Google Fi works on most unlocked iPhones running iOS 13 or later. For 5G, Google requires an iPhone 12 or newer with current iOS. Set up or move your Fi line with the Google Fi Wireless app—not Apple’s eSIM Quick Transfer. One important limitation: Google Fi does not support cellular service for Apple Watch.

This guide covers compatibility, activation, number transfers, iPhone settings, plan choices, and common fixes. It applies primarily to service in the United States; international features depend on your plan and destination.

Before you start

  • An unlocked, compatible iPhone: Check the exact model with Google Fi’s compatibility checker. Compatibility can vary by model and some phones work with limitations.
  • iOS 13 or later: Update to the latest iOS version available for your iPhone if possible. Google says iPhone 12 or newer is required for Fi 5G coverage.
  • Wi-Fi: Keep the iPhone connected during app and eSIM setup.
  • The right Google Account: Use the account associated with your Fi service, or the account you intend to use when signing up.
  • Number-transfer details, if needed: Have your old carrier account number and transfer PIN ready. Keep the old SIM or eSIM active until Fi service and the number transfer are confirmed.

To check whether your iPhone is unlocked, open Settings > General > About and look for Carrier Lock. “No SIM restrictions” means the phone is unlocked. If it is locked, contact the carrier that locked it and ask about its unlocking requirements. Paying off a phone does not necessarily unlock it immediately; the carrier’s rules apply.

Google’s current setup instructions are on its iPhone activation help page.

Choose eSIM or physical SIM

Use eSIM if your iPhone supports it and you want to activate without waiting for a SIM card. Google’s current guidance supports eSIM setup on iPhone XS or newer. You need Wi-Fi to download the profile.

Use a physical SIM if your iPhone does not support eSIM, or if you need a straightforward alternative after eSIM setup fails. Google directs owners of eSIM-incompatible iPhones to order a physical Fi SIM and activate it in the Fi app. Check model compatibility before ordering.

Activate Google Fi with eSIM

  1. Confirm that your iPhone is unlocked and passes Google’s compatibility check.
  2. Connect to Wi-Fi and install Google Fi Wireless from the App Store.
  3. Open the app and sign in to the Google Account connected to your Fi service. If you are new to Fi, follow the prompts to sign up and choose a number or begin a transfer.
  4. Follow the app’s compatibility and setup prompts to download the Fi eSIM and finish configuring service.
  5. Leave the previous carrier line in place if you are porting your number. Wait until the transfer completes and you have verified Fi service before removing or cancelling that line.
  6. Restart the iPhone if the app asks you to. Allow a few minutes for service to connect; Google says it can take about 5–20 minutes after setup.
  7. Turn Wi-Fi off and test a call, an SMS, and a webpage over cellular data.

Setting up a new iPhone? If Apple’s setup assistant offers to transfer your carrier eSIM from a nearby iPhone, skip that carrier-transfer step for Fi. Google says Fi eSIMs cannot be transferred between iPhones through Apple Settings; use the Google Fi app instead. See Google’s transfer instructions.

Google says manual APN or MMS entry is not required for normal iPhone activation. Don’t change APN settings unless Fi support specifically directs you to.

Activate with a physical SIM

  1. Order a Google Fi SIM if your iPhone needs one.
  2. Insert the SIM into the iPhone.
  3. Connect to Wi-Fi, install or open the Google Fi Wireless app, and sign in to the correct Google Account.
  4. Follow the in-app instructions to activate the line and complete connectivity setup.
  5. Restart if prompted, then test calls, texts, and mobile data with Wi-Fi turned off.

Move an existing Fi line to a new iPhone

Install the Fi app on the new iPhone and complete the transfer there. Do not use Settings > Cellular or Apple’s nearby-iPhone Quick Transfer to move the Fi eSIM. If the transfer is stuck or the phones have no connectivity, Google’s recovery steps include removing the existing Google Fi eSIM profile or profiles, deleting and reinstalling the Fi app, then following the app’s setup again. Only remove a Fi profile as part of those recovery instructions; don’t delete your old carrier’s line while a number port is pending.

