Use Playwright’s Chromium launcher and point it at Brave’s executable: set executablePath in JavaScript or executable_path in Python. Find the real path in brave://version or the Brave shortcut’s Target field rather than guessing. This runs your installed Brave build, but Playwright guarantees compatibility with its bundled browsers—not external Brave binaries—so keep bundled Chromium as your baseline for diagnosing failures.
What using Brave with Playwright means
Playwright does not have a separate Brave launcher. Use its Chromium API and provide Brave’s executable path. This is distinct from Playwright’s normal setup, where it launches a browser version installed for Playwright itself.
The distinction matters: Playwright’s API reference warns, “Use executablePath option with extreme caution.” Its guaranteed compatibility is with Playwright’s bundled Chromium, Firefox, and WebKit; an external executable such as Brave runs at your risk. See the Playwright browser-type API reference.
Use Brave when you specifically need to test against Brave’s behavior or a locally installed Brave build. Use Playwright’s bundled Chromium when reproducibility and the supported compatibility baseline matter more than matching the desktop browser.

Find Brave’s executable path
Use the path for the Brave installation available to the account that will run Playwright. Brave installations can vary by operating system, installation scope, and architecture. On Windows, C:Program FilesBraveSoftwareBrave-BrowserApplicationbrave.exe is a commonly documented system-install location, not a universal path.
- Open Brave and visit
brave://version. - Copy the value beside Executable Path. The page also shows Profile Path, which is useful when diagnosing profile conflicts.
- Alternatively, on Windows, right-click the Brave shortcut, open its properties, and copy the shortcut’s Target.
- Set the copied path in an environment variable named
BRAVE_PATH, then read that variable from your script.
Brave’s help guidance describes quoting the executable path when launching from a command line and notes that the path can be copied from a shortcut’s Target field. See Brave’s command-line flags guidance and its instructions for finding the Brave version and executable path.
Set the environment variable
On macOS or Linux, in a shell, replace the example with the path you found:
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsexport BRAVE_PATH="/path/to/brave"
In PowerShell, set it for the current session:
$env:BRAVE_PATH = "C:Program FilesBraveSoftwareBrave-BrowserApplicationbrave.exe"
For CI, configure BRAVE_PATH in the job environment and make sure the CI account can execute that file. Avoid committing a machine-specific absolute path into source code.
Launch Brave from Playwright with JavaScript
Install Playwright in a JavaScript project, then make the executable path available as BRAVE_PATH. This script launches Brave headlessly, opens a page, prints its title, and closes the browser even if navigation or title retrieval fails.

headless: true,
});
try {
const page = await browser.newPage();
await page.goto('https://example.com');
console.log(await page.title());
} finally {
await browser.close();
}
Set headless: false if you need to watch the browser interact with the page. The script uses Brave as the browser binary, but the API remains Playwright’s Chromium API.
Launch Brave from Playwright with Python
In Python, the corresponding option is named executable_path. The synchronous example below checks the environment variable, navigates, prints the title, and closes the browser.

Use the same environment-variable approach in asynchronous Python projects with Playwright’s asynchronous API. The key distinction remains the snake-case option name, executable_path.
Keep cookies and local storage between runs
A normal browser launch with a fresh context is temporary. If you need a login or other browser state to persist, use launchPersistentContext and give Playwright a dedicated user-data directory. Do not point automation at the profile of a personal Brave instance that is already running.
import { chromium } from 'playwright';
const bravePath = process.env.BRAVE_PATH;
if (!bravePath) throw new Error('Set BRAVE_PATH to the Brave executable path');
const context = await chromium.launchPersistentContext('./.brave-playwright-profile', {
executablePath: bravePath,
headless: false,
});

