Canva’s iPhone and Android apps let you create a finished social post, flyer, resume, presentation, collage, logo, or short video without a computer. The workflow is the same on both platforms: install the official app, sign in, choose a template or canvas, edit it, review the result, then download or share it. Button names and locations can vary by app version, device, account, and project type, so use the task rather than an old screenshot as your guide.
This tutorial reflects the current mobile app in August 2026; the “2023” in older tutorial titles is a publication marker, not a promise that today’s interface is unchanged.
What you can make with Canva on a phone
Canva’s mobile app combines templates, photo editing, graphic design, presentations, documents, and video tools. Typical projects include:

- Instagram posts and Stories, TikTok graphics, and YouTube thumbnails
- Flyers, posters, invitations, and event announcements
- Resumes, CVs, simple documents, and presentations
- Logos, collages, and photo-based designs
- Short videos, reels, captions, music, and animated graphics
Phone editing is especially convenient for quick social graphics, photo designs, simple flyers, and short videos. A tablet or desktop is usually more comfortable for exact print alignment, complex brand systems, long video timelines, large presentations, and many-page documents. Canva’s current app descriptions list these design, photo, logo, collage, resume, and video uses in the Apple App Store and Google Play.

Install Canva and sign in
iPhone or iPad
- Open the App Store.
- Search for Canva: AI Video & Photo Editor.
- Check that the developer is Canva.
- Tap Get or the download icon.
- Open Canva and sign in or create an account.
The US App Store listing currently states iOS 15.0 or later for iPhone and iPadOS 15.0 or later for iPad. Check the live listing on your device because compatibility can change: App Store listing.
Android phone or tablet
- Open Google Play.
- Search for Canva: AI Photo & Video Editor.
- Confirm that Canva is the developer.
- Tap Install.
- Open the app and sign in.
The official US listing reports more than 500 million downloads; device compatibility and available features still depend on your Android version and hardware: Google Play listing.
If you cannot install the app
Use Canva in a mobile browser through Canva’s download page. The app is generally the simpler route for beginners, but the browser can be a useful fallback.
Use one account everywhere
Sign up with email, Apple, or Google, then use that same account on your phone and computer so cloud-saved designs appear in both places. An account is not automatically a Canva Pro subscription. If a design is missing, first check whether you accidentally used a different email address or sign-in provider.
Start your first design
Use a template
- From Home, tap the search field or a design category.
- Search for the finished format you need, such as Instagram post, flyer, resume, or YouTube thumbnail.
- Tap a template.
- Choose Customize this template or the current equivalent.
Starting with the correct output type gives you appropriate dimensions and reduces cropping when you publish elsewhere.

Start with a blank canvas
- Tap the create-design control, commonly shown as a +.
- Choose a design type or Custom size.
- Enter the width and height when using custom dimensions.
- Create the blank design.
Canva’s pricing comparison currently lists more than 1,000 design types and custom design creation, although the exact menu wording can differ: Canva pricing.
Edit a template on your phone
Replace the text
- Tap the text box, then tap again if needed to enter text-editing mode.
- Select the sample words and type your own.
- Use the lower toolbar to change font, size, color, alignment, spacing, or effects where available.
- Tap outside the box to finish.
Moving a text box, resizing its container, changing the font size, and rotating the box are different actions. Drag the box to move it; use a corner handle to resize it; change the numeric font size to make letters larger or smaller; and use the rotation control to turn the box.
Replace a template image
- Tap the image.
- Choose Replace, Swap, or the current equivalent.
- Select an upload, camera-roll photo, Canva image, or another available source.
- Adjust the crop and position.
Add your own photo
- Tap +.
- Open Uploads, Camera Roll, Photos, or the equivalent.
- Allow photo access when prompted.
- Select one or more images.
- Tap an uploaded image to place it on the canvas.
iOS and Android show different permission screens. If photos are absent, check Canva’s permissions in the phone’s system settings. After changing permission, restart Canva; you can also try the Files picker if the Photos picker does not show the image.
Add elements
- Tap +, then Elements.
- Search for a keyword such as “arrow,” “circle,” “flower,” or “sticker.”
- Tap an item to add it.
- Resize, rotate, recolor, or reposition it.
A crown or similar paid marker identifies premium content. A premium photo, video, font, template component, or other asset can cause a watermark or payment prompt at export. Canva’s editor help groups elements, templates, images, text, layers, pages, video, audio, and apps as separate functions: Canva editing and designing help.
Move, resize, rotate, and layer objects
- Select: Tap the object.
- Move: Press and drag it.
- Resize: Drag a corner handle.
- Rotate: Drag the rotation handle or use the rotation control.
- Multi-select: Long-press or use the current selection mode.
- Duplicate: Choose the duplicate or copy control.
- Delete: Tap the trash or delete control.
- Undo and redo: Use the curved-arrow controls when shown.
- Reorder: Open Position or Layers, then choose Bring forward or Send backward.
A locked object must be unlocked before it can move. If an item seems to have disappeared, it may be behind another object; inspect Layers or Position.

