To use MCP with BrowserStack, connect an AI client to BrowserStack’s MCP server, then ask the client to launch or manage a supported BrowserStack testing workflow. You can run the server locally with Node.js v22 or later and BrowserStack credentials, or use BrowserStack’s remote MCP endpoint; the documented VS Code remote flow uses OAuth. The browser and device sessions run on BrowserStack’s cloud infrastructure, not on your computer.

What BrowserStack MCP does—and what it does not do

The Model Context Protocol (MCP) gives an AI client a standard way to request actions from tools. In this setup, the AI client sends a request to BrowserStack’s MCP server, which routes it to a relevant BrowserStack testing product and returns results or session information. BrowserStack describes workflows across Live, Automate, App Live, App Automate, Accessibility, Percy visual testing, Test Management, AI agents, and Test Reporting & Analytics. Available tools depend on the product and account entitlement; connecting an MCP server does not automatically grant access to every workflow. BrowserStack’s MCP overview and tools and workflows documentation describe the integration.

MCP is the assistant-facing connection, not a local replacement for BrowserStack’s hosted browsers and devices. It is also distinct from BrowserStack Local Testing: MCP exposes tools to the AI client, while Local Testing establishes connectivity from BrowserStack to a website or app on localhost, staging, or a private network.

Choose local or remote MCP setup

Consideration Local server Remote server
Where it runs The MCP server process runs on your machine through the client configuration. The client connects to BrowserStack’s hosted endpoint.
Authentication in documented setup BrowserStack username and access key supplied as environment variables. The documented VS Code setup uses OAuth authorization.
Runtime prerequisite Node.js v22 or later. No local MCP package installation is needed for the remote connection.
Configuration Client-specific global or project configuration. Client-specific HTTP server configuration; VS Code instructions also show project configuration.

Choose based on the MCP modes supported by your client, where your organization permits the process and credentials to live, and whether you need project-scoped or user-wide configuration. The connection method does not change the BrowserStack product license required for a workflow. Setup details can change, so follow the current instructions for your client: Get started with BrowserStack MCP.

Set up the local BrowserStack MCP server

Prerequisites

  • A BrowserStack account, username, and access key.
  • Node.js v22 or later available to the MCP client.
  • An MCP-capable AI client. BrowserStack’s local setup documentation lists VS Code, Cursor, Claude Desktop, and Cline.
  • Permission to use the BrowserStack product corresponding to the workflow you plan to run.

Configure the client

BrowserStack’s local setup uses the @browserstack/mcp-server npm package. Add an MCP server entry in the format your client expects. This representative configuration passes credentials through environment variables rather than embedding them in the file:

{
  "mcpServers": {
    "browserstack": {
      "command": "npx",
      "args": ["-y", "@browserstack/mcp-server@latest"],
      "env": {
        "BROWSERSTACK_USERNAME": "YOUR_USERNAME",
        "BROWSERSTACK_ACCESS_KEY": "YOUR_ACCESS_KEY"
      }
    }
  }
}

Replace the example values with your BrowserStack credentials. The JSON shape and file location vary by client, so use BrowserStack’s client-specific local server setup instructions rather than assuming this example can be pasted unchanged into every application. The documentation also describes global and project-specific configuration patterns.

  1. Install or verify Node.js v22 or later.
  2. Open the MCP configuration instructions for your chosen client and create a global or project-level server entry.
  3. Provide BROWSERSTACK_USERNAME and BROWSERSTACK_ACCESS_KEY through the client’s environment-variable configuration.
  4. Save the configuration, then start or enable the server as required by the client.
  5. Check that the client lists BrowserStack tools before asking it to run a test.

The example uses @latest, which follows the latest published package. If your team needs repeatable environments, check the package’s current version guidance before deciding how to pin it. Do not commit real access keys or expose them in logs; use your organization’s approved secret-handling method.

Connect through BrowserStack’s remote MCP server

For a remote connection, BrowserStack documents the endpoint https://mcp.browserstack.com/mcp. This avoids installing the MCP server package locally. In the documented VS Code flow, add the endpoint as an HTTP MCP server and complete OAuth authorization. BrowserStack also shows a project configuration using a servers object. The exact configuration schema and authentication steps depend on the client, so use its current MCP instructions alongside BrowserStack’s remote MCP setup guide.

