Google Flow is an AI filmmaking workspace for generating video and images, reusing visual references, and assembling clips into scenes. To make a first project, open Flow in a desktop Chromium-based browser, sign in, confirm that your account is eligible, choose a model, check its credit cost, and generate a few short shots rather than trying to make an entire film in one prompt. Access, plans, models, and controls change, so check what your own account currently offers.
What is Google Flow?
Flow is Google’s AI creative studio for developing and generating video, creating images, reusing visual references, and organizing clips into a larger sequence. It is more than a text-to-video prompt box: its workflow is designed to move from an idea to shots and then to an assembled scene. Google announced Flow on May 20, 2025, initially describing a filmmaking tool built around Veo, Imagen, and Gemini, with features such as camera controls, Scenebuilder, and asset management. The product has since changed; the current Flow page identifies Veo 3.1, Gemini Omni, and Nano Banana among its model families. Google’s launch announcement is historical context, not a reliable guide to every current menu or plan.
Flow is distinct from video generation inside Gemini: the products can have different controls, limits, and access rules. It is also not a full replacement for a conventional video editor. Flow can help generate and organize source material; precise timeline editing, multi-track audio, captions, color work, and final delivery may still be easier in a separate editor.

Google’s Flow product page currently displays a free option with 50 daily credits, alongside Google AI Plus, Pro, and Ultra plans. However, Google’s Help documentation also says users need to be at least 18, in a supported region, and subscribed to Google AI Plus, Pro, or Ultra. Those pages do not present a universally consistent access rule. Availability may reflect region, account eligibility, or a staged rollout, so do not assume either that Flow is free for everyone or that a paid plan is always required. Open the product page while signed in and check the access and pricing shown for your account.

As displayed on Google’s Flow page on August 18, 2026, plan examples were Free with 50 daily credits; Google AI Plus at $4.99/month with 200 monthly credits; Pro at $19.99/month with 1,000; and Ultra at $99.99/month with 10,000 or $199.99/month with 25,000. Google notes that prices vary by market, and the displayed figures and allowances can change. Treat them as a dated snapshot, not a quote for every country. See the live Flow page and Google AI plans before deciding whether to pay.
Credits are not a simple count of finished videos. The cost depends on the model, duration, quality, and feature, and the interface displays the applicable cost when you choose a generation. Google says failed generations should not consume credits, but check your balance and the current credit guidance if a charge looks wrong. A subscription’s monthly allowance may also be a poor fit if you need predictable per-minute pricing or a large number of revisions.
What you need before using Flow
- A Google account and, under Google’s Help guidance, age eligibility of 18 or older.
- Access from a supported country or territory. Google warns that Flow may not be offered everywhere Google AI plans are sold; a VPN will not make an unsupported region eligible.
- A desktop or laptop with Chrome or another Chromium-based browser. Google says Flow is best experienced on desktop with a Chromium-based browser.
- A plan or free access option that is actually available to your account. Features can vary by plan, platform, and region.
Check Google’s current access and eligibility help if the site denies access. A paid Google AI plan by itself does not guarantee that Flow is enabled in your country or for your account.

- On a desktop browser, visit labs.google/fx/tools/flow.
- Sign in to the Google account you intend to use for the project.
- Review any age, regional, and plan eligibility prompts. Choose the current entry point, such as Get started or Create.
- Start a project or generation, then inspect the model picker and the credit cost shown in the interface before submitting.
If Flow is unavailable, first check country support, account and age verification, and the plan or rollout status. Then try a current desktop Chromium browser. Browser troubleshooting cannot resolve a region or account eligibility restriction.
Make a small first video
Start with a single clear shot, then build a short sequence from separate clips. A first project is easier to control if it has one subject, one location, one action, and one camera move. Aim for a few shots of roughly four to eight seconds each, where the selected model offers those durations. A generation is generally a shot, not a finished film.
For example, begin with this prompt:
A small red canoe drifts through a misty mountain lake at sunrise. Slow aerial tracking shot, cinematic natural lighting, gentle ripples and realistic water movement. No text or logos.