Work with multiple pages
- Open the page overview or page strip.
- Tap Add page.
- Duplicate a correctly formatted page when you want the same layout.
- Drag page thumbnails to reorder them.
- Delete unwanted pages.
- Preview the complete sequence before exporting.
Duplicating a finished page is usually faster and more consistent than rebuilding every page in a presentation, carousel, or document.
Create a video or add audio
- Start with a video design or video template.
- Upload clips from the phone.
- Add clips to the timeline or page.
- Trim and reorder clips.
- Add text, graphics, transitions, music, or sound.
- Preview the entire video.
- Export as MP4 when ready.
Available controls vary by device, app version, account, and project type. Large projects with many high-resolution clips take longer to upload, render, and export. The current iOS listing promotes captions, cinematic effects, slow motion, music synchronization, and other mobile video tools: App Store listing.
Save and find your work
Canva normally syncs a design to the signed-in account rather than storing only a file on the phone. Wait for syncing before closing the app or changing networks. Use Home, Recent designs, Projects, folders, or search to find it, and rename the design immediately so it is identifiable later.
The editable Canva project and a downloaded PNG, JPG, PDF, or MP4 are different things. Keep the project if you may need to revise the design. Syncing is not an absolute guarantee: a weak connection, crash, account mismatch, or unsynchronized edit can leave recent changes unavailable.
Download a finished design
- Tap Share.
- Tap Download.
- Choose a file type.
- For a multi-page design, select the pages to export.
- Tap Download or the equivalent confirmation.
- Wait for processing, then save to Photos, Files, or Android’s download location.

Share or publish
Tap Share to collaborate, send a copy to another app, publish to a supported social platform, or download first and upload manually.

Use a view-only link or exported file for a final version. An editable link allows the recipient to change your original design.

A premium watermark appears
Return to the editor and find crown-marked templates, images, videos, fonts, or other assets. Replace the premium item with a free alternative, remove it, or pay for the asset or an eligible plan.

Download is unavailable or export fails
- Wait for the design to finish processing.
- Check phone storage and Canva’s permission to save to Photos or Files.
- Use a stable connection.
- Confirm that no selected asset or feature requires payment.
- Try exporting fewer pages.
- Use Canva in a browser as a fallback.
Photos do not appear
Check Canva’s photo and file permissions, confirm the images are local or available through the selected cloud provider, restart the app after changing permissions, and try the Files picker instead of Photos.
The design is cropped after sharing
Common causes are incorrect dimensions, a social platform’s crop, edge-hugging text, or exporting a different page or format than intended. Start with the correct social design type and keep essential content inside safe margins.
Text is behind an image
Open Position or Layers and bring the text forward. Unlock it first if the object is locked.

- Confirm the account email and sign-in provider.
- Search the design title and check Recent designs, Projects, and folders.
- Make sure you edited the original project rather than a downloaded copy.
- Reopen the app after synchronization.
- Use Canva’s account-recovery help if you cannot sign in: Canva Help Center.
The app is slow or crashes
- Close other apps and restart the phone.
- Update Canva through the App Store or Google Play.
- Free up storage.
- Reduce high-resolution assets or video clips.
- Try the browser or desktop version for a large project.
- Do not uninstall until you have confirmed recent work has synchronized.
When to switch from mobile to desktop
Stay on your phone for quick posts, template edits, photo-based flyers, simple resumes, invitations, and short clips. Move to a tablet or computer when you need many pages, precise spacing, extensive copy and paste, detailed print dimensions or bleed, a long timeline, heavy file management, or a large brand library. iPhone and Android differences are mainly permission screens, file pickers, share sheets, screen size, processing power, and device-specific availability; neither platform is universally better.
A final pre-publish checklist
- Choose the correct design size and page sequence.
- Replace every premium asset or confirm that you have permission to use it.
- Keep important text inside safe margins.
- Preview the complete design or video on the phone.
- Select the format suited to the destination: PNG, JPG, PDF, MP4, or GIF.
- Save the editable Canva project and confirm synchronization.
- Use view-only sharing when recipients should not edit the original.
