To capture an entire webpage in Chrome, install a reputable screenshot extension, open the page, click the extension’s toolbar button, choose its full-page mode, wait while it scrolls and assembles the page, then export the image or PDF. Before installing, review the extension’s current permissions and privacy disclosure in the Chrome Web Store. The exact controls and output quality vary by publisher and can change over time.
What a Chrome screenshot plugin actually does
A normal screenshot records only the pixels currently visible in the browser window. A full-page extension captures the document in sections—usually by scrolling through it—and combines those sections into one long image or a PDF. Because the page is rendered repeatedly, the result is not always identical to a single instant viewport capture.
- Visible-area capture: Saves only what is currently on screen.
- Selected or custom-area capture: Lets you draw or specify a region, when the extension supports it.
- Full-page capture: Scrolls through the document and stitches the sections together.
Lazy-loaded images, sticky headers, animations, cookie dialogs and pages that change while scrolling can affect the final file. Always inspect the exported result before you publish or send it.
Choose an extension safely
Check permissions and data practices
On the extension’s Chrome Web Store page, read the requested permissions, publisher name, privacy disclosure and recent update information. Chrome’s guidance says extensions should request only the narrowest permissions needed for their existing features. If an extension handles user data, its listing should explain collection and use practices and provide a privacy policy. Those statements are the publisher’s disclosures, not an independent security audit.

Install and configure a Chrome page screenshot plugin
- Open the Chrome Web Store. Search for the extension by its current name and open the publisher’s listing rather than installing an similarly named copy.
- Review the listing. Check permissions, privacy disclosures, supported formats, reviews and the last update. Avoid an extension whose access is broader than its capture features require.
- Select “Add to Chrome.” Confirm the permissions dialog only after you understand what access is being requested.
- Pin the extension. Use Chrome’s Extensions (puzzle-piece) menu and pin the screenshot tool so its icon is visible in the toolbar.
- Open the target page in a stable state. Wait for the main content to load, dismiss consent or sign-in prompts when appropriate, and stop video or animations if they could change the layout.
- Start the capture. Click the extension icon. For GoFullPage, the publisher also documents Alt+Shift+P.
Take a full-page screenshot
- Scroll to the top of the page before starting. This gives the extension a predictable starting point.
- Choose Full page, Capture entire page or the equivalent command. The label differs by extension.
- Keep the tab open and do not interact with the page while capture runs. The extension may scroll section by section, wait for images and stitch the sections.
- Wait for the preview or export screen. Interrupting the process can produce a partial file.
- Review the top, middle and bottom of the result. Look for duplicated headers, missing lazy-loaded images, blank bands, clipped fixed elements or content that changed during scrolling.
- Export in the format you need. GoFullPage’s listing describes image and PDF output. For an exceptionally large page, it warns that the result may be split into several images in separate tabs.
Capture only what is visible
Use the extension’s Visible area or equivalent mode when you need a faithful record of the current viewport, such as a dialog or a transient error message. This avoids the scrolling and stitching behavior of full-page mode.
Capture a specific region
If the extension offers Custom area, drag around the content you want and confirm the selection. This is useful for a chart or card without exposing surrounding page content. A custom selection is different from capturing a DOM element by its CSS selector; the extensions described here document screen-area selection rather than selector-based automation.
Edit, redact and annotate
Full Page Screen Capture’s listing describes a built-in editor with annotation and redaction tools, plus PNG, JPG and PDF export. Use redaction before sharing credentials, email addresses, order numbers or other personal information. If your chosen extension lacks redaction, edit a copy in a trusted image or PDF editor and keep the original private.

Why captures fail or look wrong
Sticky headers and duplicated elements
A fixed navigation bar can appear in every stitched section. Some extensions detect and suppress it; others do not. Try disabling the site’s sticky behavior with custom CSS when the extension supports it, or capture the page in smaller sections and join them manually.
Lazy-loaded images are missing
Scroll through the page once before capturing so images enter the viewport and load. Wait for network activity to settle, then return to the top and run the full-page command again. A page that loads images only after interaction may still require separate section captures.
Content is duplicated or omitted
Dynamic feeds, carousels and ads can change between scroll passes. Freeze the page where possible, pause autoplay media and capture a stable copy. If the site uses virtual scrolling, the browser may never hold the entire list in the document at once; a plugin cannot capture content that the page has not rendered.
The page stops partway down
Check whether a sign-in wall, bot check, cross-origin frame or browser error appeared during scrolling. Reload, complete any legitimate verification, close obstructive overlays and retry. Very long pages can exceed image or tab limits; use the extension’s split-output behavior or capture logical sections separately.

The shortcut does nothing
Chrome or another extension may already use the key combination, or the focus may be inside a restricted page such as a browser settings tab. Click the extension icon instead, then change the shortcut in Chrome’s extensions shortcut settings if the publisher supports it.
PDF pagination is poor
A stitched image and a paginated PDF are different outputs. Long lines, fixed headers and narrow margins can produce awkward page breaks. If the extension exposes paper size, orientation or margins, adjust them; otherwise use the image export for a single continuous record.
Privacy and security checklist
- Install from the official Chrome Web Store listing and verify the publisher.
- Read the requested permissions in plain language. A screenshot tool may need access to page content to capture it, but unrelated permissions deserve scrutiny.
- Read the privacy policy for claims about collection, retention, transfers and third-party services.
- Do not capture passwords, payment details or private dashboards unless the extension and your organization’s policy allow it.
- Remove the extension when you no longer need it, or disable it on sensitive sites through Chrome’s site-access controls.
- Store exported files with appropriate access controls; a screenshot can contain the same confidential information as the source page.
Performance and reliability tips
- Use a wired or stable connection for pages with remote images and fonts.
- Close unnecessary tabs when capturing a very long page so Chrome has enough memory to assemble the image.
- Capture after fonts, images and embedded charts finish loading.
- Prefer a stable, non-personalized URL when you need repeatable results.
- Keep the browser zoom at 100% unless you intentionally need a different scale.
- Compare the screenshot with the live page at the same moment when documenting a bug; dynamic content can change between captures.
When a browser extension is the wrong tool
Extensions are convenient for an occasional manual capture, but they require a logged-in browser session, a desktop tab and a repeatable human workflow. They are less suitable for scheduled monitoring, bulk URL capture, server-side jobs, or an automated pipeline that must report whether a page loaded successfully.

Can I capture a Chrome settings or new-tab page with an extension?
Usually not. Chrome restricts extensions on browser-internal pages; open the public webpage you need instead.

Will a full-page screenshot include content below the fold?
Yes, when the page renders that content during the extension’s scrolling pass. Virtualized lists, blocked resources and content revealed only by interaction can still be absent.
Is a stitched screenshot the same as a PDF?
No. A stitched image is one continuous canvas, while a PDF is paginated and may introduce page breaks, margins and scaling.
