Gmail’s standard web composer has no documented raw-HTML editor. You can paste the rendered result of an HTML file, use Gmail’s built-in signatures, templates or layouts, or send HTML programmatically through the Gmail API. The right option depends on whether you need a one-off message, a reusable signature, a branded email or automated sending.
The key distinction: copying HTML source such as <a href="https://example.com">Visit our site</a> usually puts those tags into your message as text. To use the design without the code, copy its rendered appearance from a browser—or choose one of Gmail’s visual tools.
What “HTML in Gmail” can mean
These terms describe different things:
- HTML source: Markup and CSS, such as
<table>, links and inline styles. - Rendered HTML: The visual page a browser produces from that source.
- Rich text: Formatting—such as bold text, links and images—created or edited with Gmail’s composer.
- HTML email: A message with a
text/htmlpart that a recipient’s mail app can render.
Gmail can send and display HTML email; the limitation is that its ordinary composer does not offer a documented mode for editing raw HTML source. Google’s [compose and formatting guide](https://support.google.com/mail/answer/9259768?hl=en) describes the regular editor, not a source-code view.
Paste a rendered HTML email into Gmail
For a one-off message, copying the displayed result from a browser is a practical workaround. It is not an HTML-file import feature, and the formatting may change when Gmail handles the paste or a recipient’s email app renders it.

- Create or open your
.htmlfile in a browser such as Chrome, Edge, Firefox or Safari. Confirm that you see the design, not markup. - Select the displayed content. Use Ctrl+A, then Ctrl+C on Windows or Linux; on Mac use Command+A, then Command+C. Do not copy from View Source or developer tools.
- Open Gmail on a computer, click Compose, then click in the message body.
- Paste with Ctrl+V on Windows or Linux, or Command+V on Mac. Add the recipients and subject.
- Inspect the message in Gmail and send a test to an address you can check before sending it to your intended recipients.
Check that text is editable, links lead to the right pages, images load, buttons remain linked, and spacing and colors survived. Review the message on a phone and, if your recipients use them, in Outlook or Apple Mail. Browser copy may not preserve external stylesheets, responsive behavior or every design detail. Gmail may also normalize or remove markup it does not support.
Add a rendered HTML signature
For a recurring signature with a logo, contact links or social links, copy the rendered signature from a browser or visual editor—not the code in a text editor.
Rank #2
- Open the signature in a browser and check how it renders.
- Select and copy the visible signature.
- In Gmail on a computer, open Settings → See all settings → General.
- Scroll to Signature, click Create new, and name it.
- Paste the rendered signature into the editor. Set it as a default for new messages or replies if you want Gmail to insert it automatically.
- Scroll to the bottom and click Save Changes. Compose a message to check the result.
Google’s [Workspace signature guidance](https://knowledge.workspace.google.com/admin/gmail/set-up-google-workspace-user-signatures-in-gmail?hl=en) covers formatted signatures and organization-level administration. If an image disappears, it may have been local, inaccessible or copied as a reference Gmail cannot retain. Use an accessible image, add alt text and keep essential contact details as text. If there are unexpected gaps, simplify spacing and check image size. Resize an oversized logo before copying or in the signature editor. Test the signature separately in Gmail’s mobile app; desktop-created formatting may not behave identically there.
Use Gmail Layouts for a branded email
If you want a polished design without writing HTML, Gmail’s Layouts feature is the native visual option. Google lists Workspace Individual, Business Standard, Business Plus, Enterprise Standard, Enterprise Plus, Education Standard and Education Plus as eligible editions. Availability can also depend on account configuration and administrator settings, so a missing control does not necessarily mean you have overlooked it.
Rank #3
- Open Gmail on a computer and click Compose.
- At the bottom of the compose window, click Layouts. If it is not visible, check More options.
- Choose a preset layout or start under My layouts, then click Edit layout.
- Add or rearrange text, images, buttons, logos, sections, footer details and social links. Preview desktop, tablet and mobile views.
- Click Insert or Insert in Gmail, then review the draft before sending.
Google says layouts are saved in Drive and can be reused, duplicated, shared or edited. Once inserted in a draft, their contents cannot be edited directly there; use the layout’s edit control to return to the layout editor. Google’s documented limits are 10,000 characters, 40 images, 50 tiles and 25 MB total image size. Add alt text so a message remains understandable when images do not render. Some Outlook versions use Microsoft Word to render HTML, so a layout may look different there. See Google’s [Layouts guide](https://support.google.com/mail/answer/13397089?hl=en) for current eligibility and instructions.
Save reusable formatted messages as Templates
Gmail Templates are useful for recurring replies, outreach or support messages. They save message content for reuse; they are not a way to import or maintain a raw HTML file.

- In Gmail on a computer, open Settings → See all settings → Advanced.
- Next to Templates, select Enable, then click Save Changes.
- Compose and format a message. In the compose window, click More options → Templates → Save draft as template → Save as new template.
- To reuse it, open a compose window and choose More options → Templates, then select the saved template.
Google documents this as a computer workflow, not a general mobile authoring feature. Its [Templates instructions](https://support.google.com/mail/answer/14864208?hl=en-uk) note that deleted templates cannot be recovered.

