To translate a one-to-one FaceTime conversation on a compatible iPhone, start the call, tap the screen, then choose More (…) → Live Translation → Choose Language. Select the language the other person is speaking, download it if prompted, and tap Start Translation. FaceTime shows translated live captions on your screen; it does not replace the other caller’s voice with spoken translation.
What FaceTime Live Translation does
Live Translation recognizes the other participant’s speech and displays a translation as captions while the FaceTime conversation continues. You still hear the original speaker. Apple says starting translation alerts both participants, so this is not a hidden transcription mode. Apple describes the processing as happening on device, though that does not remove FaceTime’s need for an internet connection.

FaceTime’s translated captions are different from Live Translation in Apple’s Phone app, which can provide spoken translations during phone calls. If you need translated audio rather than text on screen, do not assume the FaceTime feature will do that.

Check that your iPhone is eligible
Installing iOS 26 is not enough: Apple Intelligence has stricter device requirements than iOS 26 itself. Before setting up the feature, check that you have:

- This phone is unlocked and compatible with any carrier of choice on GSM and CDMA networks (e.g. AT&T, T-Mobile, Sprint, Verizon, US Cellular, Cricket, Metro, Tracfone, Mint Mobile, etc.).
- Please check with your carrier to verify compatibility.
- The device does not come with headphones or a SIM card. It does include a generic (Mfi certified) charging cable.
- Tested for battery health and guaranteed to have a minimum battery capacity of 80%.
- A compatible iPhone: iPhone 15 Pro models, or iPhone 16 models and later. An older iPhone may run iOS 26 without supporting Apple Intelligence.
- iOS 26 or later: Install the latest iOS 26 update available for your device.
- Apple Intelligence enabled: Go to Settings → Apple Intelligence & Siri.
- Matching supported languages: Your iPhone’s device language and Siri language must be set to the same supported language.
- Storage for the models: Apple lists approximately 7 GB of available device storage for Apple Intelligence models.
- A supported translation language and region: Availability and supported variants can differ by language, region, and software release.
- A stable internet connection: FaceTime needs connectivity. Mobile data use may incur carrier charges.
Apple’s requirements and regional exceptions can change. Check its Apple Intelligence device and language requirements and feature availability table if something does not match your setup.
Turn on Apple Intelligence
- Open Settings.
- Tap Apple Intelligence & Siri.
- Turn on Apple Intelligence, or tap Turn on Apple Intelligence if that is the wording shown.
- Keep the iPhone connected to Wi-Fi and power while its on-device models download. The download can take time.
- Check that the device language and Siri language match and are supported.
If the Apple Intelligence setting is missing, check the iPhone model, iOS version, language, region, and Apple Account configuration against Apple’s current requirements.

Download the language before an important call
FaceTime may offer to download the required language model when you choose a language in the call controls. If it has not finished downloading, translation may be unavailable or take several minutes to start. For a planned conversation, select the language and let the download finish beforehand, if the language or Live Translation settings are available on your iOS release. Keep the phone on Wi-Fi and power, and free storage if needed.
Not every language direction or regional variant is guaranteed. Apple’s language list identifies supported languages, but availability can depend on the current software release and region. Verify your intended languages in Apple’s live availability information.

Start Live Translation in FaceTime
- Open the FaceTime app and start a call as usual.
- During the active call, tap the screen to show the controls.
- Tap More (…).
- Tap Live Translation.
- Tap Choose Language.
- Select the language the other person is speaking.
- If prompted, allow the language model to download and wait for it to finish.
- Tap Start Translation.
Continue speaking normally and read the translated captions on screen. Apple’s documented FaceTime flow is More → Live Translation → Choose Language → Start Translation.
What to expect during the conversation
- Captions appear on your screen: They represent translated speech, not a guaranteed word-for-word transcript.
- The other person is alerted: Apple says both parties are notified when translation starts. The precise on-screen indicator can vary with the FaceTime interface and software release.
- You continue to hear the original voice: FaceTime captions do not dub or replace the other caller’s voice.
- There may be delay or errors: Accents, background noise, interruptions, overlapping voices, proper names, slang, and specialist vocabulary can affect recognition and translation. Ask the other person to speak one at a time, reduce background noise, and confirm important details aloud.
- It is not an interpreter for high-stakes decisions: Do not rely on generated captions alone for medical, legal, financial, or emergency conversations. Apple warns that caption accuracy may vary and should not be relied on in high-risk or emergency situations.
Apple says Live Translation runs on device. That is a privacy design detail, not a guarantee about every aspect of FaceTime, diagnostics, or network traffic. See Apple’s iPhone Live Translation guide for its description of on-device processing and language downloads.

Stop translation
To stop, bring up the in-call controls and open More (…) and Live Translation again. Use the stop or disable control shown in your installed iOS version; Apple’s available instructions specify how to start translation but do not establish one universal stop-button label. Confirm that translated captions have stopped before continuing if you no longer want them.

Languages and regional availability
As of Apple’s support information accessed in August 2026, FaceTime and Phone Live Translation support English (U.S. and U.K.), French (France), German, Italian, Japanese, Korean, Portuguese (Brazil), Spanish (Spain), Simplified Chinese, and Traditional Chinese. Do not assume that every regional variant or translation direction is available just because a language appears on the list. Apple may update support and some features vary by region; check its current language requirements and regional feature table before relying on a particular language.

If Live Translation is missing or not working

Which alternative should you use?
- Phone Live Translation: Consider this for a regular phone call when spoken translation is more useful than FaceTime captions. Its behavior differs from the FaceTime feature.
- Live Captions: Use captions when you need speech transcribed in the same language rather than translated. Live Captions and Live Translation are distinct functions.
- Apple Translate: Useful for translating text, phrases, or nearby conversations manually, but it is not the same integrated FaceTime caption workflow.
- Another translation app or a human interpreter: Consider this for unsupported languages, group conversations, saved transcripts, or specialized terminology. Check the app’s language support and privacy practices; switching apps can add friction, and consequential conversations may call for a qualified interpreter.
For most routine one-to-one conversations, FaceTime Live Translation is most useful when both people already use FaceTime, the language pair is supported, and on-screen translated captions are enough. It is not a substitute for spoken interpretation or a reliable human interpreter when accuracy has serious consequences.
