Capture the page first, validate the response, then pass the image in the format accepted by the OpenAI endpoint you choose. The example below uses ScreenshotOne for the do-it-yourself capture step; the OpenAI request shape and supported models can change, so verify the current official guide before deploying.
The two-stage workflow
Think of the task as two independent API calls joined by an image file or byte stream:
- Capture: send a URL, or supported HTML/Markdown input, to a screenshot service. It loads and renders the content and returns image data.
- Generate or edit: provide that image to an OpenAI image-capable workflow along with a prompt describing the desired analysis, transformation, or new image.
The capture call does not create or edit an image. It only turns rendered content into an image. Likewise, a screenshot service’s response URL is not automatically a valid image input for every OpenAI endpoint; use the representation accepted by the specific endpoint and model.
This distinction matters for prompts. If you need a redesigned mockup based on a page, say what should change and what should remain recognizable. If you only need a visual description, use an image-input workflow for analysis rather than asking an image-generation endpoint to invent a redesign. Do not assume a generative model will preserve every pixel or text element exactly.

Choose the capture request and output format
GET for a small URL capture
ScreenshotOne documents a /take endpoint that accepts a target URL and access key over HTTPS. A minimal conceptual request looks like this (the URL is percent-encoded in a real query string):

Because query parameters can be logged or exposed in browser history and infrastructure logs, make the request from a server you control rather than placing credentials in public client-side code.
POST JSON for richer options or supplied content
ScreenshotOne also documents POST requests with JSON options. Choose POST when numerous settings or HTML/Markdown input would make a query string cumbersome. Its current documentation states a maximum POST request body of 100 MiB; that is a ScreenshotOne request-body limit, not an OpenAI image-input limit. Check the live endpoint documentation for the exact accepted fields and constraints before sending large content.
ScreenshotOne documents capture inputs including a URL, HTML, or Markdown, plus output choices such as PNG, JPEG/JPG, WebP, GIF, JP2, TIFF, AVIF, HEIF, PDF, HTML, and Markdown. The documented default image format is JPG. For image-generation work, request an image format accepted by your downstream workflow, and confirm actual content type and bytes rather than inferring format from a filename.
PNG, JPEG, or WebP
PNG can be a useful starting point when sharp interface edges and text matter; JPEG or WebP may reduce payload size depending on the page and settings. There is no format winner established for every page: compare fidelity and payload size with your own content and workflow. Keep in mind that downstream endpoint support, dimensions, and request-size limits are specific to the OpenAI operation in use.

Capture a page with ScreenshotOne
The following Python example performs the capture server-side, checks HTTP status and content type, and writes the returned image bytes without decoding them as text. Install the dependency with python -m pip install requests. Set the access key in the environment; do not commit it to source control.

If you receive JSON or an error response instead of an image, do not save it as an image file: inspect the status and response body.
Pass the screenshot into an OpenAI workflow
OpenAI documents two relevant paths. The Image API supports focused image generation and editing operations. The Responses API supports image generation in a broader conversation or multi-step flow, and its image-input examples represent an image as an input_image item. Choose based on the task: one discrete generation/edit operation generally fits the Image API; a workflow that combines conversation, intermediate reasoning, or multiple steps may fit Responses.

Do not assume that an arbitrary screenshot-service URL can be passed directly. Depending on the selected workflow, use image bytes encoded as a data URL, an uploaded file reference/File ID, or another representation documented for that endpoint. The accepted formats, dimension limits, and request-size limits are endpoint-specific and should be checked in the current OpenAI documentation.

)This is pseudocode, not a runnable request: the exact SDK method, model identifier, image input encoding, and output handling depend on the current OpenAI API. The official image-generation guide documents both Image API and Responses API workflows, while the quickstart shows image input in a Responses message. Confirm current syntax and capabilities there before shipping.

Write a prompt that makes the output useful
Tell the model what role the screenshot plays and what result you expect. A practical prompt specifies the output, the changes, and constraints:
- Output: ask for a redesigned interface mockup, a visual variation, or a description—not an ambiguous “improve this.”
- Changes: name the elements to change, such as hierarchy, spacing, palette, or placement.
- Constraints: call out elements to retain, such as the page’s broad structure or brand colors, while recognizing that exact preservation is not guaranteed.
- Comparison: keep the original screenshot and review the generated result against it before using it.
For example: “Use this screenshot as a reference to create a cleaner landing-page mockup. Keep the main navigation, product image, and primary call to action, but increase whitespace and use a restrained blue-and-white palette. Return a single mockup.” This expresses intent without promising pixel-perfect reproduction.
Secure credentials and page content
- Use HTTPS for capture requests.
- Keep the screenshot provider’s access key on a server or in a secret manager. Do not expose it in browser JavaScript, a public repository, or a publicly shared URL.
- ScreenshotOne distinguishes its API access key from its secret key used for signing. Do not send a signing secret as the request credential.
- Only capture pages you are authorized to process. A screenshot can include personal, confidential, or account information; check current data-handling terms for both services before sending sensitive content to an image workflow.
The API mechanics alone do not establish a legal basis, consent requirement, retention period, or privacy guarantee for a particular use. Assess those obligations for your application and the services you use.

The capture request returns an error instead of an image
Check the HTTP status and parse the response as an error, not as image bytes. ScreenshotOne documents HTTP status semantics and JSON errors with a human-readable code and message. Verify the URL, access key, HTTPS endpoint, and option names against its getting-started guide. Do not assume a failed response can be fixed by changing the file extension.
The saved file is corrupt or unreadable
Confirm that the response status succeeded and that Content-Type is an image type. A JSON error body saved with a .png suffix is still JSON. Preserve the response as binary bytes and use an extension that matches the actual returned format.
The screenshot is incomplete or visually wrong
Check the capture options for rendering and wait behavior, viewport or full-page requirements, and any page content that appears only after interaction. ScreenshotOne’s options reference describes capture settings; select only the options your page needs. If the issue is missing content rather than image-generation behavior, fix capture first and inspect the saved screenshot before passing it onward.

Confirm that the request uses an image representation accepted by the chosen endpoint, and check current format, size, and dimension requirements. A URL returned by a screenshot service is not universally interchangeable with image bytes, an uploaded file, or a Responses input_image item. Also verify that the screenshot response was an image rather than an error payload.

The result does not preserve the source page exactly
Generation and editing are not a guarantee of exact reproduction. Make the requested changes explicit, keep the original screenshot for comparison, and use a non-generative rendering or design process if exact pixels or text must remain unchanged.
Keep the pipeline reliable and economical
Validate each stage separately: capture a known page, inspect the returned image, then test the OpenAI image operation with that image. This makes it easier to distinguish page-load, format, and prompt problems from endpoint or model changes. Set explicit timeouts, surface status and content-type errors in logs without logging secrets, and preserve the original capture when you need an audit trail or visual comparison.
For cost control, avoid sending a screenshot downstream until the capture response is confirmed to contain an image. Choose the smallest output dimensions and format that still serve the visual task, then check the OpenAI endpoint’s current input requirements. ScreenshotOne’s documented 100 MiB limit applies only to its POST body; it does not describe the allowed size of an OpenAI image request.
