The safest way to add image generation to a Node.js application is to keep the OpenAI SDK on your server, load OPENAI_API_KEY from the environment, and verify the current Images API example before wiring in a model-specific request. The SDK installation and client setup are stable; model names, image method signatures, response properties, and supported options can change.
What you need before writing code
- A supported server-side Node.js project. OpenAI’s JavaScript quickstart documents Node.js support and the official
openaipackage: Developer quickstart — OpenAI API. - An OpenAI API key with permission to use the image endpoint you select.
- A server runtime, not browser-only JavaScript. Keep the key out of client bundles, HTML, mobile apps and public repositories.
- A decision about the image model, dimensions, quality, output format and whether you need streaming.
Install the official Node.js SDK
In an existing project, install the package with npm:

Initialize the client and select an image workflow
Client initialization is independent of the image model:

Do not copy its text-generation example and change the prompt field: image requests use the Images API’s own endpoint, models and response format. Open the current Image Streaming API reference and the linked image-generation guide, then use the exact JavaScript method shown there for the model enabled in your account.
Choose the model and request settings
The model catalog currently describes GPT Image 1 as a state-of-the-art image-generation model and GPT Image 1 mini as a cost-efficient version. Availability and naming are not permanent, so confirm the live catalog before deployment: OpenAI Models.

Build a generation function without exposing secrets
Because the exact current SDK generation method and response property were not established by the available official snippets, avoid hard-coding an unverified signature. Use a small server function that validates input and isolates the model-specific call. Replace the marked section with the exact example from the current official image-generation guide.

}This pattern is intentionally strict: a failed deployment is preferable to silently relying on a method or response property that may no longer exist. Once you have verified the live example, keep the call in this server module and return only the image bytes or a controlled URL to your application’s frontend.
Save or return the generated image
Image responses may contain base64-encoded image data, particularly in completed streaming events. The streaming reference describes those events as suitable for rendering, but you must verify the exact JavaScript event and property names for the endpoint you use before decoding them: Image Streaming — OpenAI API Reference.
When the current guide gives you a base64 field, the Node.js handling pattern is:

}Use the MIME type and extension that the response actually declares. Do not label WebP or JPEG bytes as PNG. For an HTTP endpoint in your own application, set the corresponding Content-Type, avoid logging the base64 payload, and impose a request-size limit.
Streaming versus waiting for completion
Use a single completed response when
- Your job queue can wait for the whole image before storing it.
- You want the simplest retry and error path.
- The caller does not need progressive updates.
Use streaming when
- Your UI benefits from receiving partial image events.
- You can keep a connection open and process events in order.
- You have cancellation, timeout and partial-result handling.
Streaming adds protocol work: reconnect behavior, duplicate-event protection, cancellation and cleanup of incomplete files. The reference documents completed image events with base64 data; verify whether your chosen model emits partial events, completed events or both before designing the consumer.
Data retention and model choice
OpenAI’s data-controls documentation specifically states that image generation with gpt-image-1 and gpt-image-1-mini is Zero Data Retention compatible, while DALL·E 2 and DALL·E 3 are not. That statement applies to those named models and should not be generalized to every endpoint or form of API data handling. If retention is a requirement, record the model and endpoint used for each job, prevent prompts and returned image data from entering ordinary application logs, and confirm the policy again when changing models.
Reliability, performance and cost considerations
Timeouts and retries
- Set an application timeout longer than the expected generation time, but finite enough to release stuck requests.
- Retry only transient transport or service failures. Do not blindly retry authentication errors, invalid parameters or policy refusals.
- Use an idempotency strategy in your job system so a client retry does not create unintended duplicate images.
Concurrency
Bound simultaneous generations with a queue or semaphore. A burst of requests can exhaust your process memory when several base64 responses are held at once. Stream or write each completed result promptly, then release buffers.
Format and storage
PNG is useful when lossless output or transparency is required; JPEG and WebP may be smaller for delivery, subject to the endpoint’s documented support. Measure your own storage and bandwidth needs rather than assuming one format is always faster.
Pricing and latency

Common errors and fixes
“OPENAI_API_KEY is not set”
The process cannot see the environment variable. Export it in the same shell that starts Node, verify your deployment secret name, and restart the process. Never solve this by placing the key in browser code.
401 or authentication failures
Check that the key is active, belongs to the intended project and has not been copied with surrounding quotes or whitespace. Rotate it if it was committed or exposed.

Invalid model, size, quality or format
Those values are endpoint- and model-dependent. Compare the request with the current image-generation guide and model catalog; do not assume a value listed for one model works for another.
Cannot find the response image field
Streaming and non-streaming responses can expose different structures. Inspect the documented event schema for the exact endpoint and log only metadata, never the image payload.

Requests hang or terminate mid-image
Check proxy and server timeouts, use a bounded abort signal, and make your consumer tolerate incomplete streams. For queued work, persist job state separately from the connection that initiated it.
The output is unexpectedly large
Confirm the requested dimensions and format, then write the result directly to storage instead of keeping multiple base64 copies in memory.
