On a Windows PC, click inside the text field where you want the emoji, then press Windows key + . (period). Choose an emoji from the panel, search by a word such as heart or dog, and click the result to insert it.
This guide focuses on Windows 10 and Windows 11, with instructions for Mac and Chromebook users below.
Use emojis on Windows 10 or Windows 11
- Open the document, email, chat, website, or other app where you want to type.
- Click inside an editable text field so the text cursor is visible.
- Press Windows key + . (period).
- Select the Emoji section if it is not already selected.
- Click an emoji to insert it, then continue typing or close the panel.
Microsoft documents this shortcut for both Windows 10 and Windows 11. The panel’s exact appearance and available features can vary between Windows versions and updates. See Microsoft’s Windows keyboard tips and tricks.

Search for a specific emoji
- Open the picker with Windows + ..
- Click the search field, or use the keyboard to move focus to it.
- Type a description such as smile, birthday, heart, or dog.
- Click the matching emoji to insert it.
If search produces no result, browse the categories manually. Search terms and results can depend on the Windows version and the emoji data available to the system. Microsoft also documents searching and selecting items with the keyboard in its Windows keyboard and text tools accessibility guide.
Navigate the emoji picker without a mouse
- Press Windows + ..
- Press Tab until the category, search field, or emoji results are selected.
- Use the arrow keys to move through the available choices.
- Press Enter to insert the selected item.
This is useful on a laptop, with a keyboard that has no touchpad, or when mouse-free navigation is preferable.
More than emojis: GIFs, kaomoji, symbols, and clipboard history
The Windows panel can provide several text and media tools, not just pictographs:

- Kaomoji: text-based faces such as
¯_(ツ)_/¯. - GIFs: animated images where supported by the interface and application.
- Symbols: punctuation and other special characters.
- Clipboard history: previously copied items, depending on Windows settings and version.
These tools are described in Microsoft’s accessibility documentation. They are not guaranteed to behave identically in every application.
Where Windows emojis work
The picker normally inserts an emoji into a focused text field, including an email composition window, word processor, messaging app, social-media post, web form, search box, note, or text editor. However, an application or website can handle system keyboard shortcuts and Unicode characters differently. If the panel opens but the app does not accept the selection, try another editable field or use copy and paste.
In Outlook, you can use the Windows picker to browse categories or search by keyword while composing a message. Microsoft’s instructions are available in Add flair to your email with emojis.

If the Windows emoji shortcut does not work

| Nothing happens | Click inside an editable text field, then try Windows + ;. |
| The Windows key is inactive | Check whether gaming software, a keyboard game mode, or a manufacturer utility has disabled or remapped the key. |
| You use a compact or non-Windows keyboard | Identify the key that sends the Windows-logo command. A Mac keyboard connected to Windows may map keys differently, and some keyboards require an Fn layer. |
| The picker still will not open | Try the Windows touch keyboard or another built-in input tool, restart the affected app, and then restart Windows if necessary. |
| Search returns no results | Browse categories, choose a recently used emoji, or copy and paste the character. A Microsoft Q&A report describes a Windows search failure as an update-related issue in some cases, but it should not be treated as a universal cause. |
| The app rejects the emoji | Try a different text field or paste the character into the destination instead. |

Windows 10 reached the end of Microsoft’s free Windows Update support, technical assistance, and security fixes on October 14, 2025. Existing Windows 10 installations may continue to run, and some organizations can have separate support arrangements, but interface and emoji behavior can depend on the installed version and updates.

Use emojis on a Mac
- Click inside the text field.
- Press Fn/Globe + E, or choose Edit > Emoji & Symbols.
- Search or browse Character Viewer.
- Click an emoji to insert it.
Apple also provides an Input menu route. To show it in the menu bar, open Apple menu > System Settings > Keyboard > Text Input > Edit, then enable Show Input menu in menu bar. See Apple’s Use emoji and symbols on Mac guide.
Use emojis on a Chromebook
- Click inside a text field.
- Right-click and choose Emoji, or press Search + Shift + Space.
- Browse categories or search for an emoji.
- Select the result to insert it.
Chromebook’s interface can also provide GIF search; Google says its Chromebook GIF search is powered by Tenor. Read Google’s Find emojis, symbols, emoticons and GIFs instructions.

Copy and paste an emoji
Copy and paste is a practical fallback when the picker does not open, an app does not respond to it, or you need an uncommon emoji repeatedly:
- Find the emoji in an existing message or a trusted emoji reference.
- Highlight the emoji and press Ctrl + C.
- Click the destination text field.
- Press Ctrl + V.
Copying inserts the character, but it does not guarantee identical artwork everywhere. The receiving app, operating system, font, and platform determine how that character is rendered.

An emoji is a Unicode character or sequence; its artwork is supplied by the operating system, application, or font. Therefore, the same smiling face, heart, or thumbs-up can look different on Windows, macOS, Android, iPhone, and individual apps. No platform’s design is automatically the universally correct appearance.

A square or blank box usually means the destination cannot render the character. Possible causes include an unsupported font, an older application, a newer emoji sequence, or a website that substitutes a fallback glyph. Gender, skin-tone, family, and flag combinations can also have different support across platforms. Inserting the character successfully and displaying its artwork are separate steps.
Special cases
Laptop without a numeric keypad
You do not need a numeric keypad to use modern emojis. Use the Windows emoji panel, touch keyboard, or copy and paste. Traditional Alt codes are mainly intended for symbols and require a numeric keypad; they are not a practical catalog of current emoji.
Remote Desktop or virtual machine
In Remote Desktop, the Windows key may be captured by the local computer, or keyboard shortcuts may be redirected according to the connection settings. Click inside the remote text field and try the remote system’s on-screen picker. If that fails, copy the emoji locally and paste it into the remote application.
Linux
Linux emoji entry varies by distribution, desktop environment, input method, and application. There is no single shortcut that can safely be presented as universal for every Linux setup; use the documentation for the desktop environment or application you are running.
