For remote website automation, connect Cloudflare Code Mode to Browser Run through its Chrome DevTools Protocol (CDP) connector. Code Mode lets a model write and run a small program that composes typed tool calls, handles intermediate results and returns a focused answer. It is not the same as @cloudflare/codemode/browser, which runs code against tools in the visitor’s own browser and does not control a remote browser.
This guide joins Cloudflare’s Code Mode and Browser Run documentation into an implementation path. Both products are marked as evolving—Code Mode is experimental and Browser Run is beta—so confirm package names, bindings and session options in the current Code Mode documentation and Browser Run documentation before deployment.
What Code Mode does—and what it does not do
In ordinary tool use, a model calls a tool, receives its result, then decides what to call next. Code Mode changes that interaction: the model writes code against typed methods, and the code can make several dependent calls, branch, loop, filter data and return only the useful result. Intermediate values can stay inside that execution instead of being sent back to the model after every operation.

That is useful when a task has meaningful control flow or when a large tool catalog should not be loaded into context all at once. For one straightforward action with a small, fixed set of tools, direct tool calls are usually simpler. Code Mode is an orchestration layer; it does not grant browser access by itself. Cloudflare’s remote-browser path is Browser Run, using CDP.

Choose the right Cloudflare browser integration

For the browser-owned integration, define browser tools with schemas and implementations, create a createBrowserCodeTool() descriptor using an IframeSandboxExecutor, then execute that descriptor in the client. For remote inspection, follow Browser Run’s CDP setup instead; do not treat the browser-owned package as a substitute.
Pick a Code Mode MCP pattern
One code tool for a manageable MCP server
If you own an MCP server with a limited, manageable tool catalog, Cloudflare’s codeMcpServer() pattern wraps that server behind a single code tool. This lets the model compose calls without exposing every operation as a separate model turn. Cloudflare’s current guide says this path currently returns an SDK v1 server and should be served with the explicit legacy createLegacyMcpHandler API. That implementation detail is version-sensitive; verify it in the current guide before copying it into a Worker.
search plus execute for a large catalog
For a large API, expose progressive discovery: the model first searches for relevant operations, then executes code using typed methods and shapes the result. This prevents the full catalog from being loaded into the model’s context up front. Cloudflare’s API MCP server is an example of the large-catalog use case. The choice is about discovery and context size, not whether the API can ultimately perform a browser action.

Cloudflare reports that its catalog has 2,594 API tools and compares Code Mode’s use of about 1,000 tokens with about 1,170,000 tokens for native full schemas and about 244,000 tokens for required parameters. These are Cloudflare’s own catalog comparison figures, not an independent benchmark or a guarantee of the token use for another server.
Set up remote automation with Browser Run
Cloudflare’s Browser Run guide describes a Worker-based setup with a Browser binding and Worker Loader. The runtime needs to export CodemodeRuntime; the Vite plugin can provide that export automatically. Use the current Browser Run guide for the exact configuration and package/API details, because bindings and runtime integration are version-sensitive.
- Decide whether the job needs a browser. Use Browser Run when the model must inspect or interact with a live remote page. Use a regular API tool instead if the task is already represented by a stable API and does not require page rendering or browser interaction.
- Configure the Worker. Follow Browser Run’s documented setup for its Browser binding and Worker Loader. Ensure the deployed runtime exposes
CodemodeRuntime, either through the documented Vite plugin or the equivalent current configuration. - Connect the model to Code Mode. Expose the Code Mode MCP pattern appropriate to your tool catalog. Keep the browser-facing operations typed and narrowly scoped so generated code can inspect the page and perform only the actions your application intends to support.
- Run a bounded task. Have the model discover or call the relevant typed operations, use code to sequence dependent steps, and return a compact result rather than dumping page state or every intermediate response into context.
- Choose session lifecycle deliberately. Use a fresh, one-shot Browser Run session for an isolated job. Retain a session only when the workflow needs continuity of browser state. Consult the current guide for the exact supported lifecycle modes and cleanup behavior.
- Test the boundary before production. Verify what the browser can access, which actions change external state, and how a session is created and ended. Require human approval for consequential actions where appropriate.
Keep authorization outside generated code
Sandboxing code execution is not authorization. Cloudflare’s guidance is to enforce permission checks in upstream tool handlers or the host callback before side effects occur. Do not put credentials in model-visible schemas or tool results. A model-generated program should receive only the narrow capabilities it needs; the server should independently decide whether each consequential operation is allowed.

- Authenticate the caller at the host or upstream service.
- Check authorization immediately before an operation that changes external state.
- Keep secrets in server-side configuration and never return them as tool output.
- Use approval or confirmation for actions such as submitting forms, publishing content or making purchases.
- Limit available methods and validate their arguments instead of treating generated code as trusted application code.
Understand the trade-offs before choosing

Production readiness and reliability
Cloudflare explicitly warns: “Code Mode is experimental and may introduce breaking changes. Use caution in production.” Browser Run is described as beta. Treat both as evolving dependencies rather than stable, unchanging interfaces. Before a release, check the current documentation for API compatibility, session lifecycle and the exact setup supported by your Worker environment.
Keep browser work bounded and observable: return only necessary fields, apply authorization at the server boundary, and make state-changing operations explicit. Test failure paths such as a page that does not load or an interaction that cannot complete, and decide how your application should report those outcomes. Avoid assuming that a successful sandbox execution means the intended site action succeeded; verify the result through an appropriate page or service response.

The model can call tools but cannot control a remote page
Likely cause: The integration uses @cloudflare/codemode/browser, which runs tools in the user’s own browser. Fix: Use Browser Run and its CDP connector for remote-page inspection and interaction.

The Worker fails to initialize the browser runtime
Likely cause: The Browser binding, Worker Loader or CodemodeRuntime export is missing or configured for a different version. Fix: Compare the deployed Worker setup with the current Browser Run guide; if using Vite, check whether its documented plugin is supplying the runtime export.
The MCP handler does not match the server returned by the helper
Likely cause: The current codeMcpServer() guide describes an SDK v1 server that uses createLegacyMcpHandler, while the Worker is wired to a different handler interface. Fix: Verify the current guide’s SDK and handler pairing before changing package versions or adapting examples.
The model sees too many operations or returns bloated output
Likely cause: A large catalog is exposed all at once, or code returns full intermediate responses. Fix: Use the search-and-execute pattern for a large API and return a focused object containing only the fields the caller needs.

An action runs without the intended permission check
Likely cause: The application assumes the sandbox itself enforces business authorization. Fix: Put the permission check in the upstream handler or host callback before the side effect, keep credentials server-side, and add confirmation for consequential actions.
