The correct address is messages.google.com/web—not “messages.google.web.” It connects Google Messages on an Android phone to a browser so you can read and send messages on a computer. In the United States, Google’s current setup uses Google Account sign-in and emoji confirmation, not QR scanning.
What Google Messages for web does
Google Messages is the Android app; Messages for web is its browser interface. After pairing, the browser shows conversations from the phone’s Google Messages app. It is not a separate SMS account or an independent inbox: Google describes SMS on the web as working through a connection between the computer and the phone. - An Android phone running Android 5.0 or later, with Google Messages installed and updated.
- An active internet connection on the phone and computer.
- A Google Account selected in Google Messages for account-based pairing.
- A supported computer browser: Chrome, Firefox, Safari, or Microsoft Edge. Internet Explorer is not supported.

Pair Google Messages with a computer in the United States
- On your phone: Open Google Messages, tap your profile picture or account menu in the upper-right corner, then tap Device pairing. If prompted, choose or sign in to the Google Account you want to use.
- On your computer: Open messages.google.com/web and sign in with the same Google Account selected in Google Messages on your phone.
- When the computer displays three emoji, find the matching emoji on your phone and tap it to confirm.
- Wait for the phone to vibrate and for your conversations to appear in the browser.
After pairing, recent conversation threads, contacts, and some settings appear in the browser. The browser may cache encrypted conversation data and settings, and the browser tab can show a red indicator when messages are unread. Google’s Messages for web help
Send and receive messages
- Select a conversation from the list to open it.
- To start a conversation, choose the new-message control and enter a contact or phone number.
- Type your message and send it from the browser. Incoming messages appear in the conversation view.

Use Messages for web on an Android tablet
Google supports Messages for web on Android tablets using the same general pairing approach. Carrier fees may still apply. Some cellular tablets with a SIM card may send messages without connecting to the phone, but this is a device-specific exception, not the usual phone-linked setup. Google Messages for web on tablets

Unpair a computer
From the computer
- Open Messages for web.
- Open the menu in the upper-left corner.
- Select Unpair.
From your phone
- Open Google Messages and tap your profile picture or account menu.
- Tap Device pairing.
- Select a computer and choose Delete or Unpair to disconnect just that device, or choose Unpair all computers to end every session.

Fix pairing or connection problems
Work through these checks in order. Google’s troubleshooting guidance covers account matching, connectivity, background data, VPNs, browser extensions, battery optimization, and stale device pairings. Troubleshoot Messages for web
- Check the account first. Make sure the Google Account selected in the phone app is the same one used on the computer. Reopen Device pairing on the phone and refresh the web page.
- Update and reload. Update Google Messages, then refresh Messages for web. If the phone was recently replaced, reset, or restored, remove old computer pairings if possible and pair again from the current phone.
- Check both internet connections. Confirm the phone and computer can get online over Wi-Fi or mobile data. Weak phone connectivity can make web messages slow or unavailable.
- Allow background data. Check that Google Messages is allowed to use background data; otherwise, the phone may not maintain a dependable connection.
- Temporarily check interference. A VPN or browser extension may block the connection. Test with the VPN paused or extensions disabled, then restore them one at a time if the page works.
- Check battery restrictions. Battery optimization may restrict Google Messages in the background. Review the phone’s battery settings if the connection drops when the app is not open.
- Separate web issues from delivery issues. If the browser is connected but a message will not send, the problem may be the carrier connection or SMS service rather than browser pairing. Messages for web does not replace the phone’s carrier messaging connection.
QR-code instructions and regional differences
For users in the United States, Google’s current Messages help says QR-code pairing is no longer available; use Google Account pairing and emoji confirmation instead. Some Google documentation, including its general Android instructions, still describes QR pairing, and instructions may differ by region, account rollout, or interface version. If a QR prompt appears, follow the pairing options actually offered for your account and location rather than treating QR scanning as the standard US method. Privacy and encryption
A paired browser can display personal conversations, authentication codes, addresses, and other sensitive information. Do not leave it signed in on a shared, work, hotel, or library computer; unpair when you finish on a temporary device.
Google says the browser may cache encrypted conversation data and settings, so unpairing is especially important on a computer other people can access. That statement does not mean every message is end-to-end encrypted. Google’s end-to-end encryption applies to qualifying RCS conversations when participants use Google Messages with RCS enabled; ordinary SMS and MMS are not covered by that protection. Why did pairing stop after I changed phones?
A replacement or reset phone can leave an old device session behind. Unpair the old session if possible, then update Google Messages on the new phone, sign in to the intended Google Account, and pair again.
