To update an iPod touch, first back it up, connect it to Wi-Fi and power, then open Settings > General > Software Update and tap Download and Install if an update is offered. The newest software depends on the model: as of August 18, 2026, Apple lists iOS 15.8.8 for the 7th-generation iPod touch and iOS 12.5.8 for the 6th generation. An iPod touch cannot install newer iOS releases made for current iPhones.
Which iPod touch do you have?
Check Settings > General > About for the device’s model information and installed iOS version. If the generation is not clear, use Apple’s security-release list and Apple’s model-identification information to verify it before troubleshooting. The distinction matters: the 7th generation is eligible for iOS 15 updates, while the 6th generation is limited to the iOS 12 branch. Earlier generations have older software limits.
Apple’s latest listed versions for the two newest models, checked August 18, 2026, are:

These are the latest releases Apple listed on that date, not a promise that no further maintenance update will ever appear. See Apple’s security releases for current availability. If Software Update reports that your iPod touch is up to date, it may simply have reached the newest release offered for that generation.

Before you update
- Back up first. Use iCloud or back up to a computer. A normal iOS update is intended to preserve data and settings, but a backup protects you if something goes wrong.
- Connect to reliable Wi-Fi and power. Keep the iPod touch plugged in during the download and installation.
- Have the passcode ready. You may need to enter it or accept terms during the update.
- Check free storage. If space is tight, remove or offload large apps and downloaded media after backing up. The required space can vary.
- Do not disconnect the cable or power during a computer-based installation.
Update wirelessly
- Open Settings on the iPod touch.
- Tap General, then Software Update.
- Review the installed version and any update shown. If one is available, tap Download and Install.
- Enter the passcode and accept any terms if prompted.
- Leave the iPod touch connected to Wi-Fi and power while it downloads and restarts. When it returns to the Home Screen, check Settings > General > Software Update again to confirm the installed version.

Automatic updates
On supported software, open Settings > General > Software Update > Automatic Updates to review the available controls. Automatic installation can happen while the device is charging and connected to Wi-Fi. This setting installs only updates Apple offers for your model; it does not make an older iPod touch compatible with a newer iOS branch.
Update with a Mac
macOS Catalina or later: Finder
- Connect the iPod touch to the Mac with a data-capable cable and unlock it if needed.
- Open Finder and select the iPod touch in the sidebar. Approve a trust prompt on the device if one appears.
- Click General, then Check for Update.
- Choose Download and Update and follow the prompts.
Finder device updates require macOS Catalina or later. Apple’s computer update instructions cover the process.

- Open iTunes and connect the iPod touch.
- Click the device button, then select Summary.
- Click Check for Update, then Download and Update if offered.

Update with a Windows PC
Apple Devices app
- Connect the iPod touch to the PC with a USB or USB-C cable and adapter as appropriate.
- Open the Apple Devices app and select the iPod touch in the sidebar.
- Select General, then Update. If needed, select Check for Update first.
- Follow the onscreen prompts and keep the device connected.

iTunes
If your PC uses iTunes instead, open it, connect the iPod touch, click the device button, and choose Summary > Check for Update > Download and Update if an update is offered. Apple documents this route in its iTunes instructions.
If no update appears or installation fails
Start by checking Settings > General > About and confirming the generation and installed version. No update can mean the device is already current for its model, the expected iOS release is not compatible, or an update is temporarily unavailable. If it should be eligible or the update fails, work through these checks:

Restart the iPod touch and router if the connection is unstable. If a computer is using the iPod touch’s Personal Hotspot, switch the computer to separate Wi-Fi or Ethernet; Apple notes that the update computer should use a different network from the hotspot-providing device.
- Free storage. Check available space at Settings > General > iPod Storage. After backing up, remove or offload large apps, videos, podcasts, or other downloaded media, then try again.
- Use a computer instead. Try Finder on macOS Catalina or later, iTunes on an older Mac, or Apple Devices/iTunes on Windows. Apple recommends a computer when wireless updating does not work.
- Check power and restrictions. Use a reliable charger and cable. A supervised or restricted device may be managed by its organization or parent, and may not allow changes in the usual way.
- Retry later if the update service cannot be reached. Confirm the computer is online, update Apple Devices or iTunes, and restart the computer. If the device is locked out or already in recovery mode, a computer is required.
If the computer does not recognize the iPod touch, unlock it and approve any Trust This Computer prompt; try another USB port and a known-good data cable (some cables charge only); connect directly rather than through an unpowered hub; and restart both devices. Make sure macOS, Apple Devices, or iTunes is current. Apple’s recovery and connection guidance distinguishes the available computer workflows.

Try an ordinary computer-based Update first. Recovery mode is for a device that will not update or start normally. Connect the iPod touch to a computer, open Finder, Apple Devices, or iTunes, then use the button combination for its generation until the Connect to computer screen appears:
- 7th generation: Press and hold the top/side button and volume-down button together.
- 6th generation or earlier: Press and hold the Home button and top/side button together.
When the computer offers Update or Restore, choose Update first. It attempts to reinstall or update iOS without intentionally erasing the device.

Use it only if Update fails and you understand the data-loss risk; make sure you have a backup if possible. If a download takes more than 15 minutes and the iPod touch exits recovery mode, let the download finish, then repeat the recovery-mode steps. What updating cannot do
A software update does not bypass Activation Lock on a secondhand iPod touch; the previous owner’s Apple Account may still be required to activate it. Nor does installing the newest version available for the device guarantee that a current App Store app will work: app compatibility depends on its own minimum iOS requirement. Older generations may remain unable to run newer apps even after updating.