try {
const page = await context.newPage();
await page.goto('https://example.com');
// Sign in or perform the browser work here.
} finally {
await context.close();
}
The persistent launch returns the only browser context; close it with context.close(). Cookies and local storage are associated with the specified user-data directory, so reuse that directory for later runs that need the same session. Playwright documents that a user-data directory cannot be used by multiple browser instances concurrently. See the persistent context API documentation.
- Use a separate automation directory, such as
./.brave-playwright-profile, not your everyday Brave profile. - Do not start two concurrent processes with the same profile directory. Use a distinct directory per concurrent process.
- Protect the directory as sensitive data: a persistent profile can contain active authentication state.
Choose between Brave and Playwright’s bundled Chromium
| Approach | Compatibility | Session behavior | Best use |
|---|---|---|---|
| Playwright bundled Chromium | Playwright’s guaranteed Chromium baseline | Temporary unless you choose a persistent-context workflow | Reproducible Playwright tests and initial troubleshooting |
| Installed Brave via executable path | External browser; Playwright does not promise a Brave-specific compatibility guarantee | Temporary by default; persistent with a dedicated user-data directory | Checking behavior in the Brave build you intend to use |
For reproducible work with Brave, record which executable path and Brave build your environment uses, and control the profile directory. A system browser can change independently of your project. No Brave-specific compatibility matrix or performance benchmark is established by the cited official documentation.
Use launch arguments carefully
Playwright accepts browser launch arguments if a test genuinely requires a Chromium command-line switch. Keep the list minimal: flags can change security, rendering, or extension behavior and make the run less representative. Brave’s command-line guidance places flags after the quoted executable path when launching from a command line. The Playwright code option is args; for example, add only a flag you have a concrete reason to test:
const browser = await chromium.launch({
executablePath: process.env.BRAVE_PATH,
headless: true,
args: ['--some-required-flag'],
});

Replace the illustrative flag with the exact switch your scenario requires; do not copy flags from unrelated setups. Validate extensions and Brave Shields behavior locally, since the cited official sources do not establish a compatibility guarantee for them.

Install and diagnose Playwright’s managed browser
Playwright’s browser-install commands help separate a Playwright installation problem from a Brave-specific one. Run these from the project environment where Playwright is installed:
npx playwright installinstalls Playwright browsers.npx playwright install-depsinstalls operating-system dependencies on supported Linux setups.npx playwright install --listlists browsers installed for Playwright.
See the Playwright browser installation guide. For a known-good comparison, run the same navigation using chromium.launch() without executablePath. If bundled Chromium works but Brave does not, focus diagnosis on the external executable, Brave build, environment permissions, or Brave-specific behavior.
Troubleshoot common failures
Playwright says the executable cannot be found
- Print the value of
BRAVE_PATHin the same shell or CI job that starts the script. - Check that the path names the executable file itself, not a containing folder or shortcut.
- Recopy it from the shortcut Target field or
brave://version; do not assume the common Windows path applies to every installation. - Confirm the account running the script has permission to read and execute the file.
Brave opens and immediately exits, or refuses to start
- Close other Brave processes and retry with a fresh dedicated automation profile.
- If using a persistent context, confirm no other browser instance is using that user-data directory.
- Try a non-persistent launch to isolate profile-related trouble from executable or environment issues.
- Compare against bundled Chromium to learn whether the failure is specific to the external browser.
It works locally but fails in CI
- Verify Brave is installed on the CI machine and that
BRAVE_PATHis set in the job, not only in your interactive shell. - Confirm the CI account can execute Brave and access the profile directory.
- Test headless and headed modes separately in an environment where headed display support is available.
- Compare the installed Brave build and Playwright version; Playwright does not publish a Brave-specific compatibility guarantee in the cited sources.
Pages behave differently in Brave
First run the same script with Playwright’s bundled Chromium. If results diverge, check for Brave-specific settings, Shields behavior, extensions, or flags. Treat those differences as local test conditions rather than assuming Playwright will configure them identically across Brave builds.

A regular launch does not reuse a persistent profile automatically. Switch to launchPersistentContext and consistently use the same dedicated user-data directory. Make sure the prior run closed cleanly and that another process is not using that directory.
Or skip the browser setup
If your task is to capture a page rather than interact with a local Brave session, ScreenshotNeo offers a website screenshot API and MCP server. A single request can return an image or PDF; its API options include full-page capture, viewport and device settings, waiting for page conditions, and custom CSS or JavaScript. See the ScreenshotNeo API documentation.
Example cURL request:
curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://example.com -o shot.webp
The returned capture can be PNG, JPEG, or WebP according to the request configuration. ScreenshotNeo removes cookie/consent banners, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before capture; those steps can be turned off. Bot checks/CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits are not billed, and response headers report the page verdict and billing status. Its MCP server provides take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf for AI agents using Claude, Cursor, or another MCP client. The free plan includes 1,000 screenshots monthly with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can Playwright automate the Brave browser already installed on my computer?
Yes. Use Playwright’s Chromium launcher and supply Brave’s executable path. External-browser compatibility is not guaranteed in the same way as Playwright’s bundled browsers.
Will Playwright use my normal Brave profile automatically?
No. Use a dedicated user-data directory with a persistent context if you need state to survive between runs; do not share that directory between concurrent instances.
