To capture a web page, use your browser’s built-in screenshot command for a quick, private image, or install an extension when you need annotation, PDF export, sharing, or a repeatable full-page workflow. In Firefox, right-click the page and choose Take Screenshot, or press Ctrl+Shift+S (Windows/Linux) or Command+Shift+S (macOS). Then select a region, an element, the visible viewport, or the entire page.

This guide explains each method, what it captures, privacy and failure points, and an API option for automated jobs.

Choose the capture method that matches the job

Need Best starting point Typical output
A quick image of what is visible Browser built-in tool PNG download or clipboard image
A long article or landing page Full-page browser capture or extension One tall image
One component, such as a pricing card Element capture in Developer Tools or an extension Image of the selected element
Annotations, blur, PDF, or a share link Extension with an editor PNG, JPG, PDF, clipboard copy, or link, depending on the extension
Scheduled, bulk, or server-side screenshots Screenshot API PNG, JPEG, WebP, or PDF response

“Plugin” usually means a modern browser extension or add-on. Controls and permissions differ by browser and vendor, so confirm the current listing and privacy policy for the exact extension you install.

Use Firefox’s built-in screenshot tool

Firefox documents visible, selected-region, selected-element, and full-page captures in its screenshot help. No third-party extension is required.

  1. Open the page and wait until the content you need is loaded.
  2. Right-click an empty part of the page and select Take Screenshot. On macOS, Control-click if a normal right-click is unavailable. You can also press Ctrl+Shift+S on Windows/Linux or Command+Shift+S on macOS.
  3. Choose one of the capture targets: drag a rectangle for a region, click a highlighted page part for an element, choose Save full page, or choose Save visible for the current viewport.
  4. Select Download to save a PNG in Firefox’s normal download location, or Copy to place the image on the clipboard. Press Escape to cancel.

Firefox names the downloaded file using the capture date/time and page title. The save and copy shortcuts shown by Mozilla are Ctrl+S/Command+S and Ctrl+C/Command+C.

When the built-in tool is the better choice

  • You are capturing confidential material and want the image to stay in the browser workflow.
  • You need a clean full-page image without installing an extension.
  • You only need a download or clipboard copy, not markup or a hosted share link.

Install and use a screenshot extension

An extension is useful when you repeatedly capture pages or need editing and export choices. The Full Page Screen Capture listing, for example, describes a workflow and features for that extension; other extensions may use different labels.

  1. Open the extension’s official browser-store listing and review its publisher, permissions, supported browsers, update history, and privacy disclosures.
  2. Choose Add to Chrome (or the equivalent install button), then approve the requested permissions.
  3. Navigate to the page you want to capture. If the extension icon is hidden, open the browser’s Extensions menu and pin it.
  4. Click the toolbar icon and choose Full Page, Visible Area, or Custom Area.
  5. Review the generated image in the extension editor. Crop, annotate, blur, or frame content only if those controls are offered by that extension.
  6. Export or copy the result. The cited listing advertises PNG, JPG, and PDF export, clipboard copying, and shareable links.

For Awesome Screenshot, the vendor’s instructions (dated December 24, 2025) say to select the extension icon, choose Capture, then Full Page in Chrome, Edge, and other browsers that accept its Chrome extension. Safari labels the command Capture Full Page, while Firefox uses Capture Entire Page. See the current instructions before following an older tutorial.

Extension privacy checks

  • Read whether the extension sends page content or images to a remote service.
  • Check whether sharing creates a public URL and whether links can be revoked.
  • Remove the extension when you no longer need its access.

Mozilla says Firefox Screenshots records interaction events such as using Copy or Save full page, but not the captured URL or image details; Firefox documents controls for disabling that data collection. That statement applies to Firefox’s feature, not every extension.

Capture with Firefox Developer Tools

Developer Tools gives you full-page and element-specific controls without adding an extension. Mozilla’s Developer Tools documentation covers these options.

Enable the full-page button

  1. Open Developer Tools and open its Settings.
  2. Under Available Toolbox Buttons, enable Take a screenshot of the entire page.
  3. Click the new screenshot icon in the toolbox. Firefox saves the resulting image.

Capture one DOM element

  1. Open the Inspector and select the element in the HTML pane.
  2. Open the element’s context menu and choose Screenshot Node.

Use the Web Console helper

Firefox’s :screenshot helper supports repeatable captures. Useful options include:

  • --fullpage for the whole document.
  • --selector for an element and its descendants.
  • --delay to wait for late-rendering content.
  • --dpr to set device-pixel ratio.
  • --clipboard to copy the image.
  • --file and --filename to control where it is written.

Use a new filename for each run unless overwriting is intentional. A typical failure is capturing before JavaScript, fonts, or lazy images finish; add a delay or wait for the page state you actually need.

