To let Cursor inspect a running Next.js app, use the official next-devtools-mcp bridge with Next.js 16 or later. Add its configuration, start the development server, and enable the server in Cursor’s MCP controls. The bridge gives Cursor development-time context such as routes, errors, runtime state, and logs; it is different from building and deploying your own application MCP endpoint.
Choose the right kind of Next.js MCP server
“Next.js MCP server” can mean two different things. Pick based on what you want Cursor—or another MCP client—to do:
| Option | Purpose | Where it runs | Endpoint or configuration |
|---|---|---|---|
| Next.js dev-tools bridge | Let a coding agent inspect a running app while you develop | Alongside a local Next.js development server | next-devtools-mcp; the Next.js dev server provides /_next/mcp |
| Custom application MCP route | Expose tools that your application defines to MCP clients | As part of the application and its deployment | A route such as app/mcp/route.ts, served at /mcp in the Vercel example |
For Cursor-assisted development, start with the dev-tools bridge. It is not a production database or shell interface, and it does not make a deployed app’s internals available by itself. Build a custom route when you need application-owned tools, authentication, and a separately operated endpoint. The two endpoint paths, /_next/mcp and /mcp, are not interchangeable.

Prerequisites for the official development bridge
- A Next.js project running Next.js 16 or later. The official integration’s stated minimum is Next.js 16.
- Cursor with MCP support, and permission to run the package through
npx. - The project’s usual package manager and development command. This setup does not require replacing your project’s package manager.
The integration is for coding agents that connect to a running development server. If the project is on an earlier Next.js version, do not expect this official bridge setup to work; upgrade or use a separately designed MCP server instead.

Set up the Next.js bridge for Cursor
1. Add the Next.js MCP configuration
At the repository root, create .mcp.json with the official bridge command:
{
"mcpServers": {
"next-devtools": {
"command": "npx",
"args": ["-y", "next-devtools-mcp@latest"]
}
}
}
The -y option lets npx proceed without pausing for an interactive install confirmation. The @latest tag means the package version selected can change over time; if your team needs repeatable dependency resolution, agree on a versioning policy rather than assuming the tag stays fixed.
2. Start or restart the development server
Run the project’s normal development command, for example:

npm run dev
The bridge discovers a running Next.js instance. If the dev server was already running when you added the configuration, restart it so the integration can discover the app. Keep that development server running while you ask Cursor for live project context.
3. Make sure Cursor has a configuration it reads
Next.js documents the root .mcp.json setup. Cursor documents project MCP configuration at .cursor/mcp.json and global configuration at ~/.cursor/mcp.json. If Cursor does not load the root configuration, register the same local command in the project-specific Cursor file:
{
"mcpServers": {
"next-devtools": {
"command": "npx",
"args": ["-y", "next-devtools-mcp@latest"]
}
}
}
Use one authoritative project configuration rather than maintaining duplicate entries in multiple files. Cursor says project configuration takes priority over a global entry with the same server name. A shared project file is useful when the team wants the same MCP setup; a global file is appropriate for a personal server configuration across projects.

4. Enable it and try a task that needs live context
Open Cursor’s Customize/MCP controls and verify that next-devtools is enabled. Then ask a question grounded in the running app, such as “Inspect the current Next.js build errors” or “List the routes in the running app.” Cursor considers available MCP tools and may ask you to approve a tool call. Review the requested action before approving it; if the tools are disabled or a request remains unapproved, Cursor will not use them.
What Cursor can inspect through the bridge
Next.js 16 includes a development-server endpoint at /_next/mcp; next-devtools-mcp discovers the running instance and forwards requests to it. The documented capabilities include:
- Build, runtime, and type errors.
- Live state queries and development logs.
- Route, component, and rendering metadata.
- Server Action and component-hierarchy inspection.
That context can help Cursor diagnose a current development issue without requiring you to paste every error or route detail into chat. Its usefulness depends on having the relevant app running and on the requested information being among the bridge’s available tools. It does not imply unrestricted access to production data or a remote deployment.

