Google Docs’ desktop editor on Windows 10 has no built-in dark-mode switch. Windows or Chrome dark mode may change the surrounding interface, but neither reliably darkens the document page. For a darker Docs canvas, the most targeted workaround is a browser extension; Chrome’s experimental forced-dark flag is a less predictable option. The steps below distinguish those display changes from changing a document’s actual formatting.
Does Google Docs have dark mode on Windows 10?
As of August 18, 2026, Google Docs in a desktop browser does not offer a native dark-theme control. Google’s Docs formatting help explains how to change text and background colors, but that is document formatting, not a personal viewing theme.
It helps to separate three things that are often called “dark mode”:
- Browser controls: The toolbar, menus, and other browser surfaces can be dark while the Docs page remains white.
- Docs display: An extension or browser rendering feature can recolor the editor for your screen.
- Document formatting: Changing page and text colors modifies the file and may affect collaborators, exports, and printing.
Google’s mobile Docs apps are different: Google documented dark themes for Android and iOS. Those mobile settings do not appear in the Windows desktop editor.

Best targeted option: a Google Docs dark-mode extension
A Docs-specific extension is usually the best fit if you want a dark page in Google Docs without applying dark styling to every website. One Chrome Web Store example is DocsAfterDark. Its listing describes dark and light modes, background customization, multiple rendering modes, and a temporary document-level toggle. Availability and behavior can change, and the listing currently targets Docs rather than all Workspace apps.
- In Chrome, open the Chrome Web Store and search for DocsAfterDark, or open its listing directly.
- Before installing, check the publisher, permissions, privacy information, reviews, and update history. An extension that works on Docs may be able to access page content; install only software you trust.
- Select Add to Chrome and confirm the prompt.
- Open or refresh Google Docs, then select the extension icon and choose a dark mode or adjust its settings.
- If the extension provides a document-level toggle, use it to turn the effect off temporarily for a particular file.
The intended effect is to change how the page appears on your screen, not to reformat the underlying document. Do not treat that as a guarantee for every extension or future version: try it first on a test document, then check the actual document formatting before relying on it for important work. If an image, highlight, link, chart, or table color looks wrong, switch the effect off while editing that material.

A school or workplace administrator may block extensions. Do not try to bypass that restriction; use approved accessibility settings or ask the administrator whether an approved tool is available.
For dark mode on many sites: use a browser-wide extension
A tool such as Dark Reader may suit you better if you want dark styling across websites, not just Docs. Install it from the browser’s official extension store or its vendor’s site, open Docs, and turn it on. If the document becomes hard to read, use the extension’s site-specific controls or disable it for Docs.

The trade-off is scope. A browser-wide extension can alter colors on many pages and may transform images, drawings, charts, comments, highlights, or other document colors. It is a less suitable choice if you need color fidelity, use a managed or privacy-sensitive computer, or only want Docs darkened.
No-extension fallback: try Chrome’s forced-dark flag
Chrome may provide an experimental feature called Auto Dark Mode for Web Contents. The exact label or availability depends on the Chrome version, and a flag can be changed or removed. Treat this as a temporary experiment—not a supported Google Docs theme.

chrome://flagsin Chrome’s address bar. - Search for
Auto Dark Mode for Web Contents. If it is listed, set it to Enabled. - Select Relaunch, then reopen Docs and check the result.
This can affect many websites, not only Docs, and its color conversion may make text, icons, images, or document colors look wrong. It may also make a document appear different from how collaborators see it. If the flag is missing, do not assume there is a problem with your installation; it may not be available in that release.

To undo it: Return to chrome://flags, search for the same setting, select Default or Disabled, and relaunch Chrome.

Chrome’s regular dark appearance is not the same setting. Google’s Chrome dark-mode help describes changes to Chrome’s appearance and some pages; it does not promise a dark Google Docs canvas.

To change Windows’ supported interface colors, open Start > Settings > Personalization > Colors and choose Dark if that option is available in your Windows 10 build. Depending on the build, the choices may distinguish Windows mode from app mode. This can darken supported system components and applications, but it does not reliably darken the Google Docs editing page.
Night light warms the display rather than making Docs dark, and lowering screen brightness reduces glare without changing page colors. Windows high-contrast settings can help some readers but may substantially change colors or interact poorly with dark-mode extensions. Google’s Docs accessibility guidance covers Windows contrast controls, Magnifier, and other accessibility features; dark mode is not a substitute for them.
Changing the document itself is not a viewing-only dark mode
Google Docs lets you change document text and background colors. For a genuinely dark document design, use the page-setup controls to choose a dark page color, then select the text and set a light text color. Google explains its available color controls in Docs Editors Help.
That changes the file, not just your display. Collaborators may see the same formatting, and it can affect templates, links, tables, images, print previews, and exports. Use this approach only when you intend the document to have dark formatting. Check print preview or the exported file before sharing; a dark-looking screen under an extension does not mean the file itself has a dark background.

If Docs is still white or looks broken
- Only menus or browser controls are dark: That is expected when the browser theme changes but the page content does not. Try a Docs-specific extension instead.
- The page stays white after installing an extension: Refresh Docs and check the extension’s toolbar control and settings. Confirm it is enabled for the site and that the extension is allowed to run in the current browser profile.
- Colors, images, or icons look wrong: Turn off the dark rendering for color-sensitive editing, or adjust the extension’s site-specific settings. Do not use a color-transforming view as the final check for a design or print-ready document.
- Two tools are fighting each other: Disable other dark-mode extensions or reset the Chrome flag, then refresh. Test one method at a time.
- The Chrome flag is absent or ineffective: It is version-dependent and experimental. Use an extension if permitted, or rely on Windows brightness and accessibility options.
- An extension is blocked: Follow the organization’s policy. Ask about an approved accessibility tool rather than trying to evade browser restrictions.