After authorization, confirm the client shows the BrowserStack server and its available tools. The remote route does not remove the need for access to the relevant BrowserStack product or its license.

Run browser tests and inspect results

Manual cross-browser inspection with Live

For an interactive browser session, BrowserStack documents the runBrowserLiveSession tool. Ask the assistant to open a specific URL and identify the browser, operating system or platform, and browser version you want. For example: “Use BrowserStack Live to open https://example.com in [browser] on [platform] at [version], then tell me what appears in the page header.” Replace the bracketed details with the target you need. Live MCP tools require a Live license; see the BrowserStack Live MCP instructions.

Automated web tests

BrowserStack’s MCP tools include Automate workflows for running builds or capturing screenshots. BrowserStack also describes using MCP to run Playwright and Selenium suites on its infrastructure and help inspect failures, logs, and possible fixes. State the suite or build to run and what evidence you need back—for example, a failure summary and the relevant logs or screenshots. Review the underlying test output yourself: an AI-generated diagnosis or proposed code change is not proof that a failure is fixed.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Other documented workflows

The tools catalog also groups workflows for native mobile testing, accessibility scans, Percy visual testing, test reporting and analytics, and Test Management. Test Management tools can create projects and test cases, start runs, and update results; BrowserStack explicitly requires a Test Management license for those tools. The reviewed documentation does not provide a complete entitlement matrix for every other toolset, so confirm availability in your account and with the relevant product documentation before building a workflow around it.

Make localhost, staging, or private sites reachable

When the test target is not publicly reachable, BrowserStack Local Testing is the relevant connectivity feature. BrowserStack documents it for localhost, staging, and private or internal networks, including environments behind a proxy, firewall, or VPN. Its JavaScript testing guidance describes a secure connection between the local or internal environment and BrowserStack cloud; localhost and internal HTTPS URLs can work once Local Testing is set up.

Think of this as two separate connections: configure the MCP server so the AI client can invoke BrowserStack tools, and establish Local Testing so BrowserStack can reach the private target. A test may need both. See BrowserStack Local Testing and its JavaScript testing Local Testing guide for the relevant network setup.

Troubleshoot connection and test problems

  • The local server does not appear in the client: Check the client’s configuration path and schema, make sure the server is enabled or started, and verify that the client can find Node.js v22 or later.
  • Local authentication fails: Confirm the BrowserStack username and access key, then check the exact environment variable names: BROWSERSTACK_USERNAME and BROWSERSTACK_ACCESS_KEY. Do not paste credentials into prompts or share logs that contain them.
  • The remote server will not connect: Confirm the configured endpoint is https://mcp.browserstack.com/mcp and finish the client’s OAuth authorization flow where required. Recheck the client’s current remote MCP configuration format.
  • A tool is missing or reports an entitlement error: Check that the corresponding BrowserStack product is enabled for the account and that the required license is available. Live and Test Management have explicit license requirements in their MCP documentation.
  • BrowserStack cannot open a localhost or private URL: Verify that the appropriate Local Testing connection is active and that proxy, firewall, or VPN rules allow the connection. MCP connectivity alone does not make a private site reachable.
  • The assistant’s summary does not match the test: Inspect the underlying session, logs, screenshots, or test report. Treat the returned artifacts and test results as the evidence; the assistant’s interpretation is fallible.

Or skip the browser setup

If the job is to capture a website screenshot rather than run an interactive cross-browser test suite, ScreenshotNeo offers a one-request screenshot API and an MCP server. It removes cookie and consent banners, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before capture; bot checks, blank pages, and failed loads are never billed. AI agents can use its MCP tools, and the free plan includes 1,000 screenshots a month with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000. It is a screenshot service, not a substitute for BrowserStack Live or Automate testing.

One cURL request returns an image file (replace the target URL as needed):

curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp

See the ScreenshotNeo API documentation for request options and response details. For a screenshot-specific workflow, ScreenshotNeo is an alternative to try first. Sign up for 1,000 free screenshots a month with no card.