For a message several people need to review, Google Docs offers a formatted draft workflow. In a Doc, select Insert → Building blocks → Email draft, or type @email. Add recipients, subject and body, then click Preview in Gmail to make final changes and send from Gmail. Google says the preview workflow requires the Google Account language to be set to English. This is a collaborative drafting option, not a raw HTML editor; see [Google’s instructions](https://support.google.com/mail/answer/11930385?hl=en).

Send true HTML through the Gmail API
For exact markup, automation or an application integration, build a MIME message with a plain-text alternative and an HTML part, encode the complete message using base64URL, and send it through the Gmail API. You can call messages.send directly or create a draft with drafts.create and then send it. Google’s [sending guide](https://developers.google.com/workspace/gmail/api/guides/sending) documents the message format and API flow.
This requires more than the code below: configure a Google Cloud project, enable the Gmail API, obtain OAuth authorization and request an appropriate Gmail scope. Workspace policies and user consent can affect access. Use the least-privilege scope that supports the operation; Google’s [draft creation reference](https://developers.google.com/workspace/gmail/api/reference/rest/v1/users.drafts/create) lists options including gmail.compose, gmail.modify and mail.google.com.
import base64
from email.message import EmailMessage
# Assume `service` is an authorized Gmail API client.
def send_html_email(service, sender, recipient):
message = EmailMessage()
message["From"] = sender
message["To"] = recipient
message["Subject"] = "HTML email from Gmail API"
message.set_content(
"Plain-text fallback for clients that do not display HTML."
)
message.add_alternative(
"""<!doctype html>
<html><body style="font-family:Arial,sans-serif">
<h1 style="color:#1a73e8">Hello</h1>
<p>This is an HTML email sent through the Gmail API.</p>
<p><a href="https://example.com">Visit the website</a></p>
</body></html>""",
subtype="html",
)
raw = base64.urlsafe_b64encode(message.as_bytes()).decode()
return service.users().messages().send(
userId="me", body={"raw": raw}
).execute()
The sample assumes an already authorized API client; it is not a stand-alone script that sends mail without setup. For personalized messages drawn from a spreadsheet, Google provides an [Apps Script Gmail-and-Sheets mail-merge sample](https://developers.google.com/apps-script/samples/automations/mail-merge) that uses an HTML body. Review applicable Google service quotas and Gmail sending limits before using automation.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesChoose the right method
- One-off formatted email: Copy the rendered result from a browser. Quick, but check the pasted content.
- Recurring signature: Use Gmail’s Signature editor.
- Reusable reply or outreach message: Enable Templates.
- Branded no-code design: Use Layouts if your Workspace edition and account allow it.
- Team review: Draft in Google Docs and preview in Gmail.
- Exact HTML or automation: Use the Gmail API or Apps Script if you can manage authorization and code.
- Newsletters and campaigns: Use an email platform designed for list management, unsubscribes, analytics and campaign delivery rather than ordinary one-to-one Gmail compose.
Eligible Workspace accounts can also use Gmail’s built-in [mail merge](https://support.google.com/mail/answer/12921167?hl=en-GB). For larger marketing operations, a dedicated service is generally a better fit than personal Gmail; sending limits, consent requirements and unsubscribe handling matter as much as the design.
Troubleshoot common problems
| Problem | Likely cause | What to try |
|---|---|---|
| HTML tags appear as text | You copied source code. | Open the file in a browser and copy the displayed design. |
| Formatting disappears | Gmail removed or normalized markup, or the design depends on external CSS. | Inline critical styles, simplify the markup, and test again. For source-level control, generate MIME through the API. |
| Images vanish | The image path is local or inaccessible, the recipient blocks remote images, or paste altered the markup. | Use an accessible HTTPS image where appropriate, add alt text and make the message understandable without images. Test from another account. |
| Button does not work | The hyperlink was lost or malformed. | Use a standard linked element, then click and verify its destination in the draft. Avoid JavaScript. |
| Layouts is missing | The account may not have an eligible edition, the control may be under More options, or an administrator may have restricted access. | Check the account’s Workspace edition and settings, and ask the administrator if needed. |
| Looks good in Gmail but breaks in Outlook | Email clients render HTML differently; some Outlook versions use Microsoft Word. | Simplify the design, use email-compatible tables and inline CSS, and test in the target client. |
| Desktop design is too wide on a phone | The layout may have fixed-width content or weak mobile styling. | Use a responsive, email-compatible design, readable text and tap targets; preview on mobile and test in an actual mobile client. |
Google publishes a [CSS support reference for Gmail](https://developers.google.com/workspace/gmail/design/css). Gmail support for a CSS feature does not guarantee that Outlook, Apple Mail or every other recipient app supports it. For broad compatibility, prefer inline styles, use tables for complex email layouts, avoid JavaScript, forms and embedded video, and keep important content visible when images are blocked.
