Update your PC’s BIOS only when the manufacturer’s release notes give you a reason—such as support for a new CPU, a fix for a problem you have, or an important security or stability update. The correct firmware and installation method depend on your exact PC or motherboard model, so never use a file for a similar-looking model.
On most modern computers, the firmware commonly called the BIOS is technically UEFI. It starts and initializes hardware before Windows loads. A firmware update can help, but it can also reset settings or prevent Windows from booting if the wrong file is installed or the process is interrupted.
Do you need a BIOS update?
Check the release notes for your exact PC or motherboard before updating. An update is worth considering when it:
- Fixes a problem you are experiencing.
- Adds support for a CPU you plan to install or have just installed.
- Addresses a relevant security, stability, boot, storage, or compatibility issue.
- Is required by the manufacturer for a particular feature or Windows transition.
If your system is stable and the notes offer nothing relevant, there is usually no need to update simply because a newer version exists. BIOS updates are not normally general performance upgrades, and a particular update should not be assumed to increase game frame rates or make Windows faster. Avoid flashing while the system is unstable from overclocking or undervolting, or when power is unreliable.

1. Identify the exact PC or motherboard
For a branded laptop or desktop, use the model or service tag printed on the device, shown in Settings → System → About, or detected by the manufacturer’s support application. Use that model on the manufacturer’s official support site. Vendor tools such as Dell SupportAssist or ASUS MyASUS may offer updates on supported systems; availability varies by device.
For a custom-built PC, find the motherboard’s exact model and hardware revision. Check the board itself, its manual, or the system information utility. Names with suffixes such as “Wi-Fi,” “MAX,” “AX,” “D4,” “D5,” or “Gaming” can refer to different firmware packages. Do not choose a file based on a similar name alone.
Download firmware only from the PC or motherboard maker’s official support page, or use a model-specific utility the maker provides. Avoid third-party download sites, forum attachments, and generic driver-updater programs.

In Windows, press Windows + R, enter msinfo32, and press Enter. Find BIOS Version/Date in System Information. You can also use PowerShell:

Compare the installed version with the version and release notes on the official support page. Read any installation prerequisites carefully: some manufacturers require an intermediate firmware version, restrict downgrades, or provide separate files for different hardware revisions.
3. Prepare before flashing
- Back up important files. A firmware update is not a substitute for a data backup.
- Protect against BitLocker recovery. Locate and save your BitLocker or Device Encryption recovery key before changing firmware. A BIOS or Secure Boot change can trigger a recovery prompt. Follow your manufacturer’s instructions about suspending protection; it is not required in every configuration, but some vendors explicitly require it. Microsoft documents how firmware changes can affect BitLocker: BitLocker FAQ.
- Record current settings. Photograph or write down boot mode (UEFI or Legacy/CSM), boot order, SATA or RAID mode, XMP/EXPO memory profile, fan curves, virtualization, Secure Boot, TPM-related settings, and any overclock or undervolt you need to restore.
- Use reliable power. Connect a laptop to its AC adapter and ensure its battery is charged. For a desktop, wait for stable power; do not flash during a storm or outage risk.
- Close applications and disconnect unnecessary USB devices. Do not begin while the system is unstable.
For BitLocker, first back up the recovery key, then use the manufacturer’s recommended suspension procedure if applicable. On supported Windows editions, an administrator may check status with Get-BitLockerVolume and suspend protection for one restart with Suspend-BitLocker -MountPoint "C:" -RebootCount 1. Command availability and behavior vary by Windows edition, policy, and encryption setup; use the graphical controls or your organization’s IT instructions if unsure. Resume protection once Windows starts normally.

Windows updater or OEM utility
This is often the simplest option for a branded PC when its manufacturer offers and recommends it. Let the official support utility identify the device, review the BIOS version and notes, confirm the package matches the exact model, connect AC power, save your work, and start the update. Accept the requested restart and let the firmware screen and any automatic reboots finish.