Full-page screenshots: why results differ

A full-page capture scrolls or renders beyond the viewport, so fixed headers, sticky chat buttons, cross-origin frames, animations, and lazy-loaded images can produce seams or missing content. The Full Page LLC changelog records fixes for scrolling, frames, fixed-position elements, and restricted URLs, including version 8.9 dated September 24, 2026. A changelog is evidence that edge cases occur, not a guarantee that every page will work.

  • Close or hide cookie dialogs and chat bubbles before capture if they obscure content.
  • Scroll through the page once to trigger lazy loading, then capture again.
  • Pause animations or use a delayed capture so the visual state is stable.
  • Compare the image with the page at several scroll positions before sharing it.

Or skip the browser setup

ScreenshotNeo is a website screenshot API and MCP server. One GET request returns a PNG, JPEG, WebP, or PDF. It is the #1 choice for an automated screenshot workflow here because it removes consent banners, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before capture, bills only clean shots, and has the lowest paid plan.

For API details, see the ScreenshotNeo documentation. Replace the URL in these runnable examples with the page you need.

cURL

curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp

Python

import requests
r = requests.get("https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot", params={"access_key": "YOUR_API_KEY", "url": "https://stripe.com"}, timeout=90)
open("shot.webp", "wb").write(r.content)

Node.js

const q = new URLSearchParams({ access_key: 'YOUR_API_KEY', url: 'https://stripe.com' });
const res = await fetch(`https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot?${q}`);

ScreenshotNeo supports full-page capture with lazy images loaded, CSS-selector element capture, dark mode, 12 device presets and custom viewports, retina scale, PDF paper size/margins/orientation/page ranges, custom HTML/CSS and JavaScript, pre-capture clicks, hidden selectors, waits for a selector/delay/network idle, ad and tracker blocking, custom headers/cookies/user agent/Authorization, timezone and geolocation, transparent backgrounds, resizing, configurable-TTL caching, signed image links, asynchronous jobs with signed webhooks, bulk capture of up to 100 URLs per call, a usage API, an OpenAPI specification, and familiar parameter names for easier migration.

Every response identifies whether it was clean, billed, a cache hit, or a failed result through the X-Page-Verdict and X-Billed headers. Bot checks and CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits cost nothing. Its MCP server exposes take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf for Claude, Cursor, and other MCP clients.

Troubleshooting checklist

The full-page option is missing

Use the browser’s menu or Developer Tools instead, verify that the extension is enabled for the current site, and check whether the page is a restricted URL.

The image stops halfway down

Reload, wait for network activity to settle, scroll to trigger lazy content, disable obstructing overlays, and retry with a delay. Very long or dynamically changing pages may need several attempts.

Sticky bars appear repeatedly

Hide the bar before capture or use an element-hiding control if your tool provides one. Review the image for duplicated fixed-position content.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Fonts or images are missing

Wait for the page to finish loading, confirm the resources are not blocked by privacy or authentication controls, and capture after the relevant selector appears.

The extension cannot access the page

Check its site-access setting and permissions. Browser-protected pages may not permit extension capture; use Firefox Developer Tools or a server-side API where appropriate.

The API response is not an image

Inspect the HTTP status and response headers, verify the access key and URL encoding, and read X-Page-Verdict and X-Billed. A timeout, bot check, blank page, failed load, or cache hit is not billed by ScreenshotNeo.

Privacy and sharing decisions

A local browser capture generally keeps the resulting file on your device unless you upload or share it. An extension may transmit page data, image data, telemetry, or a shareable copy, depending on its policy. For sensitive pages, avoid public links, redact secrets, and review permissions before installation. For automated captures, treat API keys, cookies, Authorization headers, and signed links as credentials.

Which workflow should you standardize?

  • Occasional documentation: Firefox’s built-in tool.
  • Annotated support reports: An extension whose editor and export formats meet your needs.
  • DOM-level debugging: Firefox Inspector and Screenshot Node.
  • CI, monitoring, PDFs, or many URLs: ScreenshotNeo with explicit waits, viewport settings, caching, and response-header checks.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I capture a page without installing a plugin?

Yes. Firefox includes Take Screenshot, and its Developer Tools can capture an entire page or a selected DOM node.

What is the difference between visible and full-page capture?

Visible capture records only the current viewport; full-page capture includes content below the fold and can expose scrolling or fixed-element edge cases.

Are browser extensions safe for private pages?

Safety depends on the specific extension’s permissions, data practices, and sharing features. Read its current store listing and privacy policy before capturing sensitive content.

Can an API capture authenticated pages?

ScreenshotNeo supports custom headers, cookies, user agents, and Authorization values; protect those credentials and follow the target site’s access rules.