- Choose the model that fits your goal and budget. The exact labels and available options may vary; see the model guidance below.
- Write one shot-specific prompt. Describe what happens in this shot rather than narrating an entire story.
- Check the credit cost displayed for the selected model and feature.
- Generate a test or a small number of variations, then compare them. If the subject, framing, or motion is wrong, adjust one or two prompt details rather than rewriting everything at once.
- Keep successful clips for assembly. Generate additional shots for the same story instead of asking one generation to cover multiple scenes.
How to write a useful Flow prompt
Google’s prompting advice recommends specifying the subject and action, composition, camera movement, location, lighting, visual style, and—when supported—audio or dialogue. A practical starting template is:
[Shot type and subject] + [action] + [location] + [time/lighting] + [camera movement] + [visual style] + [motion details] + + [constraints]For example:
Medium tracking shot of a tired astronaut walking through a flooded subway station. Blue emergency lights reflect across the water. The camera moves backward smoothly at chest height. Realistic cinematic science-fiction style, shallow depth of field, subtle drifting steam, restrained movement, no subtitles, no logos.
Think of the prompt in layers:
- Narrative intent: What happens in the shot?
- Visual direction: What should be visible, and where is the subject in the frame?
- Camera direction: Is the camera static, tracking, panning, or moving in another way?
- Look and motion: What lighting, style, and movement should shape the result?
- Constraints: What should be absent, such as logos or on-screen text?
- Audio direction: If the selected model supports it, what ambience, effects, speech, or delivery do you want?
These are useful directions, not guaranteed controls. Video generation is probabilistic; too many requirements can compete with one another. Keep the central action clear, generate a test, and refine based on what the model actually produced. For reliable titles, subtitles, or brand text, add typography in an editor rather than depending on a moving generated image to render it accurately.
Use references to improve consistency
Flow’s reference or “ingredients” workflows let you reuse visual material such as a character, prop, location, vehicle, clothing, or style. You may be able to create a reference from a prompt or upload an image, then attach it to later generations. Google’s June 2025 guide described up to three ingredients per prompt in that workflow, but that is a historical limit, not a universal current rule. The number and type of references supported depend on the current model and interface; consult Google’s model capability table.
For a recurring character or object:
- Create or upload a clear reference image and give it a descriptive name.
- Use the same reference in each related shot where the selected model allows it.
- Repeat important stable details in the prompt—such as clothing, hairstyle, silhouette, or color—rather than relying on a pronoun or an earlier generation alone.
- Keep the model and visual style consistent where possible. Test the reference as a still or low-cost image before using credits on video.
- Change one variable at a time when a shot needs a new angle or action.
References can improve continuity; they cannot guarantee an identical face, outfit, proportion, or movement from shot to shot. Different lighting, angles, models, and simultaneous prompt changes can all alter the result.
Frames to Video and image references
When the selected workflow supports it, a starting frame can establish a shot’s composition. Upload an image or choose a frame from prior work, then describe the motion that should follow. Some workflows also support later frames or transitions, but frame controls and reference behavior vary by model. Google’s Flow video tips introduced Frames to Video as a way to set a starting frame and create a transition. Before planning a project around first-frame, last-frame, extension, or ingredient controls, confirm that the active model supports the feature in the current capability table.

Which Flow model should you choose?
There is no single best model for every beginner. Use the model picker and capability table to match the task; labels, durations, and controls can change. Google’s current documentation lists Veo 3.1 Lite, Fast, and Quality, as well as Gemini Omni Flash, with different support for text-to-video, frames, ingredients, editing, extension, duration, and aspect ratio.

Google’s current model documentation gives examples including Veo 3.1 Lite text-to-video clips of 4, 6, or 8 seconds, and additional options—including 10-second clips in some workflows—for Veo 3.1 Fast and Quality. Ingredients, video extension, aspect ratio, and other capabilities are model-dependent. Google also documents that all Veo 3.1 8-second videos can reportedly be extended using Veo 3.1 Lite, subject to current rules. Treat these as changeable capability details and verify them in the live model table before relying on them.
Flow may switch to a compatible model if the feature you choose is not supported by the one currently selected. Inspect the model picker again after selecting a feature and before generating, particularly if credits or output duration matter.

