time-sensitive, not a guarantee of privacy or a permanent pricing table. The feature is available through the website and Discord, so choose the interface that suits you; Discord itself does not replace a Midjourney generation subscription.
Current version note
Midjourney’s documentation says Describe has been updated for V8.1 to produce longer, more detailed prompts. Version availability and behavior can change, and the documented result should not be taken as a promise that every account or interface has identical controls. Check the Midjourney documentation for current details.
