To use GitHub’s remote MCP server, add GitHub’s hosted endpoint to an MCP-compatible client, authorize it with OAuth or—where your account and client allow— a personal access token (PAT), then choose the server’s tools in the client’s agent interface. For most users, this means configuring the server in an IDE rather than running the GitHub MCP server on their own computer. The standard endpoint is https://api.githubcopilot.com/mcp/; GitHub Enterprise Cloud with data residency uses an organization-specific endpoint.
What a remote GitHub MCP server does
Model Context Protocol (MCP) lets an AI client connect to tools provided by a server. In the remote setup, GitHub hosts the MCP service. You configure its URL in a compatible client, authenticate, and let the client present available GitHub actions in its agent or tool interface. You do not need to install and run the GitHub MCP server locally for this workflow.
That is different from merely asking an AI assistant a question about GitHub: with MCP configured, the client can use the tools the server exposes, subject to your authorization and any organization policies. GitHub recommends the remote option for most users in its setup guidance. A local server remains an alternative for MCP-compatible editors, but local and remote configurations do not necessarily expose the same toolsets.
Check your client, account, and endpoint
Confirm the client supports remote MCP
Remote MCP support and authentication controls depend on the host application. GitHub documents IDE workflows including Visual Studio Code, Visual Studio, JetBrains, Xcode, and Eclipse, but their interfaces differ. Check the current MCP instructions for the specific client you intend to use; do not assume a configuration file or OAuth flow for one IDE will work unchanged in another.

For the documented VS Code Copilot workflow, you need a GitHub account, Visual Studio Code, a configured GitHub MCP server, and an organization policy that permits “MCP servers in Copilot” if you use Copilot Business or Copilot Enterprise and that policy applies. Other clients may have different prerequisites.
Use the endpoint for your GitHub environment
- Standard GitHub endpoint:
https://api.githubcopilot.com/mcp/ - GitHub Enterprise Cloud with data residency: use the endpoint for your enterprise subdomain, following the pattern
https://copilot-api.SUBDOMAIN.ghe.com/mcp. For example, an enterprise hosted athttps://octocorp.ghe.comuseshttps://copilot-api.octocorp.ghe.com/mcp.
The enterprise pattern is specifically for GitHub Enterprise Cloud with data residency. Do not substitute it for the standard endpoint merely because your organization has an enterprise account; use the endpoint that matches your organization’s environment.

Configure the remote server in VS Code
GitHub documents a VS Code route through Copilot Chat and a server-gallery route. Labels and controls can shift between client versions, so if a label differs, consult GitHub’s current “Using the GitHub MCP Server in your IDE” and “Setting up the GitHub MCP Server” documentation rather than copying another editor’s settings.

- Open the MCP server configuration route. In VS Code, use the MCP server gallery to find and install the GitHub MCP server, or follow GitHub’s documented Copilot Chat configuration flow to add a remote HTTP/SSE server. The gallery route should leave the server visible in the configured-server list.
- Set the server URL. For a standard GitHub environment, enter
https://api.githubcopilot.com/mcp/. If your organization uses GitHub Enterprise Cloud with data residency, enter its matching enterprise-specific URL instead. - Authorize the connection. For OAuth, use the client’s Auth action or the sign-in prompt that appears when connecting. Review the requested authorization and complete the GitHub sign-in flow.
- Check that the server is available. Return to the configured-server list and confirm that the GitHub server is present and enabled. In VS Code, open Copilot Chat and select Agent before looking for the server’s tools.
- Inspect the available tools. Open Configure tools in Copilot Chat. Review which GitHub actions are available before asking the agent to use one; the tool list can depend on the server’s toolset configuration.
- Ask for a bounded task. Give the agent a clear request, such as retrieving repository details, listing pull requests, or creating an issue. Provide identifying details it needs, review any permission prompt, and check the resulting change in GitHub.
Choose OAuth or a personal access token
OAuth: the documented default
GitHub documents one-click OAuth as the default authentication method for the remote server. The access granted is limited to the scopes you approve, and organization policy can further restrict scopes or which applications are permitted. If an organization blocks an OAuth app or limits available permissions, ask its administrator whether the client is allowed before repeatedly retrying authorization. GitHub notes exceptions in its policy guidance for VS Code and Visual Studio.

