With an Android device connected through ADB, run adb exec-out screencap -p > screen.png. The command captures the current device display as PNG data and writes it directly to screen.png on your computer. Android Developers documents exec-out for retrieving raw command output and describes screencap as the shell utility for taking a device-display screenshot.
What the command does
Android Developers’ adb documentation describes screencap as “a shell utility for taking a screenshot of a device display.” ADB (Android Debug Bridge) starts that utility on the connected Android device, while your computer’s shell redirects the resulting bytes into a local file.
adbinvokes Android Debug Bridge from your computer.exec-outruns the command and returns its raw output without treating it as an interactive shell session.screencapcaptures the device display.-prequests PNG format.> screen.pngsends the output stream to a file namedscreen.pngin the terminal’s current directory.
The documented command does not ask for a filename on the device. Because the filename is omitted from screencap, the utility writes the image to standard output; the computer-side redirection stores that stream locally.

What you need
- An Android device connected through ADB.
- A terminal in which the
adbcommand is available. - Permission to write a file in the terminal’s current directory.
This procedure is the command-line workflow documented for a connected device. The cited documentation does not establish a particular cable, phone model, operating-system edition, shell, screenshot resolution, capture speed, or hardware requirement. Installation and device-authorisation steps vary by computer and Android configuration, so use the platform-specific setup instructions that apply to your environment before running the capture command.

Take a screenshot directly to your computer
1. Connect and target the device
Connect the Android device and make sure the ADB connection you intend to use is the active target. If only one target is available, the basic command is sufficient. When more than one device or emulator is available, select one explicitly with an ADB device selector.
2. Run the one-command capture
adb exec-out screencap -p > screen.png
On success, the PNG is saved as screen.png on the computer. The display shown at the instant screencap runs is what is captured; the command does not describe a crop, application filter, delay, or scrolling operation.
3. Choose a different local filename or directory
Replace the redirection destination with a path that your shell can write:
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
adb exec-out screencap -p > captures/home-screen.png
The directory must already exist unless your shell or surrounding script creates it. A filename ending in .png makes the format obvious, but the format is determined by -p, not by the filename extension.
4. Capture a selected target
The ADB documentation lists -d, -e, and -s serial_number for choosing a target where appropriate. Place the selector before exec-out:

adb -d exec-out screencap -p > physical-device.png
adb -e exec-out screencap -p > emulator.png
adb -s SERIAL_NUMBER exec-out screencap -p > named-device.png
-dtargets a connected hardware device.-etargets an emulator.-s SERIAL_NUMBERidentifies a specific target by its serial number.
Use the selector that matches your connection rather than relying on whichever target ADB chooses by default. Replace SERIAL_NUMBER with the actual serial value for the device.
Alternative: save on Android, then pull the file
If you prefer the screenshot to be created as a file on the device first, use the two commands documented for that workflow:
adb shell screencap /sdcard/screen.png
adb pull /sdcard/screen.png
The first command runs screencap through adb shell and writes /sdcard/screen.png on the Android device. The second transfers that file to the computer’s current directory. This approach has two explicit stages—capture and transfer—whereas exec-out streams the capture to a local file in one command.
| Workflow | First destination | Commands | When it fits |
|---|---|---|---|
| Direct stream | Computer | One command | When you want a local PNG immediately and do not need a device-side copy. |
| Device file then pull | Android device | Capture plus transfer | When keeping an explicit file on the device is useful before copying it. |
The documentation does not claim that either workflow is faster. The practical difference established by the commands is destination and number of steps.
How to make the command reliable in scripts
Use deterministic names
For repeated captures, generate a unique local filename in the surrounding script or provide a run-specific path. The ADB command itself only supplies the image stream; naming, directory creation, and retention are responsibilities of the calling shell or program.

Keep the PNG stream separate from diagnostics
Because the direct form writes image bytes to standard output, redirect that output to a file rather than piping it into a text-processing command. If you need logs, send them to a separate channel in your scripting environment so diagnostic text cannot be mixed into the PNG.
Select a target explicitly in multi-device jobs
Automation that can see several devices should include -d, -e, or -s on every capture. This prevents a later connection from changing which display receives the screenshot.
Use the device-file method when local streaming is unsuitable
The two-step method gives you a named path on Android and a separate transfer operation. It is a useful fallback when your shell or pipeline does not handle binary standard-output redirection as expected. The supplied documentation does not establish identical redirection behavior for every operating system or shell, so test the direct form in the shell used by your automation.
Troubleshooting
“adb” is not found
Your terminal cannot locate the ADB executable. Make ADB available to that shell according to your computer’s Android tooling setup, then rerun the command. This article’s documented workflow starts after ADB is available; it does not prescribe one installation method for every operating system.
The command reports no available device
ADB has no usable target for the command. Check the physical or emulator connection and the ADB state, then retry. If the target is present but more than one device is available, add an explicit selector such as -s SERIAL_NUMBER.

A different device was captured
More than one target was available and the command was not specific enough. Repeat the capture with adb -s SERIAL_NUMBER exec-out screencap -p > screen.png, or use -d for a hardware device or -e for an emulator as appropriate.
The output file is empty or is not a usable PNG
Confirm that you used exec-out, included screencap -p, and redirected standard output directly to the file. Do not add a device filename to the direct-stream form unless you intentionally want a different workflow. If binary redirection is being altered by the shell, use the device-side capture followed by adb pull.
The file is created in an unexpected place
screen.png is relative to the terminal’s current working directory. Use an absolute or deliberately chosen relative path in the redirection destination, and ensure its parent directory exists.
The image shows the wrong moment
screencap captures the display when it runs. Navigate the device to the desired state before issuing the command. The documented invocation does not include a wait, tap, scroll, or multi-frame capture option.

It captures the device display
The utility is defined as taking a screenshot of the device display. The command therefore represents what is rendered on that display at capture time; it is not documented here as an app-export, DOM capture, camera photo, or selectable-region tool.
No performance figure is established
The Android documentation cited for this workflow provides no benchmark for capture time, transfer speed, maximum resolution, or compatibility by device model. Treat those characteristics as environment-dependent and measure them in your own automation if they matter.
