You can automate browser tasks without configuring a model provider’s API key in your own code by using a managed agent: for supported personal tasks, check whether ChatGPT’s cloud browser is available to you; for a developer workflow, evaluate Browser Use’s hosted agents. Neither option means “no credentials” or “no cost.” A hosted browser service such as Browserbase supplies browser infrastructure, not necessarily the model that decides what to do. Choose based on which layer you want someone else to operate.

What “without managing model API keys” means

Browser automation usually has at least two distinct parts. An agent or model interprets a task and decides what action to take; browser infrastructure provides a browser session in which those actions occur. A service can manage the browser while leaving the model connection—and its provider credentials—to you. Conversely, a hosted agent may operate both the agent and browser, shifting more of the setup to its provider.

So the practical goal is usually not to eliminate every credential. It is to avoid creating, storing, and wiring a separate model-provider key into your own application. You may still need to authenticate to the agent service, authorize access through a sign-in flow, or pay for usage. Confirm the current product scope and billing before relying on a particular service.

Choose the option that manages the part you need

Option What it manages Credentials that remain Best fit and limits
ChatGPT cloud browser A remote browser and delegated task flow inside ChatGPT You may need to sign in through its secure flow; access depends on plan, region, rollout, and workspace permissions. Low-setup route for supported tasks and sites. It can pause for sign-in or confirmation, and sites may block automation.
Browser Use hosted web agents A hosted agent and cloud browser for an end-to-end task Browser Use authentication remains: its REST/SDK access uses a Browser Use API key; its MCP clients use OAuth 2.0. Developer-oriented route when you want the provider to run the agent and browser. Verify current scope and billing.
Browser Use browser infrastructure or Browserbase Browser sessions and related browser capabilities Service credentials may remain, and your agent may still need a model-provider credential. Useful when browser provisioning is the problem, not a complete solution to model-key management by itself.
Local browser with your own agent Your local browser session and chosen agent integration Depends on the agent and model; provider wrappers can require the provider’s API key. For users who want a local browser or already have an agent. It involves more setup; the cited product information does not establish a full local-security comparison.

For common delegated web tasks

First check whether ChatGPT’s cloud browser is available to your account and region. OpenAI describes it as a remote computer, separate from the browser on your device. It does not reuse that browser’s tabs, cookies, saved passwords, or current sign-ins. You will sign in separately when needed.

For a developer workflow

Evaluate Browser Use’s hosted-agent offering if you want a provider to run both the agent and browser. That is different from using Browser Use only for browser infrastructure with an agent you operate. The hosted-service framing can avoid wiring a separate model-provider key into your own agent code, but it does not remove Browser Use authentication: REST/SDK use a Browser Use API key, while MCP clients use OAuth 2.0.

If you already have an agent

Compare Browser Use’s browser infrastructure and Browserbase as browser-layer services. These may solve browser provisioning or session needs, but do not assume that either supplies model inference for your agent. Browserbase’s example configuration includes both browser settings and a model API key, illustrating why “managed browser” and “managed model” are separate questions.

A practical selection process

  1. Write down the task and its risk. Distinguish browsing or research from signing in, changing an account, posting, purchasing, or another consequential action. The latter needs a human review and confirmation point.
  2. Identify the layer you want to offload. If you want to delegate a task inside a consumer product, check ChatGPT cloud-browser eligibility. If you are building a developer workflow and want a managed agent plus browser, assess Browser Use hosted agents. If you only need a remote browser for an existing agent, assess browser infrastructure instead.
  3. List the credentials before choosing. Ask whether you need an agent-service key or OAuth authorization, whether a model-provider key is still required, and how website sign-in is performed. A service that removes one key from your application can still require its own authentication.
  4. Check access and usage terms. Confirm plan and workspace eligibility, regional availability, current feature scope, and the components included in billing. Do not equate “hosted” with a single all-inclusive price.
  5. Run a low-risk trial task. Use a public or non-consequential task first. Observe where the agent pauses, what it asks you to confirm, and whether the target site permits automation.
  6. Keep a human in the loop for consequential steps. Inspect the website address, the action preview, and any confirmation screen. Stop if the browser reaches the wrong site or proposes an action using incorrect information.

Authentication and safety: keep sign-in separate from prompts

Use the product’s intended sign-in or authorization flow. Do not put passwords, security codes, or payment details into an ordinary agent prompt. For ChatGPT cloud browser, OpenAI says credentials entered into its secure form go directly to the remote browser and are not visible to the model. That description applies to that flow; it should not be generalized to other products.