- Programming Lessons: This raspberry pi 5 learning kit ships with step by step instructions and provides 21 lessons to take you through identifying components reading code and running it in the terminal
PAT: an alternative where supported
GitHub also documents PAT authentication, but it is not available in every account environment. For Enterprise Managed Users, PATs are disabled by default unless an enterprise administrator enables them. If you use a PAT, make sure it is valid and has the permissions needed for the operation you intend to perform.
Treat a PAT as a secret: do not paste a real token into an example, commit it to a shared configuration file, or send it in a chat prompt. Use the client’s supported secure credential flow. If a PAT has been exposed, revoke it and create a replacement through GitHub rather than continuing to use it.

- 256 GB PCIe Pi NVMe SSD (Pre-loaded with Pi 64-Bit OS)

Use toolsets deliberately
The GitHub MCP server offers standard toolsets and supports customization. GitHub identifies copilot and github_support_docs_search as remote-only toolset options. Depending on the configuration route, toolsets can be enabled with URL path parameters (for one toolset) or HTTP headers (for multiple toolsets). Local server configurations use command-line flags or environment variables instead.
Do not assume every tool is enabled just because the server connects. Check the current GitHub toolset documentation and the tools shown by your client. A narrower tool selection can make the agent’s available actions clearer; the appropriate set depends on what you need the agent to do and what your organization permits.

Remote IDE setup is not repository-level Copilot MCP
Configuring the hosted server in an IDE is a different use case from configuring MCP for Copilot cloud agent or code review at the repository level. GitHub says repository-configured MCP for those contexts does not currently support remote MCP servers that use OAuth. Those contexts support MCP tools, but not server resources or prompts. GitHub also warns that, once a server is configured there, Copilot can use the provided tools autonomously without asking for approval.
That distinction matters when choosing a setup: an IDE connection that works with OAuth does not establish that the same server configuration will work for cloud agent or code review. Review the repository-level rules and the consequences of autonomous tool use before enabling tools in that context.

Troubleshoot connection and tool problems
Authorization fails or the server keeps asking you to sign in
- Confirm the client is signed into the intended GitHub account and retry its OAuth sign-in flow.
- If using a PAT, check that it has not expired or been revoked and that its permissions cover the requested operation.
- If you are in an organization-managed account, ask an administrator whether MCP access, the OAuth app, or the requested scopes are restricted.
- If you are an Enterprise Managed User, confirm PAT use is enabled before choosing token authentication.
The server connects, but no tools appear
- In VS Code, select Agent in Copilot Chat and open Configure tools; the standard chat interface may not expose the agent’s tool controls.
- Confirm the GitHub server is present and enabled in the configured-server list, then inspect its selected toolsets.
- Verify that the host application supports the remote connection method you configured. Remote support and tool availability vary by client.
The agent cannot perform the requested action
- Check that the relevant tool is enabled and that the authenticated account has access to the target repository or resource.
- Look for an additional permission prompt, missing repository identifier, or organization policy restriction.
- If the request is running in repository-level Copilot cloud agent or code review, check its separate remote OAuth limitation rather than assuming the IDE configuration applies.
The connection works in one GitHub environment but not another
Verify the URL against the account environment. The general endpoint and the GitHub Enterprise Cloud with data residency endpoint are not interchangeable. For a managed enterprise, ask the administrator which subdomain and MCP endpoint apply.
Quick Recap
Keep the setup reliable and appropriately scoped
- Start with a read-oriented request. First ask the agent to retrieve repository information or list pull requests, then move to a change such as creating an issue after verifying the connection and the account’s access.
- Be specific about targets. Include the repository and relevant issue or pull request details in your request so the agent is less likely to act on the wrong context.
- Review changes and permissions. Tool availability is not the same as unrestricted access; OAuth scopes, account permissions, PAT permissions, and organization rules all affect what can happen.
- Recheck version-sensitive details. Client controls, supported authentication methods, and GitHub toolsets can change. Consult GitHub’s current IDE, toolset, and MCP setup guidance when a label or behavior differs from the steps above.
