Upscaling estimates pixels between or around existing ones; it cannot recover detail that was never captured. Keep the original and inspect the exported copy at its actual display or print size.
What upscaling a PNG can—and cannot—do
A PNG’s width and height in pixels describe how much image data it contains. Resampling creates a larger pixel grid and estimates the values of the added pixels from the source. The new file may look smoother or more detailed at a larger size, but it is not a higher-quality capture of details absent from the original. Adobe makes the same distinction in its explanation of image size, resolution, and resampling.
Decide the target in pixels before resizing. A resolution or PPI setting by itself does not add pixels; pixel dimensions and the intended physical print size together determine the effective pixel density. Preserve the aspect ratio unless you deliberately want to stretch or compress the image. Save to a new file so you can compare the result with the original.
Choose a method for the kind of image

Adobe describes Photoshop’s resampling options, including Nearest Neighbor for preserving hard edges, Bicubic Smoother for enlargement, and Preserve Details 2.0 with a Reduce Noise control. There is no universally best choice; judge a test export at the size and background where it will actually be used.

Upscale in Photoshop with conventional resampling
- Open a copy. In Photoshop, open the PNG and use Save a Copy or otherwise preserve the original before resizing.
- Open Image Size. Choose Image > Image Size. Note the current pixel width and height so you can return to them if needed.
- Set the target dimensions. Enter the desired width or height in pixels. Keep the proportions linked/constrained so changing one dimension updates the other. Adobe’s image resizing guidance covers the workflow and controls.
- Enable resampling. With Resample enabled, Photoshop changes the pixel dimensions. Choose Preserve Details 2.0 or Bicubic Smoother as a starting point for a photo or smooth image; try Nearest Neighbor for pixel art or graphics where sharp, block-like edges matter.
- Preview and adjust. Examine critical edges and textures at 100% and at the intended viewing size. If Preserve Details 2.0 makes grain or artifacts prominent, adjust its Reduce Noise control and compare again.
- Export a new PNG. Use a distinct filename. Check the saved file’s pixel dimensions and inspect any transparent edges over light and dark backgrounds.
Changing the resolution/PPI field without resampling changes the relationship between pixel dimensions and physical print size; it does not enlarge the pixel grid. For an enlargement, make sure resampling is enabled and enter the target pixel dimensions.
Use Generative Upscale when estimated detail is useful
Photoshop’s documented route is Image > Generative Upscale. Adobe’s help page, last updated 2026-05-20, describes 2x or 4x output choices, model selection, and a result created in a new document: Enhance image quality with Generative Upscale in Photoshop.
That page lists model limits that are product- and access-sensitive: Firefly Upscaler up to 6144 × 6144 px, Topaz Gigapixel up to 56 megapixels with a premium subscription, and Topaz Bloom up to 9 megapixels with a premium subscription. Confirm availability and limits in the current Photoshop interface and your plan before relying on them.
AI upscaling interprets the image to generate plausible texture or detail. It may make a face, a letter, or a fine line look convincing while changing what the source actually shows. Compare important features directly with the original, especially where accuracy matters. Use conventional resampling or a better source instead when interpretation would be unacceptable.

Preserve and check PNG transparency
A PNG can include an alpha channel, which stores transparency. After exporting, place the image over both a light and a dark background and inspect the edges. Look for a colored fringe, a pale halo, or transparent regions that became opaque. If the source has transparency, test the exact editor and export route you intend to use: the cited documentation does not establish that every AI model preserves transparency in every workflow.
ImageMagick documents alpha-channel controls in its command-line options reference. Those controls can help with alpha-related processing, but they do not remove the need to inspect the output. For a logo, icon, or geometric illustration, a vector original or a higher-resolution source is often a more faithful starting point than generating replacement pixels.
How much should you enlarge it?
Set the target from the actual use rather than enlarging arbitrarily. For a web image, use the pixel dimensions needed by the page or display. For print, start with the intended physical dimensions and the pixel density required by the print workflow; changing PPI alone does not create image detail. The supplied Adobe guidance establishes the relationship between pixel dimensions, resolution, and resampling, but does not prescribe one universal print PPI.
- Keep the aspect ratio constrained to avoid accidental distortion.
- Make a modest test enlargement first if the target size is flexible; compare alternatives rather than assuming a larger scale is better.
- Review text, faces, repeated patterns, and thin lines at the intended output size as well as at close zoom.
- Use the original file as the comparison reference and keep it unchanged.
Common problems and fixes
The enlarged PNG still looks blurry
Resampling cannot recreate missing source detail. Try a different resampling method and inspect at the final viewing size. If the image is important and a sharper source exists, use it; for a photo where generated texture is acceptable, test an AI upscale and verify meaningful features.

Pixel art has soft or uneven edges
Use Nearest Neighbor rather than a smoothing method. Check the result at its intended display size to ensure the enlarged blocks still look deliberate.
Thin lines or small text look wrong after AI upscaling
Generated detail is an estimate, not evidence of what the source contained. Compare the affected characters and lines with the original. If exact lettering or line geometry matters, prefer a higher-resolution or vector source, or a conventional resampling result.
The image looks stretched
Return to the original and resize again with the aspect ratio constrained. If the target shape differs from the source, crop or add canvas rather than distorting the image unless stretching is intentional.
Transparent edges have a halo
Inspect the exported PNG on both light and dark backgrounds. Try another resampling or export route and verify the alpha channel; do not assume an AI workflow preserved transparency correctly.

The file’s PPI changed but its pixel dimensions did not
That is a resolution/print-size adjustment, not an upscale. Enable resampling and enter new pixel dimensions when the goal is to enlarge the pixel grid.
Photoshop’s model or output limit differs from a tutorial
Generative Upscale options and model limits can change with product version and subscription access. Check the current Photoshop interface and Adobe’s current help page rather than relying on an older menu or limit.