OpenAI also notes that some websites restrict automated browser agents. A cloud session may ask you to sign in, take over, confirm an action, or complete a final step yourself. Support depends on the site and action. Treat these pauses as boundaries to review, not as an invitation to bypass a site’s restrictions.

ChatGPT cloud-browser sessions use separate browser data and signed-in sessions from your device. OpenAI says a session may persist for later tasks until it expires or you clear the data; clearing browser data signs you out. Consider who can access the account and workspace, and clear session data when appropriate.

OpenAI recommends preferring an app or plugin when it supports the task, giving clear instructions, and checking addresses and confirmation screens. It also describes testing against prompt injection, phishing, and unintended actions while acknowledging safeguards do not eliminate every risk. Those are recommendations and safeguards, not a guarantee that an agent will always act correctly.

Understand the cost components

Ask which usage components are billed: the agent or model, browser time, and any separate service or plan charges. Browser Use’s MCP page displays a rate of $0.02 per hour of browser time plus model tokens. That is a vendor-displayed figure, not an independently verified full price schedule or a total-task estimate. Check the live pricing information before choosing; a browser-time rate alone cannot tell you what a typical task will cost.

Browser Use’s documentation distinguishes its hosted cloud from its CLI and Python-library paths, and describes model inference and hosted browsers as separate usage components. Direct model-provider wrappers use that provider’s own API key. In other words, changing how you obtain a browser does not necessarily change who runs the model or bills for its tokens.

What browser infrastructure does—and does not—solve

Managed browser infrastructure can remove the burden of supplying or provisioning a browser session. It does not, by itself, answer who interprets the task, where model inference runs, which model credentials are needed, or how task usage is billed. If your objective is to stop managing a model key, select a hosted-agent or end-user agent flow that actually includes the agent/model layer, then check its remaining authentication requirements.

Likewise, a local browser can be the right choice when keeping the session on your device matters, but local execution does not automatically remove provider credentials. The credential requirement depends on the agent integration and model you select. Product documentation should establish the exact setup for your chosen path; do not assume all local and hosted configurations work alike.

Or skip the browser setup

If your job is to capture a webpage rather than click through an interactive workflow, a screenshot API may be a simpler tool. ScreenshotNeo is a website screenshot API and MCP server, not a general-purpose browser agent: it returns screenshots or PDFs from a URL rather than automating arbitrary sequences of website actions. Its one-call example is:

curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp

See the ScreenshotNeo API documentation for request details. Before capture, it can accept cookie/consent banners and remove 60+ known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets; each step can be turned off. Bot checks, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits cost nothing, and response headers report the page verdict and billing status. Its MCP server provides take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf for AI agents. The Free plan includes 1,000 shots per month with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 shots.

Troubleshooting common problems

The service still asks for a key

Check which service is asking. Browser Use REST/SDK authentication uses a Browser Use API key, even if a hosted agent means you do not configure a separate model-provider key in your own agent code. Browser Use MCP clients use OAuth 2.0. If you selected browser infrastructure alone, your agent may still need a model-provider credential.

The cloud browser is not available

Check account plan, region, rollout, and workspace permissions. Availability is not universal. If your account is not eligible, choose a developer-oriented hosted agent or another supported workflow rather than assuming the feature is present.

The site asks you to take over or blocks the task

Sign in through the supported secure flow when prompted, review confirmation requests, and complete unsupported final steps yourself if the service permits that workflow. Sites may restrict automation; do not treat a block as a technical obstacle to evade.

The task works but the bill is unclear

Separate browser-time charges from model-token charges and other plan costs. Check the provider’s current pricing and which usage components apply to your configuration; the displayed browser-hour rate alone is not a task estimate.

Your session is not signed in

Remember that ChatGPT cloud browser has its own remote session and does not reuse your device browser’s cookies or saved passwords. Sign in separately through its secure flow. If browser data was cleared, OpenAI says that signs you out.

Choose by responsibility, not by the word “hosted”

For a low-setup supported task, check ChatGPT cloud-browser availability. For a developer-built workflow where the provider should operate both agent and browser, evaluate Browser Use hosted agents and account for its own authentication and usage charges. For a browser-only need, compare browser infrastructure while planning separately for model access. In every case, keep sign-in and consequential actions under deliberate human review.
