Use an LLM to turn a clear website brief into a proposed sitemap, page layouts, draft copy and visual direction—then inspect and revise the result before launch. The most reliable workflow is to settle the site’s structure first, refine one category at a time, and test the actual pages, not just the prompt or preview. Generated pages and code are drafts: you remain responsible for their functionality, accessibility, security-sensitive behavior and search fundamentals.
What an LLM can—and cannot—do in website design
An LLM can help translate plain-language requirements into a first pass at the things a website needs: navigation, page sections, content hierarchy, copy and visual ideas. Depending on the tool, it may also generate editable pages or help change an existing project. For example, Microsoft Power Pages documents a flow that uses a description to generate a sitemap, homepage layout variations and suggested pages. In that product, generated pages do not automatically create forms or lists; those may require separate work in the design studio. That distinction matters: generation is not the same as a complete, working site.
Think of the model as a drafting and iteration partner, not an authority on your business or a substitute for review. It cannot know which claims are true unless you provide reliable source material, and a convincing mockup does not establish that a form works, a site is accessible or an account flow is secure. Expect to supply context, make decisions and test what gets built.

- Purpose: What should the site help visitors understand or do?
- Audience: Who is visiting, what do they already know, and what questions or concerns bring them there?
- Pages: List required pages and any important content each must include.
- Visitor actions: State the actions that need to work, such as contacting you, submitting an enquiry or signing in.
- Brand direction: Describe the desired tone, colors, typography, visual references and assets you can supply.
- Accurate content: Identify facts the site must preserve and provide approved source material. Tell the model not to invent claims, prices, policies or testimonials.
- Constraints: Name the platform, existing design system, technical requirements and publishing or hosting constraints, if known.
Separate confirmed facts from preferences and open questions. If a decision is unknown, ask the model to flag it instead of filling the gap with invented copy.
Start with a sitemap prompt
Ask for a structure before a polished visual concept. For example:
“Plan a website for [organization or project]. Its purpose is [goal]. The audience is [audience]. Required pages are [list]. Visitors should be able to [actions]. Use only these confirmed facts: [facts or source text]. Brand direction: [description]. Constraints: [platform and technical requirements]. First return a sitemap with the purpose of each page and the key sections it needs. Mark assumptions and missing information. Do not write final copy or invent facts yet.”
Recommended Free Tools
Review the sitemap for missing pages, unclear labels, duplicate sections and actions with no obvious path. Ask for corrections now; polishing colors around a confusing structure wastes effort.
Generate the first page drafts
Once the sitemap makes sense, ask for each page’s section order, the job of each section and draft content. You can request a low-fidelity layout description first, then visual direction once the hierarchy is sound. Have the model distinguish required content from optional suggestions and preserve supplied facts verbatim where accuracy matters.
For an AI-enabled platform, use its documented generation workflow and check what the generator actually creates. Power Pages is one product-specific example: its documentation describes sitemap, homepage-layout and suggested-page generation from a description, while noting that forms and lists may need to be created separately. Do not assume another builder creates the same components or uses the same process.
Refine in focused passes
Do not ask for structure, branding, responsiveness and copy changes all at once. Make one class of change, inspect the result in the actual preview or project, and keep a known-good version before proceeding.

- Hierarchy: Make the primary message, supporting evidence and next action easy to distinguish.
- Visual direction: Adjust typography, spacing, color and imagery against the supplied brand constraints.
- Content: Improve clarity and tone while checking every factual claim against approved material.
- Responsive behavior: Review narrow and wide layouts, then request targeted changes where content becomes hard to use.
Useful bounded requests include “show a simpler navigation with the same pages,” “make the primary action clearer without adding claims,” or “describe how this section should rearrange on a narrow screen.” Review each change rather than assuming the prompt was followed precisely. A plain-language-to-preview iteration loop is also described in TechRadar’s workflow coverage, but that is general secondary guidance, not a controlled evaluation of every builder.