When to build an application-owned MCP route instead
Use a custom MCP server when you want to define the tools your product exposes—for example, tools governed by your own application logic, authentication, and deployment lifecycle. A Vercel-maintained Next.js example uses mcp-handler and the MCP TypeScript SDK in an App Router handler at app/mcp/route.ts; its local endpoint is http://localhost:3000/mcp. The example states that Node.js 20 or later is required for Vercel deployment.
This is a separate implementation, not a different way of naming the dev-tools endpoint. The dev-tools integration is tied to a running development server and helps an agent inspect the project. A custom route is application code that you operate and expose to MCP clients; you must choose its tools, access controls, transport, and deployment behavior.

Cursor documents stdio, SSE, and Streamable HTTP transports. For this local workflow, the command-and-arguments configuration runs the bridge as a local process over stdio. Remote servers use a URL and may require authentication configuration; choose the transport supported by the server rather than treating a local command entry as a remote connection.

Keep credentials out of committed configuration. Cursor supports environment variables and OAuth flows in relevant setups, but its stdio-only envFile option does not apply to remote servers. For remote configuration, use the server’s supported authentication method and Cursor’s supported environment-variable interpolation or another appropriate secret mechanism. Do not put an API key or other secret directly in a repository file.
Common problems and fixes
- The server does not appear in Cursor: Check the spelling and location of the file. The Next.js bridge guide uses root
.mcp.json; Cursor project and global files are.cursor/mcp.jsonand~/.cursor/mcp.json. Confirm Cursor is configured to read the file you used, then restart Cursor to reload its configuration. - Cursor cannot find a running app: Start the project with its development command, such as
npm run dev. The bridge needs a running Next.js development instance; restart the dev server if it was already running before setup. - The project is on an unsupported Next.js version: Verify the version in the project. The official integration requires Next.js 16 or later; no official documentation establishes support for earlier releases.
- A tool call is not happening: Check the enabled state in Cursor’s MCP controls and respond to any approval prompt. Availability does not mean every tool call is automatically approved.
- The client is pointed at the wrong URL: For dev-tools introspection, the Next.js development server’s built-in path is
/_next/mcp. For the custom application example, the route is/mcp. Confirm which architecture the server implements before changing a URL. - A remote server rejects authentication: Verify the configured URL, transport, headers or environment-variable interpolation, and the authentication method supported by that server. Remote setup differs from a local stdio process.
Visual screenshots are a separate task
The Next.js dev-tools bridge supplies project context; it is not the same thing as rendering a page to an image. If you also need a screenshot of a publicly reachable page for visual QA, reports, or documentation, ScreenshotNeo is a separate website screenshot API and MCP server for developers. It does not replace the Next.js bridge or expose the app’s internal development state.
Or skip the browser setup
For a publicly reachable page, one GET request returns an image or PDF. For example, this cURL call saves a WebP screenshot of Stripe:
Recommended Free Tools
curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp
See the ScreenshotNeo API documentation for the request options. Equivalent Python and Node.js examples:
import requests
r = requests.get("https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot", params={"access_key": "YOUR_API_KEY", "url": "https://stripe.com"}, timeout=90)
open("shot.webp", "wb").write(r.content)
const q = new URLSearchParams({ access_key: 'YOUR_API_KEY', url: 'https://stripe.com' });
const res = await fetch(`https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot?${q}`);
ScreenshotNeo removes supported cookie banners, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before capture; bot checks, blank pages, and failed loads are not billed. Its MCP server offers take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf tools for AI agents, including Cursor and Claude. The Free plan includes 1,000 screenshots per month with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000. Sign up for the free plan.
Cost and operational considerations
The Next.js bridge setup uses npx to run the package and requires a running development server; the sources cited for this setup do not state a separate bridge price, performance figure, or availability guarantee. Its operational dependency is the local development instance: without that instance, the bridge cannot discover the app to inspect. The custom-route approach has a different lifecycle because it is code deployed and operated with the application.
For team use, decide whether the MCP configuration belongs in the repository or only in a developer’s global Cursor settings. Share only the command configuration, not credentials. When changing the setup, update the authoritative file and reload the relevant process—Cursor for its config, and the Next.js dev server when it was running before the bridge was configured.