Google’s steps can differ with iOS version. For iOS 17.3 or earlier, its transfer guidance may require reopening the QR-code instructions and scanning a newly provided code. Follow the prompts for your software version rather than reusing an old QR code.

Check that your iPhone is using Fi

Once activation is complete, verify the basics:

  • Cellular line: Open Settings > Cellular and confirm the Fi line is turned on.
  • Mobile data: If you have more than one line, make sure Fi is selected as the cellular-data line. Turn Wi-Fi off and load a webpage.
  • Calls and SMS: Make a call and send a plain SMS to someone who does not use iMessage. If you kept two lines, check which line is selected for calls and messages.
  • 5G: An iPhone 12 or newer is required by Google for Fi 5G coverage. The 5G indicator also depends on your iOS version, location, coverage, signal, and device settings.
  • Voicemail: Check Phone > Voicemail. The interface and availability of visual voicemail can vary by iPhone and software version; follow Fi’s voicemail instructions if the tab does not provide what you need.
  • Hotspot: Test Personal Hotspot if your plan and account include it. Allowances and availability depend on plan terms.

iMessage, RCS, and Wi-Fi calling

If you brought your existing number to Fi, wait for calls and SMS on Fi to work before adjusting iMessage. Then check Settings > Apps > Messages > Send & Receive and make sure your phone number is selected. Menu labels can vary by iOS release. If messages keep going to an email address or the old line, restart iMessage after the port completes.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

RCS depends on iOS, Google Fi, and the recipient’s carrier or platform, so do not assume it will behave identically in every conversation. Google says RCS messages use data; on an unlimited plan, they do not create a separate data charge.

  • This phone is unlocked and compatible with any carrier of choice on GSM and CDMA networks (e.g. AT&T, T-Mobile, Sprint, Verizon, US Cellular, Cricket, Metro, Tracfone, Mint Mobile, etc.).
  • Please check with your carrier to verify compatibility.
  • When you receive the phone, insert a SIM card from a compatible carrier. Then, turn it on, connect to Wi-Fi, and follow the on screen prompts to activate service.
  • The device does not come with headphones or a SIM card. It does include a generic (Mfi certified) charger and charging cable.
  • Tested for battery health and guaranteed to have a minimum battery capacity of 80%.

Fi supports calling over Wi-Fi in supported circumstances, but the exact controls and behavior can vary by device, software version, and region. Check the iPhone’s calling settings and Fi guidance rather than assuming every model presents the same controls.

Use Google Fi while traveling

International service depends on your Fi plan, destination, and account eligibility. Before a trip, confirm that your plan covers the destination and check Google’s international destinations and rates and international setup guide. Do not assume every plan includes overseas data or the same calling rates.

On a dual-SIM iPhone, open Settings > Cellular and review which line is used for cellular data and which line handles calls. Enable data roaming for Fi only when required by your plan and destination. If you want to avoid roaming charges on another line, disable roaming for that line. Apple notes that charges can apply when using multiple cellular plans, especially while traveling. A local or travel data eSIM is another option if it better fits your destination or expected usage.

Plan One-line price observed Best fit Key trade-off
Flexible $20/month plus $10/GB Light data users who mostly use Wi-Fi or want data billed by use Regular cellular data use can make it cost more than an unlimited plan.
Unlimited Essentials $35/month Domestic users seeking the lowest-cost unlimited option Google lists 30 GB of high-speed data per person before speeds are reduced to 256 kbps; it is not aimed at broad international use or included hotspot data.
Unlimited Standard $50/month People who need hotspot data or travel to Canada and Mexico Includes 25 GB of high-speed hotspot data; broader international data benefits are associated with Premium.
Unlimited Premium $65/month Frequent international travelers or heavier hotspot users Includes 100 GB of high-speed data per person and 50 GB of hotspot data, but can be unnecessary for a light domestic user. It still does not add Apple Watch cellular service.