A clip is one generated segment. A scene is a sequence of related clips arranged to tell a short story. A project is the broader workspace for prompts, assets, images, videos, and scene work. Google originally described Scenebuilder as a place to assemble clips, extend shots, and preserve continuity; the current interface and available controls may differ.
- Write a one-sentence story and turn it into a short shot list.
- Create a reference for any character or object that recurs.
- Generate an establishing shot, then separate action and reaction shots.
- Where supported, reuse a reference or prior frame to connect related shots.
- Add chosen clips to the scene-building workspace and arrange them in story order.
- Try extension only if the source clip and active model meet the current requirements.
- Review pacing and remove shots that repeat information or do not move the story forward.
- Download or export where available. Use a conventional editor for exact trimming, titles, sound, captions, or other finishing work.
Google’s 2025 guide also covered tools such as Jump To and Extend. Do not assume a tutorial’s button, feature, or model requirement still applies: check current controls and model compatibility before building a workflow around them.
Other tools in Flow
The current Flow page lists additional creative tools including Type Overlays, Video Resizer, Image Editor, Storyboard Studio, Shader Effects, Mockup, Ribbit, Converge, Character X-ray, Grid Architect, and Scout360. Google describes Storyboard Studio as a way to write a script, create a cast, and visualize a storyboard; Type Overlays adds animated text; Video Resizer changes aspect ratio; and Image Editor offers layer-based image editing. These tools are not necessarily available uniformly: Google says features vary by subscription tier, platform, and region.

Save credits and avoid wasted generations
The main cost driver is often iteration: many attempts may be needed to get a usable shot. Before submitting, check the exact cost shown for the chosen model and feature. A disciplined beginner workflow is:

- Draft and revise prompts before generating.
- Test the composition with a still image or lower-cost model where available.
- Settle the subject, setting, and camera intention before making variations.
- Generate only a few video candidates at first.
- Use a higher-quality option for final candidates rather than every experiment.
- Check the current credit cost each time; do not assume a fixed number of credits buys one video.
Try the free option first if it is available to your account. Consider upgrading only after completing a small project and seeing whether the allowance, output options, or model access is genuinely limiting your work. Check plan terms and current credit rules for expiration, top-ups, and other conditions rather than assuming unused credits roll over.
Common problems and fixes
“I have Google AI Pro, but Flow is unavailable.”
Check that your country is supported for Flow specifically, that your Google account and age verification meet requirements, and that the feature has rolled out to your account. Flow is not available in every country where Google AI Pro is offered, and Google says a VPN will not enable access in unsupported regions. Try a desktop Chromium browser only after checking eligibility.
“The model changed by itself.”
Some features only work with particular models, and Flow may switch to a compatible one. Recheck the model picker after selecting a feature, then check the cost and duration before submitting.
“My character looks different in every shot.”
Create a clean reference image, reuse it where supported, repeat the character’s stable visual details, and keep the model and style consistent. Avoid changing clothing, age, hair, silhouette, and camera angle all at once. Generate a still to test the setup before spending credits on another video. Even with these steps, exact continuity is not guaranteed.
“The dialogue or sound is missing.”
Not every model supports native audio, and generated speech or sound can be unreliable. If speech is supported, shorten the line and describe the tone and delivery. Google’s 2025 guidance described audio and dialogue as experimental and noted that speech may be less likely when it does not fit in the clip. For dependable narration, voiceover, music, or detailed mixing, add audio separately in an editor.

“Ingredients, frames, or Extend is missing.”
The active model may not support the feature, or the source clip, account, region, or interface may not meet its requirements. Check the live capability table and the feature’s current controls instead of following an old screenshot.
“The result has unwanted text, logos, or visual artifacts.”
Add simple constraints such as “no text, no logos,” try a cleaner reference image, and generate a few variations. Avoid relying on generated video for accurate long-form text; add titles and captions afterward. Crop or mask a distracting area in an editor if appropriate.
“My output is too short.”
Plan a longer story as multiple shots and assemble them. Use extension only when the selected model supports it and the source meets the current rules. A single generation is not a reliable substitute for a full scene or film.

When Flow may not be the right tool
Flow is a reasonable place to explore generated shots, references, and scene ideas if it is available to your account. It may not suit you if you need guaranteed character continuity, predictable per-minute costs, precise timeline controls, mature team review, or dependable native voice and music. Runway, Adobe Firefly, OpenAI Sora, and Luma Dream Machine are other AI video services to investigate; availability, features, terms, and pricing vary, so compare their current offerings rather than assuming one is universally better. For post-production, DaVinci Resolve and Adobe Premiere Pro are conventional editing options for assembling exports, refining audio, adding captions, and finishing delivery.
Before choosing a paid service, compare monthly cost, credits and their expiration rules, model access, audio support, reference controls, resolution and export restrictions, commercial-use terms, and regional availability. Check the relevant service’s current terms before using generated material commercially.
