Upload the image to a service, change its access to the people you intend to reach, choose read-only access, and copy the generated link. For a general-purpose file link, Google Drive is the clearest workflow: open the file’s sharing dialog, set General access to Anyone with the link when recipients should not sign in, select Viewer, and copy the link. Keep Restricted access and add named people when the image is private.
A link is only useful if the underlying file permissions allow the recipient to open it. Treat an anyone-with-the-link URL like a bearer credential: anyone who receives it may be able to pass it on.
Choose the kind of link you need
Before uploading, decide whether the URL should open one image file, a collection of photos, or a public image-hosting post. Also decide whether recipients are named individuals or anyone who has the URL.

Google Drive: create a link to one image
Upload the file
- Open Google Drive and sign in.
- Select New followed by File upload, choose the image, and wait for the upload to finish. You can also drag the file into a Drive folder.
- Right-click the uploaded image (or use the three-dot menu on mobile) and choose Share.
Set the audience and role
- In General access, leave the setting as Restricted for named recipients, or choose Anyone with the link when a person should open it without an individual invitation.
- Set the role to Viewer for ordinary image sharing. Use Commenter or Editor only when collaboration requires those permissions.
- For restricted sharing, enter email addresses, confirm the role, and send the invitation.
- Select Copy link, then paste the URL into your message, website, document or chat.
Google states that when you share a link to a file, your name and email are visible as the owner of that file. If that identity disclosure is unacceptable, use a different service or a sharing arrangement that meets your privacy requirements.

Verify the link before sending
- Open a private/incognito browser window, or use a browser profile that is not signed in to the owner account.
- Paste the URL and confirm that the image opens with the expected permission. If the window asks for access, the file is still restricted or the recipient’s account is not included.
- Check the parent folder’s permissions. A folder can grant broader access than the file-level dialog suggests.
Stop access later
Return to Share, change Anyone with the link back to Restricted, or remove an individual. Revoking access prevents future opens through Drive, but you cannot control copies someone already downloaded.
Google Photos: share an album or photo collection
- Open Google Photos, select the photos, and choose Share followed by Create link or create a shared album.
- Send the generated URL, or invite specific people as collaborators.
- To reset a shared-album URL, turn link sharing off and then on again. Removing a collaborator while link sharing remains enabled does not stop someone who still has the original link.
Photos is designed around albums and your photo library rather than Drive’s file-role dialog. Google Photos storage is shared with Gmail and Drive, so existing use of those services can affect available space. Account labels and controls can differ between desktop, mobile and managed work or school accounts.
Imgur: use a public image-hosting flow
Imgur provides an upload-and-share workflow for an image-hosting post. In the public-post flow described by Imgur’s help documentation, choose the post’s visibility before uploading, then copy the resulting post or image URL. Review that setting carefully: a public post is not appropriate for confidential documents, personal identification, private screenshots or any image whose URL should remain limited.
Use an image-hosting URL when you want a page that is easy to open without a cloud-drive account. Use Drive or Photos instead when named access, collaboration or library organization matters more than a public post.

Automate uploads with the Google Photos API
For a scripted workflow, Google documents a two-step process: upload the image bytes to obtain an upload token, then use that token to create a media item in the user’s library. This is an API integration rather than a one-click public-link generator, so you must still establish how the resulting media item will be shared.
Supported files and size
The current Google for Developers upload-media guide lists AVIF, BMP, GIF, HEIC, ICO, JPG, PNG, TIFF, WEBP and some RAW formats. It lists a maximum photo size of 200 MB for this API path; do not generalize that limit to every manual Google Photos upload route. Consult the Google Photos upload-media documentation for authentication scopes, request details and current restrictions.
Plan the API flow
- Authenticate the user with the scopes required by the Photos Library API.
- Send the binary file to the documented upload endpoint and capture the returned upload token.
- Submit a media-item creation request containing that token and any description.
- Use the returned media-item information in the sharing workflow your application provides. Do not assume that creating a library item automatically creates an anonymous, permanent URL.
Privacy, permissions and link lifetime
Anyone-with-the-link is not private
Anyone-with-the-link means possession of the URL is the authorization check. A recipient can forward it, post it elsewhere or save a copy. Use Restricted access with named people for sensitive images, and review both the file and its containing folder.
Managed accounts can override your choice
Organizations may disable external sharing or limit which domains can receive links. If the dialog does not offer Anyone with the link, the account administrator may have imposed that policy. Ask the administrator or use an account and service permitted for the audience.

Sharing is different from embedding
A Drive or Photos sharing URL normally opens a service page or viewer. It is not necessarily a stable, direct image URL for an HTML <img> tag. If a website requires a direct asset URL, check that service’s current embedding rules rather than modifying the sharing URL by guesswork.
Troubleshooting checklist
The recipient sees “Request access”
- Reopen the sharing dialog and confirm the intended audience is selected.
- For Restricted files, add the recipient’s exact account address.
- Test in an incognito window to avoid mistaking your owner session for public access.
- Inspect the parent folder for inherited restrictions or permissions.
The link works for you but not for others
- Your browser may be signed in to the owner account. Repeat the test while signed out.
- A work or school policy may block external viewers.
- The file may have moved, been deleted or had its access changed after you copied the URL.
You removed a Photos collaborator but access continues
That behavior is expected when album link sharing is still enabled. Turn link sharing off and back on to reset the shared-album URL, then send only the new URL.
The image is too large for API upload
For the Google Photos API, compare the file with the documented 200 MB maximum and supported-type list. Resize or convert the image only if doing so preserves the quality and metadata your application needs; manual service limits can differ.
You need to revoke a link quickly
Change Drive access to Restricted, remove named recipients as appropriate, or reset Google Photos album link sharing. Then distribute the replacement URL only to the intended audience. Revocation cannot retrieve copies already downloaded.

Can I make a Google Photos album URL invalid?
