Firefox Picture-in-Picture (PiP) detaches a supported video from its webpage into a floating player, so you can keep watching while switching tabs or applications. It is built into Firefox desktop; you do not need Firefox Nightly to use it. Nightly is an early-development channel where PiP changes may appear sooner—and where temporary bugs and interface changes are more likely.
To open PiP, click the video’s hover button, choose Picture-in-Picture from its right-click menu, use the address-bar PiP button when available, or press Ctrl + Shift + ] on Windows or Linux, or Command + Shift + Option + ] on macOS.
What Firefox PiP does—and what you need
PiP opens a separate floating playback window for a video on a webpage. It is not a download or an offline copy. The player includes playback controls, and Firefox can open more than one PiP window, subject to the site and system. The window can usually be moved and resized; whether it stays above every other application can depend on your operating system and window manager. Mozilla describes the feature in its Firefox Picture-in-Picture guide.
These instructions apply to Firefox on desktop. They are not instructions for Firefox on Android or iOS. PiP generally requires a compatible HTML5 video. The hover toggle may not appear for videos that are muted, lack an audio track, or are shorter than about 45 seconds, and a site can use a player that limits or excludes PiP. DRM-protected playback may also behave differently depending on the service, operating system, Firefox build, and playback implementation. The video must be out of full-screen mode for the right-click menu method.

Open a video in PiP
Use the hover button
- Open a page with a video and start playback if the site requires it.
- Move the pointer over the video. Look for Firefox’s PiP button, usually overlaid near a player edge.
- Click the button. The video should open in a floating window.
If the toggle is on the inconvenient side, right-click the PiP button and choose Move Picture-in-Picture Toggle to Left Side or the corresponding right-side option. The hover button may not appear while the video is full-screen.
Use the video’s right-click menu
- Exit full-screen mode, if the video is in it.
- Right-click the video.
- Select Picture-in-Picture.
Some sites replace Firefox’s normal context menu with their own. If you do not see the PiP option, try holding Shift while right-clicking or double-right-clicking. You can also use the hover button or keyboard shortcut instead.
Use the address-bar button
When Firefox detects a page with a single video, it may show a PiP icon on the right side of the address bar. Click it to open the video. Mozilla says this launch method was introduced in Firefox 116. The button is not expected on pages with multiple videos or no detectable video, and its visibility can vary with Firefox version, language, platform, and interface configuration. If it is absent, try another launch method.

Use the keyboard shortcut

Firefox tries to choose the most relevant video on the page. If that video is already in PiP, the shortcut can close its PiP window. The shortcut may work while a video is full-screen, unlike the right-click method. These shortcuts follow Mozilla’s support documentation checked on August 18, 2026; behavior can change in later builds.
Control the PiP window
- Play or pause: Use the playback control or press Space.
- Mute or adjust volume: Use the player controls or the shortcuts below.
- Seek: Use the seek controls or the arrow-key shortcuts below.
- Move or resize: Drag the window to reposition it; drag an edge or corner to resize it.
- Return to the page: Use the control for returning to the original tab or webpage.
- Full-screen: Double-click the video or press F to enter or exit full-screen.
- Close: Use the close control. To close without pausing, Shift-click Close or press Shift + Esc.
Closing PiP, returning to the original tab, and closing without pausing are different actions. Use the return control when you want to resume viewing the video in its webpage. Shift-click Close or Shift + Esc closes PiP without pausing, where supported. The keyboard shortcuts below reflect Mozilla support documentation checked on August 18, 2026.

Show captions in PiP
Turn captions or subtitles on in the webpage’s player before launching PiP, then check whether they appear in the floating window. Mozilla documents caption support for some services and for sites using WebVTT, but support is not universal. Captions visible on the webpage do not necessarily transfer to PiP; if they are missing, try another video with a supported caption format.

Show or hide Firefox’s PiP controls
Firefox’s setting labels and location can differ between versions and localizations. Mozilla’s current controls guide, updated in August 2026, shows this path:

- Select Tabs and browsing.
- Scroll to Media and toggle Use Picture-in-Picture.
Some builds or interface versions instead show Settings > General > Browsing > Enable picture-in-picture video controls. Hiding the hover controls does not necessarily turn off PiP itself; right-clicking a video may still open it. Re-enable the setting if you want the overlay back. The hover button is missing
Check these in order:
- Exit full-screen mode.
- Check whether the video is muted, has an audio track, and is longer than about 45 seconds.
- Confirm PiP controls are enabled in Firefox Settings.
- Try the video’s context menu, the address-bar button, or the keyboard shortcut.
- Test another video or site. If PiP works there, the original player or site may be the limiting factor.
Short or muted videos may not show the hover toggle even when other PiP launch methods are available.

The right-click menu has no PiP option
A site may replace Firefox’s context menu, or the player may be custom, protected, or incompatible. Exit full-screen, then try Shift-right-click or double-right-click to expose Firefox’s native menu. If that fails, use the hover button or shortcut.
PiP works on one site but not another
That points to a site or player difference, not necessarily a browser-wide fault. Mozilla’s implementation includes site-specific wrappers because websites can change their players and controls. Custom playback, DRM, login requirements, or a site update can affect compatibility. Compare another video before changing browser settings.

- Restart or update Firefox and test the same video again.
- Try the video in regular Firefox if the problem occurs in Nightly, and test a different site.
- Temporarily disable extensions that modify video, privacy, or content filtering, then retest. This is a diagnostic step, not a guaranteed fix.
- Note whether the service uses DRM or whether the issue involves hardware acceleration; do not assume either is the cause.
- If the problem is reproducible only in Nightly, report the Firefox version, operating system, site, video URL, and steps that trigger it.
Inspect PiP preferences only as a last resort
about:config is an advanced configuration editor. A preference’s name or behavior can change in Nightly, so do not change several values blindly. Record the current value first, and use the reset button beside a modified preference to restore its default if needed.

- Type
about:configin the address bar and accept the warning. - Search for
media.videocontrols.picture-in-picture. - Review relevant preferences, such as
media.videocontrols.picture-in-picture.enabled,media.videocontrols.picture-in-picture.video-toggle.enabled, andmedia.videocontrols.picture-in-picture.urlbar-button.enabled. - Reset only a preference you know was changed and that relates to the symptom. Mozilla explains the editor in its about:config guide.
What Firefox Nightly changes
Firefox Nightly is Mozilla’s early-development desktop channel. It can receive experimental PiP changes, site-specific wrapper updates, and interface changes before Beta or Release, so settings and behavior may change more frequently and regressions are more likely. Mozilla’s PiP implementation documentation describes its use of site-specific wrappers and Nightly testing.
For everyday viewing, regular Firefox is the stability-oriented choice; PiP is already a standard desktop feature there. Nightly is useful if you specifically want to try earlier changes or reproduce a problem for Mozilla, not as a prerequisite for PiP.
