Excel’s TRANSLATE function converts worksheet text through Microsoft Translation Services. In a supported Microsoft 365, web, Mac, or mobile installation, enter =TRANSLATE(A2,"en","es") to translate the text in A2 from English to Spanish. You can fill the formula down a column, detect an unknown source language, and convert finished results to fixed values.
What Excel’s TRANSLATE function does
TRANSLATE is a worksheet function, not the same as the older Review > Translate command. It accepts text, an optional source-language code, and an optional target-language code, then returns a machine translation. Because it calls Microsoft Translation Services, it is not an offline translation engine; availability, supported languages, and results can change as Microsoft updates the service. Microsoft lists the function for Excel for Microsoft 365, Excel for Microsoft 365 for Mac, Excel for the web, and Excel Mobile. The documentation does not list perpetual desktop editions such as Excel 2016, 2019, 2021, or 2024 as supported products. To perform a practical check, open a blank sheet and type =TRANSLATE(. If formula autocomplete recognizes the name, the installation likely supports it. A #NAME? result means you should check the edition, updates, account, and workbook environment.

Syntax and arguments

Language codes must be text, so put them in quotation marks unless they come from cells or named ranges. Common examples include en (English), es (Spanish), fr (French), de (German), it (Italian), pt (Portuguese), ja (Japanese), ko (Korean), zh-Hans (Simplified Chinese), and zh-Hant (Traditional Chinese). Use Microsoft’s current supported-language list linked from the function documentation rather than treating any copied list as permanent.
Translate one cell
Suppose A2 contains Hello, world!. In B2, enter:
=TRANSLATE(A2,"en","es")Press Enter and Excel returns the Spanish translation in B2. For literal text, include quotation marks:
=TRANSLATE("Where is the train station?","en","de")Cell references are usually better for a workbook because they can be updated, audited, and filled down.

If English text is in A2:A100 and Spanish results belong in column B:
- Enter
=TRANSLATE(A2,"en","es")in B2. - Press Enter.
- Drag or double-click B2’s fill handle to copy the formula through the list.
Each row then translates its corresponding A-cell. In an expanding dataset, you can place the range in an Excel table and add the formula to the translation column so Excel propagates the calculated column. Keep the original text column. The formula produces a dynamic result; it does not replace the source text.

When the wording is final, copy the translation column and use Paste Values (the exact ribbon location varies by platform) to store fixed text and avoid unnecessary future translation requests.
Leave source-language detection to Excel
Omit the source-language argument when the input language is unknown:

=TRANSLATE(A2,,"en")The empty argument position is intentional. In Excel installations that use semicolons as separators, use:
=TRANSLATE(A2;;"en")Excel attempts to detect the source language for most languages. Detection is less dependable for very short, ambiguous, mixed-language, misspelled, or heavily abbreviated text, so specify a known source language whenever possible—especially for short labels.
Detect first with DETECTLANGUAGE
For mixed-language data, separate detection from translation. Microsoft documents DETECTLANGUAGE at its function reference.

With source text in A2:
B2: =DETECTLANGUAGE(A2)
C2: =TRANSLATE(A2,B2,"en")B2 returns a code such as es; C2 translates the original text into English. If you already know the source language, =TRANSLATE(A2,"es","en") is simpler and more predictable.
Safer formulas for blanks and mixed data
Prevent blank rows from producing unwanted output or unnecessary service calls:
=IF(A2="","",TRANSLATE(A2,"en","es"))To show a friendly message instead of an error:
=IF(A2="","",IFERROR(TRANSLATE(A2,"en","es"),"Translation unavailable"))During troubleshooting, remove IFERROR first so you can see the actual error. The function expects text. If a cell may contain a number, explicit conversion can help:
=TRANSLATE(A2&"","en","es")This translates the displayed text representation, not the underlying value. Keep dates and numbers as real date/number fields for calculations, and translate a separate label column when needed. Avoid indiscriminately translating identifiers such as SKUs, invoice numbers, URLs, email addresses, file names, and registration numbers.
Common errors and fixes
Text Too Long
Microsoft documents a Text Too Long error but does not publish a universal character maximum on the function page. Split long material into logical sentences or paragraphs, translate the parts, and reassemble them if necessary.

Error in Value
This can occur when the input is a non-text value or already contains an error such as #N/A or #VALUE!. Check the source cell and try A2&"" to convert a number to text.
Invalid Language
Check spelling, quotation marks, and Microsoft’s current supported-code list. Use:
=TRANSLATE(A2,"en","es")not =TRANSLATE(A2,en,es), unless en and es are deliberately defined names or cell references.
Request Throttled
Microsoft says throttling occurs when the daily translation quota is exceeded, but the function page does not state a numeric quota. Avoid repeatedly recalculating large ranges, reduce unnecessary or volatile formulas, paste completed results as values, wait, and try again later. High-volume production work may need a dedicated translation service.

Possible causes include an unsupported edition, an outdated installation, a misspelled function, account or locale issues, or a workbook opened in an environment that does not recognize the function. Confirm support with a blank-sheet test and check for comma-versus-semicolon separator differences.

Important limitations and quality checks
- Connectivity:
TRANSLATEuses Microsoft Translation Services. Network access or service availability may be required; offline behavior can vary by platform and cached workbook state. - Changing language support: Microsoft can add or remove languages and change results, so use the current official list.
- Machine translation is not approval: Have qualified reviewers check contracts, legal or financial disclosures, medical and safety text, public marketing, product terminology, and culturally sensitive content.
- Protect identifiers: Keep codes, names, URLs, and numbers in separate fields where possible. Translation may alter surrounding punctuation, capitalization, or spacing.
- Control recalculation: For a finished dataset, review samples, paste results as values, and retain the original and (if useful) formula columns on a working sheet.
When an external service makes more sense
For a small spreadsheet, TRANSLATE is usually the quickest option. If your Excel edition lacks it, check Microsoft’s current Microsoft 365 plans rather than assuming a perpetual edition includes the function. Excel for the web is another supported route via office.com, although browser workflows may not suit offline, add-in-heavy, or tightly controlled environments.
For API-driven, high-volume, or operationally governed translation, consider Microsoft’s Azure AI Translator. It requires separate setup and data-governance decisions and is excessive for occasional worksheet translations. Human localization remains the safer choice when accuracy, terminology, or regulatory review matters.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is TRANSLATE available in Excel 2021 or Excel 2024 desktop?
Microsoft’s current function page lists Microsoft 365, Mac, web, and mobile products, not perpetual Excel 2021 or 2024 desktop editions. Type =TRANSLATE( in a blank sheet to check your installation.
Can I translate an entire column?
Yes. Put =TRANSLATE(A2,"en","es") in B2 and fill it down. Preserve the source column and paste values when you need fixed results.
Does Excel detect the source language?
Yes. Omit the source argument, as in =TRANSLATE(A2,,"en"), or use DETECTLANGUAGE(A2). Detection is not guaranteed for short or ambiguous text.
