Use Auto Shazam in the Shazam app to have your iPhone identify songs automatically while you use another app or lock the phone. Open Shazam, touch and hold the large Shazam button, then let it listen. Auto Shazam keeps identifying music until you turn it off; Apple’s Shazam guide confirms it can continue in the background and while the iPhone is locked.
Turn on Auto Shazam
- Install and open Shazam.
- On Shazam’s main screen, touch and hold the large Shazam button. A brief tap starts a one-time identification; holding it enables Auto Shazam.
- When the app indicates that Auto Shazam is listening, start the music or switch to the app you want to use.
- Leave Shazam running in the background or lock your iPhone. Check Shazam’s library for tracks it identifies.
You may see the iPhone’s orange microphone-use indicator while Auto Shazam is listening. Identifications are not guaranteed: the recording needs to be clear enough, and the track must be available in Shazam’s catalog.
Turn Auto Shazam off
Return to the Shazam app and tap the Shazam button to stop Auto Shazam. Some iPhone models and iOS versions may also show an active-listening control near the microphone or Dynamic Island area, but returning to Shazam and tapping its button is the dependable documented method. The microphone indicator should disappear when the app stops using the microphone.

They solve different problems. Auto Shazam is for listening over time; Control Center’s Recognize Music control is a manual shortcut for identifying a song when you tap it. Apple’s iPhone song-identification instructions describe the Control Center tap-to-identify workflow, not an ongoing listening mode.

Add Recognize Music to Control Center
- Open Control Center.
- Tap Add Controls (+), then Add a Control.
- Choose Recognize Music. On some iOS versions or in older instructions, the control may be called Music Recognition; search for either label if needed.
- When a song is playing, open Control Center and tap the control. A result can appear in a notification. Touch and hold the control to access recognition history.
This is useful for an occasional song, but it does not replace Auto Shazam for continuous recognition. Apple’s current setup steps are in its song identification guide.
Where the identified songs go
Tracks identified in Auto Shazam appear in the Shazam library when recognition succeeds. A notification may also show the result if notifications are enabled. Control Center identifications can be viewed in its history; to have them sync into Shazam, make sure Shazam and iCloud are configured for syncing. Apple describes the relevant settings in its Shazam settings guide.
Music-service playlists are optional, not prerequisites for identifying songs. Shazam can sync a My Shazam Tracks playlist with Apple Music. Spotify synchronization also creates a playlist, but Apple says it requires the Spotify app and a Spotify subscription. These integrations affect where you can organize or play identified tracks; they are not needed to use Auto Shazam.

What it can hear: apps, speakers, and headphones
- Music in another app: Shazam can identify music playing in apps such as TikTok, YouTube, and Instagram. Auto Shazam is handy if you want to stay in the app while it listens.
- Music around you: The iPhone can listen through its microphone to a television, radio, speaker, or nearby venue. Moving closer to a clear source can help.
- Music through headphones: Apple documents a separate workflow for music heard through connected headphones or earphones. Its headphone recognition guide says headphone recognition does not work offline. Bluetooth audio routed privately is not the same as music the phone can capture from a room, so use the headphone-specific workflow when appropriate.
Offline recognition is delayed
Shazam can remember an identification request made while the iPhone is offline and attempt to match it after the phone reconnects to the internet. That is not an instant offline result, and a match still depends on the song being in the catalog. Apple explains this behavior in its offline-use guide. Enable notifications if you want to be alerted when a delayed match is available.
Microphone access and privacy indicator
Auto Shazam needs microphone access. To check permission, go to Settings > Privacy & Security > Microphone and enable Shazam. Depending on the iOS interface, you can also find the app under Settings > Apps > Shazam. Apple says an orange dot—or a square when Differentiate Without Color is enabled—indicates microphone use. You can review the indicator and microphone permissions in Apple’s indicator guide and iPhone privacy controls.
The indicator is expected while Auto Shazam is actively listening. Stop Auto Shazam when you are done, or revoke microphone access in Settings. Continuous listening trades convenience for longer microphone access; no battery-life figure is guaranteed here.

Troubleshooting
Auto Shazam will not start
- Make sure you are on Shazam’s main screen and are touching and holding the Shazam button, rather than tapping it briefly.
- Check that Shazam has microphone permission.
- Update Shazam through the App Store and reopen it. If the problem persists, restart the app and try again.
No song is identified
Move closer to the speaker, try a louder or clearer section, and reduce competing speech or crowd noise if possible. Live versions, covers, remixes, heavily edited audio, and unreleased tracks may not match the catalog. Confirm the iPhone is listening to the source you intend: room audio reaches the microphone, while headphone audio may require the headphone-specific workflow. If you tried offline, reconnect and allow time for Shazam to attempt a match.
The result is missing from the library
Check the notification and Control Center history, then check Shazam’s iCloud Sync settings and internet connection. Control Center history and the Shazam library are related but not identical destinations; Apple notes that syncing settings affect whether Control Center identifications are added to the library.
The microphone indicator stays on
While Auto Shazam is active, microphone use is expected. Return to Shazam and tap the Shazam button to stop it. If it still appears, check whether another app is using the microphone in Control Center, or turn off Shazam’s microphone permission in Settings.

Control Center does not show the control
Edit Control Center using Add Controls (+) > Add a Control and look for Recognize Music or Music Recognition. Labels and interface details can vary by iOS release and iPhone model; the available documentation does not establish one minimum iOS version for every step in this guide.
Can Siri do this instead?
You can ask Siri to identify a song, but that is a one-time request, not a substitute for continuous listening. For songs collected over an extended period, use Auto Shazam.
