Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →To upload a large image to WordPress, first check the maximum size shown at Media > Add New. If the file exceeds it, reduce the image’s file size or ask your host to raise the PHP upload limits. If it fits but WordPress cannot process it, check the image dimensions, format, and server image-processing support.
Check the upload limit WordPress is using
-
In your WordPress dashboard, open Media > Add New and note the maximum upload size shown by the uploader. The displayed limit depends on the site’s server configuration.
-
For more detail, open Tools > Site Health > Info and inspect the Media Handling and Server sections. Look for the maximum uploaded file size, maximum POST size, effective file size, file-upload availability, supported file formats, and whether GD or Imagick is available. WordPress documents these diagnostics in its Site Health screen guide.
There are two different limits to keep in mind: a file’s size in bytes (such as megabytes) and its dimensions in pixels. A file can be under the byte limit and still fail during image processing, or have large dimensions while remaining small enough to upload.

If the file exceeds the byte limit
Reduce the file before uploading
Resize or compress the image with an image editor or optimization tool, then try the upload again. This is often the quickest option if you do not control the server settings. Choose dimensions that suit the image’s intended use rather than uploading a camera-original file for a small page element.
Ask your host to raise PHP limits
If you manage the site’s PHP configuration, increase upload_max_filesize and post_max_size in the hosting control panel or php.ini. WordPress’s PHP Optimization handbook says post_max_size must be greater than or equal to upload_max_filesize: WordPress PHP Optimization.

WordPress calculates the effective upload limit from the smaller of those PHP values. The wp_max_upload_size() function returns that effective limit and applies the upload_size_limit filter; a plugin or theme may use that filter to alter the value WordPress reports. See the function reference.
Changing PHP values may not be possible from WordPress itself. Hosts can restrict upload settings or enforce other request limits, including timeouts. If the hosting panel does not expose these settings, ask the provider to confirm the effective limits and whether they can be changed.

If the image is large in pixels or fails during processing
WordPress’s documented default big_image_size_threshold is 2560 pixels. When an image exceeds the threshold, WordPress scales it down during processing; it does not change the PHP byte limit needed to receive the original upload. The threshold can be changed by site code or a plugin. See the WordPress developer reference.
If the upload limit is sufficient but processing still fails, check Site Health for GD or Imagick support, whether uploads are enabled, the server’s supported formats, and whether wp-content/uploads is writable. If the image is corrupt or in an unsupported format, export a fresh copy in a format supported by your server and retry. Do not assume every WordPress server accepts every format: support depends on the current PHP image-processing configuration.

Choose an image format and upload method
| Approach | Best suited to | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Resize or compress before upload | Files that exceed the current byte limit, or images whose full dimensions are unnecessary | Reduces transfer and storage needs, but requires preparing the image outside WordPress. |
| Let WordPress scale a very large image | Images above the default 2560-pixel threshold, when the original can upload and server processing succeeds | WordPress creates a scaled image as part of processing; this does not bypass the upload-size limit. |
| Use WebP | Sites whose server supports WebP and workflows that prioritize smaller image files | WordPress supports WebP starting with version 5.8. WordPress Core reported an average reduction of about 30% in file size at similar visual quality in its 2022 comparison; results vary by image. See WordPress Core’s WebP support announcement. |
| Use JPEG or PNG | Cases where the existing workflow or image requirements call for those formats and the server supports them | File size depends on image content, export settings, and whether transparency or other image characteristics are needed. |
| Use an optimization plugin or service | Sites that need repeated compression, resizing, or format conversion | Can automate image preparation, but adds a separate tool to configure and check for compatibility. |
Insert an appropriate image size on the page
After a successful upload, WordPress generates image sub-sizes according to the site’s media settings. Those settings define the maximum width and height for thumbnail, medium, and large sizes; see Media Settings. When inserting the image, select a size appropriate for the layout instead of using the full-size original by default.
WordPress also adds responsive image attributes such as srcset and sizes. These allow a browser to choose a suitable generated file for the displayed image and viewport. See Responsive Images in WordPress.