Flexible may suit someone using very little data, but compare the likely monthly data bill with unlimited pricing. Essentials is mainly a domestic option. Standard adds hotspot and Canada/Mexico benefits, while Premium is the plan to examine for broader international data in more than 200 destinations. Read current plan terms for the exact allowances, destinations, and restrictions that matter to you.

What is limited or unavailable on iPhone?

  • Cellular Apple Watch service: Google says Apple Watch is not compatible with Fi Wireless. An iPhone can use Fi, but a cellular Apple Watch paired to it cannot get standalone Fi cellular service. If that is essential, compare carriers that officially support Apple Watch.
  • Not every Fi feature is identical to Android: iPhone compatibility does not mean feature parity with phones designed for Fi. Google’s compatibility checker distinguishes devices that work with limitations, including possible loss of features such as intelligent network switching. Check your exact model’s result.
  • Fi eSIM transfers use the Fi app: Apple’s usual carrier-transfer flow is not supported for moving a Fi eSIM between iPhones.
  • Voicemail and calling controls may differ: Don’t assume every Fi Android feature or interface appears the same on every iPhone.

Troubleshoot common Google Fi problems on iPhone

“This iPhone isn’t compatible”

Update iOS, verify Settings > General > About > Carrier Lock shows “No SIM restrictions,” and check the exact model with Google’s compatibility help. A regional model, carrier lock, or limitation on that device can prevent setup. If the checker says the phone is compatible but activation still fails, try again on reliable Wi-Fi and contact Fi support.

The eSIM will not download or activate

  • Confirm the Wi-Fi connection works and you are signed in to the Google Account associated with the Fi line.
  • Use the Fi app’s current instructions; do not repeatedly scan an old QR code.
  • If Fi’s recovery instructions call for removing a failed Fi eSIM, remove that profile, reinstall the Fi app, and retry setup. Do not remove unrelated carrier profiles.
  • For iOS 17.3 or earlier, reload the QR-code setup instructions if prompted and scan the newly provided code.
  • Restart the iPhone after setup and allow up to about 20 minutes for connection.

Fi appears active, but mobile data does not work

  1. Open Settings > Cellular and make sure the Fi line is on.
  2. If you have multiple lines, select Fi for cellular data.
  3. Turn Wi-Fi off and try a webpage, then restart the phone.
  4. Do not manually edit APN settings as a routine fix; Google says manual APN and MMS setup is not needed for normal activation.

Calls work, but texts do not

A number port can finish in stages: voice and data may work before SMS. Test a plain SMS, check the selected line, and confirm your number is selected under iMessage’s Send & Receive settings. Restart the iPhone once the port is complete. If SMS still fails 24 hours after activation, contact Fi support.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The number transfer is taking longer than expected

Google says mobile and Google Voice numbers usually transfer within the first three hours; landline transfers can take up to two business days. SMS may take up to 24 hours to start working after a transfer. These are different milestones, not a promise that every port completes within a fixed time. Keep the old carrier line active until the transfer is confirmed.

The new iPhone cannot receive the Fi eSIM from the old iPhone

This is expected: Apple Settings-based eSIM transfer is not the Fi transfer method. Install the Google Fi app on the new iPhone and follow its transfer flow.

I activated using the wrong Google Account

Google’s recovery instructions say to open Settings > Cellular, select the incorrect Fi plan, tap Remove Cellular Plan, and delete that incorrect eSIM. Then sign in to the correct Google Account and follow Fi’s setup instructions; scan a new QR code if Fi provides one. Be careful not to remove a different carrier’s line.

Is Google Fi a good fit for an iPhone?

Fi is worth considering if your iPhone is unlocked and compatible, you want to reuse it, and the plan’s billing or international benefits match how you use your phone. It is a poor fit if cellular Apple Watch service is essential, you need a specific Fi Android feature, or your iPhone cannot be unlocked. Check compatibility and current plan terms before moving your number.