Some manufacturers also deliver firmware through Windows Update, but this is supported only on particular devices and configurations. Dell documents SupportAssist, standalone packages, and Windows Update among its available paths; ASUS documents MyASUS and Windows BIOS Installer for supported systems. Do not assume that any Windows update or utility is suitable for every PC, and check whether a bundled package includes other components.
Firmware flash utility using a USB drive
Many custom motherboards provide a flash utility inside UEFI setup. Follow the board manual exactly; a typical process is:
- Download the BIOS file for the exact board model and revision.
- Format a USB drive as instructed—often FAT32—and extract the downloaded archive if needed.
- Rename the file only if the manufacturer specifically requires it. Copy it to the drive’s root directory if the manual says to do so.
- Restart into UEFI setup. The entry key is model-specific; common keys include Delete, F2, F10, and Esc. Windows may also offer Settings → System → Recovery → Advanced startup → Restart now → Troubleshoot → Advanced options → UEFI Firmware Settings on supported systems. - Open the vendor’s flash utility, select the USB drive and file, confirm the displayed model and version, and start the update.
Utility names differ by maker: ASUS EZ Flash, MSI M-FLASH, Gigabyte Q-Flash, and ASRock Instant Flash are examples, not interchangeable tools. MSI’s instructions, for example, use Delete to enter setup and M-FLASH to select the firmware file: MSI M-FLASH instructions. ASUS documents EZ Flash as an option when a Windows BIOS installer is unavailable.

USB BIOS Flashback
Flashback is a separate feature available only on supported motherboards. It may allow firmware recovery or updating without a working CPU, memory, or display, but the required USB port, filename, power state, and button sequence are specific to the board. Use the motherboard manual, then wait until its status light indicates completion. Do not use a generic Flashback recipe.

5. Let the update finish without interruption
The screen may go blank, fans may change speed, and the computer may restart more than once. The first startup can take longer than usual, including while memory training takes place. Settings may also return to defaults. These behaviors vary by system, so there is no universal update time.
Do not shut down, unplug the computer, press reset, or remove the USB drive while the update is in progress. A blank screen or extra reboot alone does not prove that flashing has failed. Follow the manufacturer’s duration guidance and status indicators. Do not interrupt a visibly progressing update.

After the PC restarts, check the BIOS version in firmware setup or Windows System Information. If Windows boots normally:

Restore the correct SATA or RAID setting if it changed; a mismatch can stop Windows from starting or make a RAID volume unavailable.
- Restore only settings you recognize and need, such as Secure Boot, virtualization, fan curves, and XMP/EXPO. Memory may run at its default speed until its profile is restored.
- Test at default CPU and memory settings first. If stable, reapply overclocking or other tuning one setting at a time.
- Check that BitLocker protection is active again if you suspended it. Test restart, shutdown, sleep, storage, USB, networking, and any new CPU or memory that motivated the update.
If the manufacturer recommends loading optimized or default settings, do so and then restore essential boot and storage settings carefully. Do not blindly enable every security or performance option.

Troubleshooting
The update is rejected or will not start
Stop and recheck the exact model and board revision, release notes, file name, archive extraction, USB format, required intermediate versions, and any model-specific firmware password or power requirements. A Windows updater may also be blocked by security software or organizational policy. Do not try a similar model’s file or an unofficial flashing tool; consult the exact device manual or manufacturer support.
Windows asks for a BitLocker recovery key
Do not guess repeatedly. Retrieve the saved recovery key from the approved Microsoft account, organization, or storage location. Confirm the firmware update completed, then follow the manufacturer’s guidance. If you cannot find the key, encrypted data may remain inaccessible. Once Windows starts normally, resume protection if it was suspended.
The PC has no display or Windows will not boot
First allow the manufacturer’s documented completion period, then check diagnostic LEDs or beep codes and confirm the monitor input and cable. A reset boot mode, storage setting, memory-training delay, or GPU initialization issue can resemble a failed flash. If you can enter setup, verify the boot drive, UEFI mode, and storage configuration; temporarily disable XMP/EXPO and overclocking while testing.
If the system remains unbootable, use only a recovery method documented for the exact model. Depending on the board, options may include automatic BIOS recovery, USB recovery, Flashback, dual-BIOS fallback, or service. Clear CMOS only when the manual permits it and you understand that firmware settings will be erased. Do not repeatedly power-cycle a system while an update is visibly progressing.
The update completed but the PC is unstable
Load manufacturer-recommended defaults, confirm boot and storage settings, and test at stock CPU and memory settings. Reapply custom settings one at a time. If the issue began immediately after the update, consider a downgrade only if the manufacturer supports it and explains how; some updates block rollback or contain security fixes.
When to get help
Contact the PC or motherboard maker, an authorized service provider, or your organization’s IT team if you cannot identify the exact model, lack a required recovery key, encounter a firmware password or policy restriction, or cannot recover from a failed flash. Professional help is especially sensible for a business-critical PC or a device under warranty. Most routine updates do not require buying special equipment; a basic USB drive is enough when the manual calls for one.