Choose a workflow that fits the project
The right tool depends on how much control you need and what already exists. A visual builder may suit a new site when an integrated route from description to editable pages is useful. An AI coding assistant or platform integration may fit better when you need to work directly with source code, an established design system or an existing site. These are different workflows, not a universal ranking of products.
| Project situation | Workflow to consider | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| New site; prefer visual editing over direct code changes | An AI-enabled visual website platform | What it generates, which components need separate setup, how you review edits and how publishing works. |
| Existing site or design system | A platform integration that lets an AI tool work with project data | Granted access, supported operations, review controls and whether changes can affect a live project. |
| Need direct control over implementation | An AI coding assistant working with the codebase | Whether you can inspect, test and maintain the generated code and meet the site’s technical requirements. |
Elementor describes an MCP workflow with external AI tools inside Elementor and WordPress. Webflow describes its MCP server as exposing project elements, styles, components, collections, assets and related site data to AI tools. These are vendor descriptions of their own capabilities, not independent comparative evaluations. Before connecting an agent to a project, inspect the access it receives, what it can change and how you will review those changes. If you work with code or integrations, keep control of the project and verify the output instead of treating tool access as approval to publish.
Review the site before launch
A polished preview is not proof that the site works. Review every page in the browser and test the visitor tasks the site is meant to support.
- Pages and navigation: Open each page, follow every navigation item and check that links go to the intended destination.
- Forms and actions: Submit test entries where appropriate; check validation, confirmation states and what happens after submission. A displayed form is not evidence that its submission works.
- Responsive layouts: Inspect narrow and wide viewports. Check that text, controls and navigation remain usable and that important content is not obscured or awkwardly ordered.
- Accessibility: Ask for accessible output, then verify it. Check image descriptions, keyboard access and whether interactive controls can be understood and operated. AI tools vary in their accessibility support, and coding workflows can omit accessibility requirements or verification.
- Accounts and payments: If present, test the intended flows carefully. Have security-sensitive implementation reviewed by someone competent to do so.
- Claims and content: Compare factual statements with approved source material. Remove invented facts and unsupported assurances.
- Credentials: Keep passwords, API keys and other secrets out of prompts. Do not give an AI tool sensitive information merely to make a prototype feel realistic.
These checks are practical launch safeguards, not a claim that every generated site has the same defects. The amount of review needed depends on what the site does and what consequences a failure would have.

Keep search basics in the design
Google’s guidance says existing SEO fundamentals remain relevant to its AI search features; it does not require special AI markup or a separate machine-readable file for a page to appear in AI Overviews or AI Mode. Build pages that can be crawled and found, provide useful content in text form, use relevant media where it helps, maintain a good page experience and ensure structured data matches what visitors can see.
Do not respond to AI search by publishing large volumes of thin, lightly edited generated pages. Google’s guidance emphasizes useful, people-first content and warns that scaled content with little added value can violate its scaled content abuse policy. Ask the model to help make a genuinely useful page clearer, not to manufacture pages for supposed ranking shortcuts. Search guidance can evolve, so consult Google Search Central for current recommendations.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Check the finished design in a real browser
After the builder or developer workflow has produced a usable page, inspect its rendered appearance at the viewports that matter to your visitors. A browser capture can help document what changed between revisions or surface visible layout problems. It does not test keyboard access, validate form submissions or prove that an account flow is secure, so use it alongside—not instead of—the checks above.
Or skip the browser setup
If you need a screenshot of a published URL without wiring up a browser automation environment, ScreenshotNeo is a website screenshot API and MCP server for developers. One GET request can return a PNG, JPEG, WebP or PDF. Cookie and consent banners, newsletter popups and chat widgets are removed before capture; those steps can be turned off. Bot checks, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads and cache hits cost nothing, and responses identify page verdict and billing status in headers. Its MCP server offers screenshot and page-information tools for AI agents.
For example, this cURL request saves a WebP screenshot:

Replace the example URL with the page you want to inspect and provide your API key. The ScreenshotNeo documentation covers the API options and response details. Free includes 1,000 screenshots per month with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000. Sign up for free: 1,000 screenshots a month, no card required.
Common problems and what to do
- The model invents pages, claims or business details. Give it the confirmed facts and required pages, explicitly prohibit invented material, and ask it to flag gaps. Verify factual copy against approved sources before publishing.
- The first result looks polished but the site is hard to navigate. Return to the sitemap and visitor tasks. Correct page names and paths before requesting further visual refinement.
- A generated form or list is missing. Check the platform’s documentation to see whether that element is generated or must be added separately. Power Pages, for example, notes that generated pages do not automatically create forms or lists.
- A visual change causes regressions elsewhere. Request a narrower revision, inspect affected pages and restore a known-good version if needed. Do not treat a successful preview of one page as validation of the whole site.
- The site is difficult to use with a keyboard or images lack descriptions. Treat this as unfinished work: ask for the specific accessibility improvement, then test it rather than relying on the model’s assurance.
- An AI integration can access more than expected. Review its granted permissions and supported operations before connecting it to a project, especially a live one; restrict access and review changes before they are applied or published.
- A screenshot does not match the expected page. Check whether the URL loads successfully and whether a consent layer, bot check or other page state affected what a browser could render. A screenshot is a visual record of a capture, not evidence that every interaction works.
Frequently asked questions
Can ChatGPT design a website?
An LLM can help plan a sitemap, propose page sections, draft copy and suggest visual direction. Whether it can directly create or edit a website depends on the platform or integration being used; a conversational response alone is not a published, tested site.
Do I need to know how to code?
Not necessarily for a visual builder, but coding knowledge helps when a project needs direct implementation control or custom changes. In either workflow, someone still needs to inspect and test the result.
Can AI-generated website content appear in Google’s AI search results?
Google’s guidance says its ordinary search fundamentals remain relevant and that no special AI markup is required for AI Overviews or AI Mode. Eligibility or appearance for a particular page is not guaranteed by using AI or adding markup.
