A spin button (also called a spinner or spinbox) lets you choose a number within a defined range. Focus the field, type the value you want, or use its increase and decrease controls. The step size, limits, keyboard shortcuts, and validation depend on the application.
What is a spin button?
A spin button combines an editable value field with controls for increasing or decreasing that value. It normally has a minimum, maximum, and step—for example, 1 to 10 in steps of 1, or 8 to 72 in steps of 2.
You may see spin buttons for quantities, number of copies, font size, zoom, volume, minutes, prices, or parts of a date and time. Visual cues include a number in a small field and up/down arrows, plus/minus buttons, or vertical increment controls. Not every field that displays a number is a spin button: a plain numeric text field may not provide increment buttons or arrow-key behavior.
Spin buttons suit exact, step-based numeric values. A select menu is usually clearer for a short list of named choices, while a slider is better when approximate or proportional selection matters.

How to use a spin button
- Focus the field. Click or tap the number, or move to it with the keyboard.
- Enter a value directly. Select the existing value if necessary and type the number you need. This is usually faster than pressing an arrow repeatedly across a large range.
- Adjust by one step. Click or tap the up/plus control to increase the value, or the down/minus control to decrease it.
- Check the range and format. Follow nearby instructions for the permitted minimum, maximum, decimal separator, units, and step. Do not assume the control starts at zero or changes by one.
- Commit the value. Press Enter, move to another field, submit the form, or use the application’s Save or Apply command. Some controls validate only when you leave the field.
Press-and-hold repetition, acceleration, swipe gestures, and always-visible arrows are application-specific. If tiny controls are difficult to tap, type the value or use the keyboard instead.

The WAI-ARIA spinbutton pattern recommends keeping focus in the text field while arrow keys change the value. Standard editing keys should continue to work for selecting, deleting, and moving through text. Existing applications do not all implement every optional shortcut, so test the control rather than assuming Home, End, or Page keys are available.
What happens at the minimum or maximum?
At a boundary, the value may stop changing, the relevant button may become disabled, or the application may show a validation message. A typed value can also be corrected or rejected after you leave the field. Read the displayed help text and error message for the actual range. A value may temporarily be empty or incomplete while you replace it; that does not necessarily mean the final value is invalid.

Decimals, negative numbers, and locale-specific formats vary. A control might accept 0.5, a comma decimal separator, or negative values—or reject them. Units such as kg, %, or a currency symbol may be displayed separately; type them only when the interface explicitly asks for them.
Using spin buttons in date and time fields
Date and time pickers can contain separate spin-button-like fields for month, day, year, hour, minute, seconds, or an AM/PM choice. Focus the particular component you want to change; the arrow keys generally adjust that component, not the entire date. A month may be stored numerically but displayed as a name, and different browsers and screen readers may expose these fields differently.
Using a spin button with a screen reader
- Navigate to the labeled control and confirm that it is announced as a spin button or numeric input.
- Listen for the current value and, where exposed, its minimum and maximum.
- Enter the screen reader’s normal interaction or forms mode and focus the field.
- Type a value or use Up Arrow and Down Arrow.
- Confirm the changed value from the announcement or application feedback.
Announcement wording differs between screen readers, browsers, operating systems, and implementations. A usable control needs an accessible name, preferably from a native label. Custom controls can use aria-labelledby or aria-label. If a numeric value has a less obvious meaning—for example, 1 means January—aria-valuetext can provide the human-readable equivalent and must be updated whenever the value changes. If the arrows do nothing
- Confirm that the field itself has focus.
- Try the pointer controls, then try entering a valid value manually.
- Check the displayed minimum, maximum, and step.
- Look for disabled or read-only status, or a prerequisite option that must be selected first.
- Move focus away and back to trigger validation or an update.
- Reopen the dialog or reload the page if the application appears stuck.
The value may already be at a boundary, the field may require whole numbers or a particular decimal format, or a script may be intercepting key events. If it fails only with a keyboard or assistive technology, report it as an accessibility or usability defect and provide the application, browser, input method, and steps to reproduce.
For developers: build an accessible spin button
Prefer native HTML
Use a native number input when it meets the requirement. It provides the browser-managed spinbutton semantic and range-related behavior:

Use custom ARIA only when necessary
A custom implementation must provide a focusable element, an accessible name, role="spinbutton", synchronized value and range state, direct editing if offered, keyboard increment/decrement, pointer and touch support, validation, and clear disabled behavior. A minimal pattern might look like this:

Preserve normal cursor movement and text editing instead of capturing every arrow-key event. Keep aria-valuenow synchronized, and update aria-valuetext when the displayed meaning is not adequately represented by the number.

Test with keyboard, touch, voice control, and assistive technology. Native min, max, and step are preferable on native inputs; do not add redundant ARIA range attributes without a specific reason.

When another control is better
- Plain text input: Use it for arbitrary text, identifiers, complicated or delayed numeric validation, or extremely large ranges where stepping is inefficient.
- Select menu: Use it for a small set of allowed values or options with distinct names.
- Slider: Use it for approximate, proportional selection where direct typing is not essential.
- Date picker: Use it when choosing a calendar date is more understandable than editing separate numeric components.
For a large numeric range, direct entry or larger-step controls are more efficient than hundreds of arrow presses.

How do I increase a spin button without a mouse?
Focus the field and press the Up Arrow key. Down Arrow decreases it; Home and End may jump to limits when supported.
Can I type directly into a spin button?
Usually. Focus the value, replace or edit it, enter a valid number, and then leave the field or submit the form so validation can run.
Is a spin button the same as a slider?
No. A spin button is an editable, step-based numeric field; a slider is generally adjusted by moving a thumb and is better for approximate values.
Should developers use role=”spinbutton” or input type=”number”?
Prefer native input type=”number” when it meets the need. A custom role=”spinbutton” requires complete keyboard, pointer, naming, validation, and assistive-technology support.
The Bottom Line
Focus the field, type the exact value or use its up/down controls, and check the stated range and step. If the control is difficult to operate, keyboard entry or direct typing is usually the fastest accessible alternative.
